Hi guys, I'm to update my old rig for the incoming dcs world 2.0.

After reading many posts and looked at configs of many of you, this is what I'm getting to:

i5 4670k (performance of 4770k does not worth extra money)

2x4Gb (8Gb should be more than enough, isn't it?), better ddr3 1600 pc3-12800 cl9 or 2133 pc3-17000 cl11? Better g-skill ripjawsx or corsair vengeance?

Hdd SSD Samsung 840 Evo 250Gb

M/B: better Asrock Z97 extreme 4 or MSI Z97 gaming 5? Or any other cheaper solution with same performance in dcs?

Video card: i will keep my GTX 460 untill world 2.0 is out, then i will decide if take 1 GTX 970 or 1 GTX 760 or 2 GTX 760 in SLI, depending on how such cards will perform the new engine.

Which CPU cooler do you suggest? Maybe light OC..

What do you think?

Please advice!!

Alessandro

What do you mean by a light overclock? Maybe a vanilla I5 4690 would be a cheaper option. You can also use the stock fan in that case, no fancy cooling system required if you skip the overclocking. My basic I5 4690 has been very satisfactory in DCS and everything else.

Your components are the same as a rig I just built for my son.

The exception is I replaced his GTX295 with a GTX970. Last night I played some CA with him, His framerates where between 80 and 100 FPS spamming F11. When I do that with my rig. See Sig. I get between 20 and 30 FPS.

The biggest factor I see is the GPU and the 4GB of VRAM. So if I was you I would seriously think about including the 970 immediately and then you eliminate weakness in your rig:thumbup:

Oh and his i5 is running at 3.4Ghz with stock cooler

You are right! actually price of boxed 4690k is equal or even lower than 4670k (don't know why...).

So i'm getting that model and (by now) save money of cooler :smilewink:

What about RAM modules and type?

Regarding GPU: with these 970 available on market you should not look back to any SLI option. Your options starts only from 1x970 to higher...

Later edit: forgot to mention that a 770GTX needs around 240Watts while 970GTX somewhere around 140W. Along with general performances, the power consumption should be next criteria (less heat dissipated, smaller and of course cheaper power supply, etc)

My advice dontbuy nvidia right now until they figure out if the 900 series is defective or not. Lots of problems with them and no answer from nvidia. Their drivers are horrible right now and it's a bad time to be running the 900 series. They have major gpu usage problems resulting in horrible fps and lots of stuttering. I'm regretting buying the 980's , they need to release good drivers but it's been very quiet from nvidia......

no one says you have to run the latest graphics drivers.

The rig in my sig is getting replaced this week. At least most of it is anyway.

Case: Corsair Graphite 230

CPU: FX 8350

Cooler: H75 Liquid cooler

RAM: 8 Gig 1833 DDR3

That will mean a new motherboard as well.

Video card and hard drives / SSD are just getting moved over. I imagine the existing mainboard's bottlenecks have been holding back the GT650 anyway, so I should see a performance improvement.

so do tell what drivers are you runing on the 980s?

Heres a few of the problems, id read up before deciding what brand to buy.

I have observed horrible gpu usage with sli 980 trying to run dcs and other games in dsr 4k. I fly dcs world in 3d and have noticed problems with all newer drivers, currently running 344.75. Newer drivers even jacked up the sli 770 i was running before the 980. So if you guys have a good recomendation on drivers that work well please share. Not everybody has the problems above but it is a legit problem for many others.

Well after some reading and investigating seems 344.11 might be best right now for most problems

Yep, haven't had any issues with mine, but have followed the thread on EVGA and it seems to be a legit problem for some.

I'd suggest to just wait until EDGE has been out for some time. I'm also looking to replace my whole system around summer, hopefully by that time we'll have a few months experience with it.

Thank you guys for the advices!

I will wait for EDGE/world 2.0 is out to check performance and then buy the new video card. Meanwhile i bought the asrock Z97 estreme 4 and an i5 4690k + the new SSD 250Gb 850 Evo that I guess should be handling well the new 2.0 sw.
