Nice kill

Op fireshield is the most challenging for me in term of good mig 21 usage. Small hills and shallow valley makes it harder.

Very nice fight Hadwell

Got my weirdest kill the other day I guess : see a contrail so I start a pursuit it's enemy, I'm almost in range when...engine goes out...I shoot a R3r out of despair and try to keep the lock with my airspeed dropping. The missile hits I start to giggle and try to restart the engine, it works lol...best part didn't think to record. Lol

Bidartarra, get the replay file and record it! ;)

My 21 goals are on hold as I am enjoying the SU-25A so much currently.

Haha I should!

Gonna put together a video this week hopefully, recorded enough stuff to do so.

I'm having so much fun with the 21

My first MiG-21 kill on the 104th. Saw an F-15 contact on radar, didn't see it visually, so I centered it on radar got the ready to fire tone, and naturally..

Nice job!

My new video:

A kill on the 104th, played cat and mouse with 2 F-15 getting locked several times but got lucky and shot down a imprudent contrailer (with my engine flaming out in the middle of the fight!)

Music comes from what i was listenning to while flying (sorry about that), tried a fliter while editing hence the different colours.

Any (constructive) feedback appreciated!

They is no need to hide in the mountains. With my wingmans, we just go head-on against F-15 now, even above the sea. The Aim-120 just seems incapable of keeping a lock on a manoeuvering Mig. :smartass: And they fired a lot. We spend a week on the 159th squadron (nice team by the way) - by the end of the week the F15 were flying at 100ft to avoid us and the amraam they shoot at us could have been enough to buy the whole country.

I've only gotten a handful of kills online. Only Eagles I believe.

However I watched a track recently where an Eagle tried to get me with 120Cs and I manuvered away pretty easy. To be honest I did the perfekt turn at the right time and so on, mostly luck though. Still...

Edit: It would be fun to watch that track Darkwolf. Would you mind?

Before I go on with my post, here a few facts:

I'm a passionate WWII sim pilot and racked up a lot of flight hours with cliffs of Dover. I stayed away from DCS mainly because missiles, radars, RWR and all that fancy electronic stuff IMHO kill the 'sport' of aerial combat(the sport of competing and dogfighting online if you will, albeit it's realism and portrayal of mordern air combat).

Still, a couple of months ago I indulged on an impulse to buy the MiG21 module, flew free flight and training for a bit but let it sit idly on my hard drive ever since. Just a week ago I decided to fire it up again and get to know this russian dart and the learning process alone has been a blast.

Especially it's A2A aspect with the rather simplistic radar and it's steampunk style display has got me hooked. Anyways...

After analyzing every post and video in this thread I came to the following conclusions:

Stick to the deck,

hug the terrain,

know your RWR and interpret it correctly,

know the land and it's mountains and valleys,

chicken out when in doubt on full afterburner with emergency AB,

be patient,

get 'spamraamed' a lot(love that term, it complies with my theory of the above mentioned 'sport') and don't quit,

flank the main area of engagement,

occasionally make use of the manual ARU in tight turns,

mind the limited use of radar,

mind the fuel gauge,

mind the the G-Meter,

did I miss anything?

Got my first online kill!

As I was quietly drumming along from Sochi to Novorossiysk at low level I got a brief spike off my half right. I raised a little above the ridge lines and got a bit more of a spike to make sure it was airborne. Turning right up a valley I quickly went weapons hot. My rwr went quiet again even though I believed I had a clear LOS straight ahead. Thinking he had turned around I quickly nosed up and went full emergency AB. Radar on with 1.5 degree up tilt and I got him straight away, slightly off to the right at under 15kms. He briefly flashed his ECM, but then went cold again. A few seconds pause as I corrected and I launched one R3R and readied up another. He just started to pull G as the missile slammed into him. I was then accused of hacking because he never saw me. Apparently I used invisibility hacks against his Su-27. A bit of a giggle as I quickly egressed back to Sochi using the terrain to mask my escape. I knew I was right on the limits of my fuel and managed to touch down with about 400L left under ILS as the fog was pretty decent.

Just because we're not on your Radar or RWR doesn't mean we're not there. He was very salty that a Mig-21 had splashed him.

I don't test for bugs, but when I do I do it in production.

Yeah some people in MP assume their mighty war horses can't be shot down by those cheap mig 21.

The next milestone in your Mig 21 career, make someone rage quit, always happened with F15 pilots for me lol

2nd kill

My second kill. There was a fair bit of maneuvering leading up to the video to prevent being detected. The target had killed one of my courageous comrades and I ingressed into the area where I thought the engagement had taken place. He was hanging around a bit, but then went RTB which is when I elected to go high.

I had to remove the game sound as there was a lot of people talking.

Never mind, the Soviet anthem fits in perfectly.

BTW, nice flying folks!

Kudos to you guys. I'm yet to even lock an enemy on 104th! I just fly, get locked, then either evade or die. And the SAMs around the enemy bases are BRUTAL, you get locked and they fire at like 50km away!

104th seems to be set up to make attacks on hostile A2G planes very difficult. Their AO is always on the opposite side of the map from your fighter base and protected by SAMs.

Typically you'll be facing 2 main SAM threats- The main F-15/SU-27 base will have some kind of ultra long range air defense system like the Patriot or SA-10. These SAMs can lock on and fire at ranges up to 100km against a high altitude target. In addition, their missiles can pull 30g and have a top speed of mach 5, so just stay away from them.

The other bases will be protected by medium range SAMs, typically SA-11 or MIM-23 HAWK. The Sa-11 will lock you at a little under 30km, the HAWK maybe a little further. Sa-11 batteries are easy to deal with because they like to launch large salvos of missiles (often 3-4 at once) at maximum range, so in general if you get locked just turn and fly away from the SAM site and any missiles that have been launched will fail to connect. Its a little risky but you can actually trick the SA-11s into wasting all of their missiles- just fly towards the site, keeping an eye on its location. When you see a smoke trail just turn and run, wait until the site breaks lock and the come back. Rinse and repeat until the site stops launching missiles at you (but still be careful! sometimes the SA-11s have SA-15s as backup).

Its quite possible to make successful incursions on the enemy attack planes, particularly on the operation leopard mission when playing as the red side.

On Op Leopard I like to load 2x R3Rs, 2x R-60Ms, a full gun load and the 800L droptank. Fly out to the north-west from Tbilisi on heading 300 and climb to 6000m or so to save fuel. Most of the Blue F-15s like to stay near the Bullseye or to the east of it, roughly on the line that leads from their base to Tiblisi, so this course should keep you out of most of the heat (F-15 radar can see you 100km away, so no guarantees). If you get locked, dive into the mountains and hide. Once you are due south of Nalchik turn to heading 330.

The Blue A-10s operate in the area around Kislovodsk, and you should aim to get around 30 km west of Nalchik and its SA-11 battery before turning to fly directly to that location. Once you clear the mountains start to descend to around 1000m. The A-10s will generally fly at 3000-4000m as this keeps them out of reach of MANPADS, so your radar should be able to see them by looking up. Min-Vody has another SA-11 battery that will try to kill you. Thankfully its launchers seem to be poorly laid out, and I've often seen missiles taking off from Vody and exploding just after clearing the hill to the south of the base. I suspect that the search radar is able to detect aircraft operating in that area (I can hear it on the RWR), but the launchers and tracking radars don't have line of sight and thus the missiles get fired without a lock and self destruct. If Kislovodsk has been cleared the blue attackers will move to an area that is roughly due east of Min-Vody. Be careful of the SA-11 battery, as it can lock you when you are in this area. Unfortunately because of the MiG-21's short range you will have only 5-10 minutes in the AO before you need to RTB, or even less if you use the afterburner for an intercept. Given the predictable behaviour of A-10s and Su-25Ts that 5-10 minutes is usually long enough to get a couple of kills. If you find yourself with too little fuel to make it back to Tiblisi you can divert to one of the unoccupied airfields on the coast and then spawn a new plane, as civilian airfields will not refuel you.

Went to Kislovodsk to hunt A-10 yesterday, only got one, it was at night and they are tough to spot. But after a few minutes the A-10 pilots started to freak out and shoot at each other lol, they lost one more A10 due to friendly fire haha.

I had something like this happen. Was hunting A-10s in my MiG, got behind one to fire, shot a R-60 and missed and was breaking left to reposition. His wingman had started to move in behind me and fired both of his AIM-9s at me, one missed, the other went after and hit his wingman, He was pretty banged up and was at least down an engine! I later downed the second A-10 with guns. Felt bad for his wingmen but was hilarious to watch. The other A-10 that was hit by friendly fire was limping home, and I decided to leave him alone, he had been through enough and I was low on fuel. Lol
