German news publisher heise also released an article yesterday:

"Wir sind angespannt": Sonnenfinsternis birgt Blackout-Gefahr.

There are some interesting points, for instance the next eclipse with a comparable degree of darkening won't take place before 2048, so as far as Europe is concerned the intensity of the upcoming eclipse seems to be a rather rare phenomenon.

After following this thread, I guess I'll revise my initial statement from "that sounds alarmist" to "that's good to know, and thanks for bringing this to our attention".

It also states that (based on experience from the total ecplipse in 1999) human demand variations during the eclipse are expected to surpass the photovoltaic effects (people stopping work to look at the eclipse).

wow, just shows how incredibly power hungry we are......

Sorry in advance for OT.

PPS: My ISP is due to upgrade my Internet to FTTH on the 18th. My ISP is Deutsche Telekom. That is a catastrophe waiting to happen.

(I'll let you know by mid-summer how it went... :D)

I don't know how to say this. Something extremely unexpected happened. Two Telekom technicians arrived on schedule, laid a fibre wire from the apartment to the Telekom-box in the basement, connected it, and everything works.

I just uploaded some random files: 1 GB in 4:10 minutes. Even the old ISDN phones work in the new VOIP setup.

I may have to revise part of my world view now. :D

Okay, now back to the blackout in Europe catastrophe waiting to happen. :smartass:

Considering this...

Looking at the forecast it doesn't look like they will get to test their mitigation systems under worst case scenario

A bright sunny day here btw. 20 minutes left until the maximum at my location, and it is still much brighter than if there is a small cloud in the way. People around me are surprised.

Strange, it seems they aren't listening because I was constantly telling them about the eclipse for days. ;) :D

People are always surprised. Like, one day before xmas ... omg! that time of the year again!? Where do I get all the gifts now!?

But I am surprised too. Foggy here and all I see is ... nothing. Just another grey day when it does not really get bright outside. I expected it to be more noticable by now already ...?

10 minutes until maximum. Now slowly there is a noticable difference, like on a sunny day when a small cloud blocks parts of the sun light.

There is a bit of wind now, because the difference in sun light causes a slight difference in temperature, which in turn causes a slight difference in pressure. Air rushes in, which is wind. Not really windy of course, but noticable.

Even in the worst case scenario a blackout was very unlikely to begin with. So yeah, no reason to be worried at all.

btw: Next armageddon scheduled is in September, after the lunar eclipse. A Second Coming (again), if I remember correctly.

We had news here in Australia that the USA electrical grid was going to be shut down last November to test if the backup systems in place would kick in.

That turned out to be a well reported hoax.

So, is Deutschland in darkness??

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.
