BRAVO_16 Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 I see the Lynx has some sort of harpoon that shoots into the deck on touch down. How does that work? Is the landing surface some sort of special material? Maintain thy airspeed lest the ground rise up and smite thee!
Odin_74 Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 There is a grid in the deck http://www.thinkdefence.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/6147-740x478.jpg

Yurgon Posted March 28, 2015 Posted March 28, 2015 I guess after that, there's pretty much no landing spot on the planet that would make the pilot break into a sweat... awesome skill! (Pretty sure it's a re-post, but always great to watch )
Belgeode Posted March 28, 2015 Posted March 28, 2015 Wow. Just... WOW! And I thought landing a virtual Mi-8 on a stopped Frigate was rough. I have ZERO room to complain any more!! LOL! Nice landing there. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] YouTube ~ Twitch

Looney Posted March 28, 2015 Posted March 28, 2015 The Lynx main rotor gear box has a nice trick up its sleeve. While all helicopters can produce positive lift by manipulating the angle of attack, most marine helicopters can also produce negative lift. Meaning, upon touchdown, the angle of attack is switched so that the rotor blades don't suck air from top to bottom but actually drag air in from the bottom and push it to the top. It presses itself against the ships deck that way, also, the harpoon grips the grid which help a lot as well :)..
