After dcs world 2 release, leap motion and or real space 3d support? Hoping.. :)

Recommended Posts

I am excited for both dcs world 2 and the oculus rift.

Leap motion just recently provided official leap motion support to the unreal 4 game engine http://blog.leapmotion.com/introducing-leap-motion-plugin-ue4/

I am wondering if dcs will have leap motion support in the future along with spatial audio

http://realspace3daudio.com/

Together for a super immersive vr experience :)

Yes I have. It was terrible.

I did try a newer updated firmware/software at a oculus meet up presented by folks from leap motion,

And it was better, just laggy..

But I think it has potential in the future

It does have potential but it is a long way from being useful for clicking switches, I think.

The Wii glove thing would prolly work best or a trackball next to the stick.

Got mini trackball mod on my Warthog throttle, should do just fine with OR as my hands will remain on HOTAS. Yet OR has not convinced me, I'd rather like to see device that projects reflected light.

I have had success and failure using the leap motion, the success being it works rather well in the dark, however that becomes short lived when you have to get up in a hurry because your wife is stood on the door step in the rain, banging on the door.

Ah yes i remember it well, why did i not hear the door bell must have been the blazing gun run that had my attention. Then i catch a glimpse of my phone screen lighting up in the dark, with those letters WIFE in bold------oh crap-----up i jump----forgetting the phone is plugged into tower and on the floor i trip-----headphones still plugged in, fall to the floor and catch desk on way down knocking cup of tea flying missing me by inches and the pc, now laying on the floor tangled in wire and in pain.

And yes the wife was still banging on the door, got myself loose and ran to the door darling sorry i was in the bathroom and yes i have knocked my tea over so looks like you get that new carpet after all, phew got off with that one.

So be mind full when becoming to immersed cover for all eventualities or it could cause injury and or financial expense lol.

I don't think this gadget will benefit DCS. It's more for a desktop 2D interface.

I'm working on a glove with a small vibe motor in the tip of the index finger that will let you know when you have reached a switch, button or rotary

My rig specs:

Intel Core i7 4770 @3.4Ghz // Corsair 16GB DDR3 // MoBo Asus Z87K // HDD 1TB 7200RPM // eVGA Nvidia GTX 760GT 2GB DDR5 // LG 3D 47" 1920x1080 // Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS // Saitek Combat Pro Pedals // Thrustmaster MFD Cougar pack // PS3 Eye + FTNOIR

OP wants Control VR to be implemented.

Shame that it is $300 - $600 or I might try getting it to mess around but at that price and the fact that DCS probs will not be implementing it makes it a no go for me.

Grifta is only $45 and if they hit the antler target (which looks like a big rip-off of TrackIR 5) it might be able to do similar to control vr (but without the cool gloves:cry:)

HoloLens from Microsoft looks promising as well. Interesting times, for sure!

  • 1 year later...

I finally got a leap motion device working well in the rift. The new drivers and good calibration mad a huge difference. From the tests I performed using UE4, I believe the leep is good enough now for clicking switches in the VR cockpit. Way better than looking for my mouse with the Rift on.

Leap Motion support is a no-brainer, as you only need to interact with the buttons/dials you can see.

In general buttons, switches and dials could be highlighted (e.g. like in the tutorials), when a certain "hand position" is recognized inside the highlight zone to the control. For buttons and switches, the position would be a pointing index finger, for a dial it would be thumb and index finger toughing each other.

Before a control can be activated, you would need to transition into its activation zone(preventing accidentally activating controls just by moving across a panel). Buttons would be activated just by entering the activation zone, switches need a flip by the finger, and dials need a twist/hand rotation.

Depends

What's the Cost to Develop And Integrate vs How many users actually use it.

From My experience w/ Leap Motion it has a LONG way to go to be viable,

Between the Tracking Issues and CPU Usage of the drivers.

Windows 10 Pro, Ryzen 2700X @ 4.6Ghz, 32GB DDR4-3200 GSkill (F4-3200C16D-16GTZR x2),

I thought (hoped) that the issues were solved with the Orion release.
