Hi

Any idea why I can't set a SPI using the HUD? I am moving the TDC around the terrain and just get an x in the TDC wherever it's placed. TMS Up Long isn't setting a SPI for me?

Any advice appreciated.

TMS up short (stabilize) before, then TMS up long.

If you get an x it means the point is too far away, I think. Do you have the x when the TDC is close?

Ya, something like that. If you move the TDC closer (ie. lower in the HUD) you should be able to create a SPI.

I think that using TGP is easier and more precise to create SPI.

Why do you want to use HUD?

using the tgp to create a SPI if you acquire something visually is like tryin to find a needle in haystack. Thus if u see something of interest u can point your aircraft in the general vecinity of said point of interest and set it with the hud.

If we were to have the HMCS it would be just a matter of pointing your HEAD in that point and setting up the SPI, but that's far out of reach here :(

And of course the times when you aren't carrying a TGP (rare, I know) or it isn't functioning.

+1 to this. If I can get the TGP slewed to the general area that a target is in I can generally find it but I have to be able to get it close using the TAD or HUD first.

Hi Guys

Seemed to sort it self out last night.

Using the HUD as SPI gives you a much bigger field of view to get in the ballpark. TGP is for fine tuning or hunting!!

I'm primary using TGP.

Not sure if this is the best way but here is my procedure: I'm looking through the HUD. There is TGP mark. First I center marker (C key). Looking through the HUD flying the plane to get the mark in proximity of the target and then start slewing. Slewing ground stabilizes TGP marker. Looking through the HUD, I slew TGP mark as close as possible to the target. After that I'm using TGP monitor.

Therefore I don't see the point of using HUD as SPI.

I guess that works toó :). But keeping it as a backup tool is always good.

There's no right or wrong in this case, you can do whatever is more comfortable.

I try to stay heads up as much as possible and in a dangerous situation i wouldn't use the tgp too much, it drains situational awareness.

All right, I believe there are situations when HUD as SOI is best option. I'll give it a try.

Maybe for deploying CBU's...

Uhummmmmmmmmmmm

Ok then if I set SPI with the HUD... If I drop a JDAM will it guide to that point?

I haven't actually try that but why not? SPI is SPI no mater how is defined.
