i was an LSE for a while in the US NAVY and I use to strap myself to the deck with a tiedown chain when I brought H53's down in these type conditions.

I see the Lynx has some sort of harpoon that shoots into the deck on touch down.

How does that work?

Is the landing surface some sort of special material?

Maintain thy airspeed lest the ground rise up and smite thee!

I guess after that, there's pretty much no landing spot on the planet that would make the pilot break into a sweat... awesome skill!

The Lynx main rotor gear box has a nice trick up its sleeve. While all helicopters can produce positive lift by manipulating the angle of attack, most marine helicopters can also produce negative lift. Meaning, upon touchdown, the angle of attack is switched so that the rotor blades don't suck air from top to bottom but actually drag air in from the bottom and push it to the top. It presses itself against the ships deck that way, also, the harpoon grips the grid which help a lot as well :)..
