SafetyTurtle Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 I'm not sure if it's the right forum or not but it does have something to do with inputs and outputs. I was thinking earlier today of when immersion becomes "to much", where is the limit of when it starts to get silly. I've just gotten into flight sims in a serious way and begun designing my first pit and I slowly start expanding what I want to do with it. And then I got to thinking it would be kinda cool with a homemade g-seat...and even cooler with a helmet with build in headphones, trackIR and mic...and a flightsuit. That got me to thinking, like I already mentioned: where is the line of when it becomes to much? The way I see it is this: I'll never be a fighter pilot...chances are I'll never be any form of pilot so sims is the only chance for me to feel like a fighter pilot. It's the same reason I'm very keen on using the correct lingo and procedures, and I'm thinking, why not expand the sensation to not only include what you see and do but also what you feel...get it as immersive as possible. So, what is your take on this?
BaD CrC Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 For flight simming, the only limiting factor for immersion is the money you have left in your wallet. Any other consideration is pointless. https://www.blacksharkden.com http://discord.gg/blacksharkden
PFunk1606688187 Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 I guess convenience would be a factor if money isn't. Looking at some people's sim pits I shudder at the thought of having to move with such an arrangement. I have a hard enough time not being OCD about where my chair is when I fly. Warning: Nothing I say is automatically correct, even if I think it is.

badger66 Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 I was thinking earlier today of when immersion becomes "to much", where is the limit of when it starts to get silly. I think it will get stupid in the future , if you loose sense of what is going on around you , in real life . You can wear what you like ..... I wouldn't go down the flight suit route and I reckon wearing a helmet for awhile might hurt your neck muscles . Ive flown with my boxers on ..... when its hot .

Thick8 Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 It's funny that my wife was just sitting with me as I was putting terminal ends on my 150+ switches and such. She said that when I started looking at the cockpit displayed here she thought "those guys are nuts". Now she's sure of it. metalnwood Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 When my wife wakes me up in the pit because I blacked out evading a missile, thats when I will say a little too much immersion for s simulator.
leafer Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 The way I see it is this: I'll never be a fighter pilot...chances are I'll never be any form of pilot so sims is the only chance for me to feel like a fighter pilot. Years ago I wanted to be one so bad I distorted reality to feel like there is a chance I could, but deep down knowing full well I'll never be any where near any cockpit. lol I even bought a pair of aviation headsets and had nothing to plug them into. I was a sad mess. :P Yeah, I might know how you feel. Even then I cringed when I read people wear flight suit and helmet while simming. I have a hard enough time not being OCD about where my chair is when I fly. :D Here here.. ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P

Sabre-TLA Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 Immersion is a state of mind so the more you can fool the mind the more you will feel immersed. Don't knock flight simming in full gear until you try it. To some it may seem crazy but when you get suited up for a mission it does make you feel more 'immersed'. It's not cosplay exactly but ask the cosplayers how they feel about their outfits when they perform. MapleFlagMissions - Read Our Blog for Updates
rajdary Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 I started off playing A10C with my 5 year old rig (which is ok) in October 2013. I first wanted to try it and see if it was good enough that i would get hooked. BANG! All of a suddden I added TM Warthog (Bday) loved it and added Track Ir and 780Ti (Xmas) also loved it and used some savings to add 2 monitors for triple monitor setup Loved it even more and i am now looking at Obutto seat, Buttkicker, better sound system, future modules etc........ Some day Occulus Rift........ But no. Ive stopped. Now i only want to get more modules. DCSW is drainiing my wallet and getting alot of my time, i have to take an "inmersion brake", although so far every step has made the experience much better, i dont know from now onwards. Maybe when the Eurofighter Typhoon Module comes out i will continue with inmersion.:D Phanteks Enthoo Evolv Tempered Glass, Asus ROG Maximus IX Hero, Intel i7 7700K @ 4.8, Corsair HX 1000i, Nzxt Kraken 62, 32gb DDR4 3000Mhz Corsair Dominator Platinum, Nvme SSD Samsung 960 Evo 1Tb, Asus Strix OC 1080ti, Philips 43" 4K Monitor + 2 x Dell 24" U2414H, Warthog HOTAS, Track IR 5, Obutto R3volution, Buttkicker Gamer 2, MFG Crosswind pedals, Occulus Rift CV1, Windows 10 Pro.

So, what is your take on this? There can't be "too much immersion" imo. The only limiting factor are the costs ... :o) Like those simpits, partly made from genuine a/c parts, partly with state-of-the-art consumer electronics stuff, that can cost easily 5-digit USD or EUR figures ... One can question where to draw the line, where the next 1000 bucks will really add so much more immersion as the first 1000 bucks ...? (on the other hand, simpit-building often is a hobby of it's own, though)
SafetyTurtle Posted April 26, 2014 Author Posted April 26, 2014 (on the other hand, simpit-building often is a hobby of it's own, though) Guess that's the main thing there...even though you may one day lose interest in flying for a bit, you still build something awesome with your own hands. Guess its sorta the same as buying an old broken car and spending ten times as much money on fixing it up as you spend on the car itself ^^
Bergison Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 (edited) One big advantage of flying simulators compared to the real thing is that it is all about having a good time, which real world flying is definitely not all the time (believe me). So in my opinion, everything you invest in your sim-experience, may it be money or time or both, is absolutely worth it - as long as it makes you feel better, doesn't hurt anybody and you enjoy doing it! The limit of reasonable immersion in my opinion is, when you spend more time building/expanding your simpit than actually flying it. On the other hand, if that is what makes you happy - then go for it! (speaking as someone who spends a lot of time in an immersive simpit: http://meintourenbuch.net/simpit/current) However, with all the simulation technology now available, one thing that should not be forgotten is this: immersion primarily takes place in your head! I've had some flights in real aircraft, which felt absolutely unreal after landing! And I remember flying LHX attack chopper as a boy in the 90s with a helmet on and feeling totaly real! My advice: stick to what makes you enjoy it the most!!! Edited April 26, 2014 by Bergison my simpit website: bergisons.simpit.info
