I was flying last night and couldn't tell what the symbols were on my radar screen.

Can someone enlighten me?

Most said SD, with a rounded top ans another had a symbol that was pointed. another had a 29 in the symbol, Mig? no clue.

Also how to you tell which is enemy and which are allied or just what they are?

Confused!

Been searching and have had no luck.

It's in the manual ... or should be in the manual.

Try page 410 in the manual.

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

What I would like to find is a consolidated collection of small photos that show what these are. I always have difficulty trying to figure out what I am looking at in my TGP,, I have come across a few pdfs here and there, but they have been either minimal or overly described to the point it would not be practical to print up as a quick reference guide,,,

I think joey45 talks about the flight manual instead of the quick start manual.

Lino made a nice guide for that:

Unfortunately it's in german. It consists of a picture which you can put in the kneeboard and a PDF with the various symbols.

And btw, it's not a radar screen you're looking at. The A-10 doesn't even have a radar. That thing you're talking about is the RWR, the Radar Warning Reciever which shows all the foreign radar signals around you that are pointing at you.

About IFF (Identify Friend or Foe): You can't IFF by looking at the RWR, at least there is no technical way to do so. The only way to IFF when flying in a plane that has no radar like the A-10 is the use of common sense and communication with your allies and of course visually recognize a plane by using the Mk.I eyeball. ;)

Radar equipped planes can IFF by using their radar and transmitting an IFF signal to the target which it has to respond to correctly.

Sorry folks.

I honestly thought I was looking at the manuel. It was the quckstart one 256 pages.

The real flight manual has 671 pages.

I'll be looking through it and hopefully find my answer.

Thanks for the help pilots <S>salute

Here you go, from the manual:

Ground Radars:

A – “Gepard” and ZSU-23-4 Self Propelled Anti-Aircraft guns

M – Missile detected by Missile Warning System (MWS)

L – Laser illumination

S6 – 2S6 “Tunguska”

3 – SA-3

6 – SA-6

8 – SA-8

10 – SA-10 "Flap Lid" tracking radar

CS – SA-10 "Clam Shell" low altitude search radar

BB – SA-10 "Big Bird" search radar

11 – SA-11/17 tracking radar

SD – SA-11/17 "Snow Drift" search radar

13 – SA-13

DE – "Dog Ear" search radar

15 – SA-15

RO – Roland

PA – Patriot

HA – I-HAWK

S – Early Warning or Ground Control Intercept Radar

Airborne Radars:

E3 – E-3A AWACS

E2 – E-2C AWACS

50 – A-50U AWACS

23 – MiG-23ML

25 – MiG-25PD

29 – MiG-29, Su-27, and Su-33

31 – MiG-31

30 – Su-30

34 – Su-34

M2 – Mirage 200-5

F4 – F-4

F5 – F-5

14 – F-14

15 – F-15

16 – F-16

18 – F/A-18

A symbol can have three states on the display:

- If a symbol is displayed with no circle around it, it indicates that the radar is in acquisition/search mode. When a new emitter is detected, a new threat tone will be heard.

- If a symbol has a steady circle around it, it indicates that the radar is tracking/locked on to your aircraft. When being tracked by an engagement radar, you will be provided a radar lock tone.

- If a symbol has a flashing circle around it, it indicates that the radar is supporting a missile that has been launched at you. When being launched on by a radar-guided missile, you will hear a missile launch tone. When a missile launch has occurred, the Missile Launch (ML) light on the CMSC will turn on. A detected missile will be displayed as an M symbol with a flashing circle around it.

When the Missile Warning System (MWS) is active and a missile launch has been detected by the sensors on the wings and tail, an “M” is displayed along the azimuth the launch was detected. The symbol will continue to appear 10 seconds after the launch is no longer detected (missile motor has stopped burning). Note that the MWS cannot distinguish between enemy and friendly missiles or air launched missiles from ground launched missiles. As such, you may receive launch indications from both friendly and ground units.

When a laser illumination on the aircraft is detected, an “L” is displayed along the azimuth the laser was detected. The symbol will continue to appear as long as the laser illumination is detected.
