kingneptune117 Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 All, A pretty simple question, but it is important to me. If I get a TM warthog HOTAS, can I simply plug it into my USB ports and go play, or do I need to download drivers (or get them from a cd if it comes with one) and install them? If I do need to install drivers, do I need to make sure not to plug the thing in before starting the drivers setup? I am paranoid after my Saitek x52 drivers nearly bricked my computer. As far as i know, its plug and play. The software related to it is mostly a script editor to make full use of flip switches etc that is not possible via the in-game controls. If that does not bother you however, it should work just fine without downloading any software. Edit: not 100 % im right, been a while since i got mine.,
NeilWillis Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 Yep, it is a plug and play install. You won't need to install Target, as you can set up curves, and map buttons in the DCS World. For the A-10C, it will work right out of the box. How you map the buttons for other aircraft will of course depend on your own preference, but you'll find a lot of profiles in the user files section of the DCS World website too. All I have changed regarding the Warthog is to set up the afterburner notch. That's just a matter of turning one component around after undoing a couple of Allen key bolts, and instructions on how to do it are packaged with the controller. A lot of guys here will tell you that the Warthog is a must have item.
iLOVEwindmills Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 You do need to use the software to get all the functionality out of the throttle switches right? At least, when not using it with the A10C. I understood they can't be assigned normally to the other planes within DCS.
Rongor Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 I understood they can't be assigned normally to the other planes within DCS. Incorrect. They can be and you should assign them to your full desire with all modules you use.
fixen Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 Incorrect. They can be and you should assign them to your full desire with all modules you use. You are not completely right. In the a-10c everything works as intended. But, when you want to set the flaps of the su-25 to the flap selector switch you wont be able to set three states. Only the up and down position work without target software. The middle position is the off position of the switch and DCS will require a driver to tell it is a programmable switch position aswell.

I have hawk and C101 flaps working perfectly with out programme. Maybe it was coded in ? Anyway I have 3 flaps positions working great without doing anything but assign it in controls i5 8600k@5.2Ghz, Asus Prime A Z370, 32Gb DDR4 3000, GTX1080 SC, Oculus Rift CV1, Modded TM Warthog Modded X52 Collective, Jetseat, W10 Pro 64 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Adding JTAC Guide //My Vid's//229th AHB
nervousenergy Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 Polaris has done great work here, and I also think it's too much to expect DCS to provide baseline controller layouts, but I wish they'd give us the ability to assign an action to a switch OFF state in the sim without resorting to custom Lua code. This would truly make TARGET unnecessary to get most everything out of the 'hog. Art-J Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 It's not different from Saitek, or any other controller producers out there. To sum it up: a) drivers - required, after all, Windows has to recognize it somehow; b) additional software - not required (basic controls can be assigned from game menu) unless You want some extra functionality and/or just like fiddling with profiler programs. i7 9700K @ stock speed, single GTX1070, 32 gigs of RAM, TH Warthog, MFG Crosswind, Win10.
kingneptune117 Posted July 3, 2015 Author Posted July 3, 2015 Does everyone here keep their firmware updated? Is it necessary for me to update it? fixen Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 I don't think there has been a new firmware for a long time. Have not checked mine in a long time, maybe I should check it.
kingneptune117 Posted July 3, 2015 Author Posted July 3, 2015 I had a few more questions... 1. Is there a visual image of what buttons do what in the DCS A-10C when using the TM Warthog. I just want a key layout that I can print off. 2. Will I be able to use the target software without going and updating firmware/drivers? In other words, will I be able to use TARGET software right out of the box? Art-J Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 Ad.2) Yes. I bought mine a year ago, never updated any firmware and the whole setup still works OK. I think firmware fiddling was required in the early months of Warthog's career on the market, when first production batches were notorious for electronics failures partially caused by firmware. Nowadays, I don't think it's a problem anymore. I downloaded and installed TARGET back then to see what all the fuss was about (it was loading properly "out of the box" indeed), but after configuring controls directly in the game, I never bothered to fire it up it again. ad.1) No idea (I don't own this module), but I'd be surprised if there wasn't any. i7 9700K @ stock speed, single GTX1070, 32 gigs of RAM, TH Warthog, MFG Crosswind, Win10.

Thank you for the detailed reply! My unit I coming in Sunday and I am beyond excited. I used to fly DCS I dropped off for a while. Now I am getting back into it and this new HOTAS will be great. Art-J Posted July 4, 2015 Posted July 4, 2015 Mind You, If You're coming from X52, the stiffness of centering spring in THW is going to be a bit of a nasty surprise, requiring lots of time to get used to (some folks never get used to it and go for stick extensions - fortunately, the unit was designed with easy extending in mind). But it still has more pros than cons. I think You will be pleased with this investment. i7 9700K @ stock speed, single GTX1070, 32 gigs of RAM, TH Warthog, MFG Crosswind, Win10.
