Since BS won't be out for a few months i was wondering if i could sharpen my 'copter skills on some older sims. I grew up with the novalogic comanche series but puked out c4 for its big step to the arcade (dark) side.

Any suggestions?

Flight simulator 2004. You can at least get a sence of how helicopters (sort of) behave in controlled flight.

Tried that, it becomes boring very soon. I like to put big birds to the ground with harsh conditions but flying a copter in msfs2004 just isnt my thing. Isn't there a attack copter sim - i read something about havoc - which is being played online?

Apache vs. Havoc followed by Comanche vs. Hokum. They can be integrated into one so you have all six dynamic campaigns and all 4 helos. There are numerous upgrades to this sim so I'd suggest checking the forum at SimHQ for starters.

i386DX40@42 MHz w/i387 CP, 4 MB RAM (8*512 kB), Trident 8900C 1 MB w/16-bit RAMDAC ISA, Quantum 340 MB UDMA33, SB 16, DOS 6.22 w/QEMM + Win3.11CE, Quickshot 1btn 2axis, Numpad as hat. 2 FPH on a good day, 1 FPH avg.

DISCLAIMER: My posts are still absolutely useless. Just finding excuses not to learn the F-14 (HB's Swansong?).

Annoyed by my posts? Please consider donating. Once the target sum is reached, I'll be off to somewhere nice I promise not to post from. I'd buy that for a dollar!

I see to recall a free game that was all about simulating a rescue helicopter, and doing so rather well ... anyone know it?

Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D

I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda

Search and Rescue 4 was the last installment of the series. It is a very underrated sim. But, It also is one of the most difficult, partly that its flight physics are too advanced vesus the simplicity of the controls. This is just a stick and rudder sim, but its physics could support a complete array of complex controls.

Real pilots have stated this about the sim. Stating it was harder than the real thing.

But it is cool to fly from hospital to a crowded city street and pick up a pedestrian that got hit by a car. Or kids that were drag racing and wrecked. They could build so much into this little sim, but havent. Thats why it remains so obscure.

and don't forget:

ah memories :)

in its day i did enjoy commanche vs hokum, its a little simple looking these days though.

also i know its boring but turn up the flight difficulty to max in fs2004 and it takes a bit of practice not to make a mess of it, especially to hover etc, and thats one skill i think is worth mastering fo the BS, sure it will handle differently but essentially it is bound to be similar.

I havn't played that one ggg87, but I remember LYNX on ZXSpectrum/Timex.

Although I never had more fun with any other action heli game like with those 3 games I've listed above. I skipped Longbow2 because it run to slow on my PC.

True, flight model in SAR is really good. Too bad it doesn't support TrackIR.

Another ''underdog'' is Apache Longbow Assault series http://www.gamespot.com/pc/sim/apachelongbowassault/review.html

Nothing fancy, doesn't support TiR, not even close to being a sim, but one thing that it has, is a great flight model.

Check out EECH over at SimHQ I'm ukSleek over there..weve just started a screen shot thread ect lot's of modding going on since Razorworks released the source code a while ago..take a look ;)

My site i've just opened at Putfile.com..nothing spectacular..some short vid's i made and more screen's for newbies to EECH.

Full TIR 6DOf in the Commanche (RAH-66)and Hokum (KA-52) and all helis are flyables now.

Ok,the flight FM isn't all that but it's got a dynamic campaign and is fun to fly

Considering the sim's 5/6 yrs old the modders have done a great job ;)
