WASHINGTON – The Air Force chief of staff will name the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter by June 30, choosing from six monikers that range from the historic to the arcane, military and industry officials say.

Officials at Lockheed Martin Corp., which largely builds the new multiservice stealth aircraft in Fort Worth, hope President Bush will announce the winning name in a visit to the factory proposed for July 7.

The six finalists being considered by Gen. T. Michael "Buzz" Moseley, according to officials who spoke on condition of anonymity, include two based on famed World War II fighters: Lightning II – the odds-on favorite – and Spitfire II.

The P-38 Lightning was built by Lockheed and flown by Richard Bong, the leading American ace of World War II with 40 kills of enemy aircraft.

The Spitfire was the British fighter credited with winning the 1940 Battle of Britain by taking on German fighters and bombers.

The F-35, which got its numerical designation after Lockheed won the contract five years ago, is to make its first flight this fall.

The plane is to be built in three versions, including an F-35B that can take off and land vertically, for three U.S. services and eight allies, including Britain.

The Air Force and Navy both proposed Lightning II, while the Marine Corps advocated Spitfire II, said a U.S. officer familiar with the deliberations.

The Air Force also submitted finalists Cyclone and Reaper, this officer said.

The finalists also include two more curious suggestions – Black Mamba and Piasa.

They were among several submitted by some of the allies that are partners in developing the F-35, industry and military officials said.

What do you guys think?

F-35 Lightning II is my pick! :joystick:

Had this argument somewhere else, I'd say we name it Vampire II. Or just Vampire, we're not usually in the habit of sticking on numbers after we give things the same name as something old in Britland ;)

Wasn't the Raptor going to the Lightning III at some point?

And Spitfire, err, no. That would be teh sacrilege.

Cyclone sounds too much like a vacuum cleaner. Why not call it the F-35 Dyson?

Raptor too, rename the thing that flies under that name to "Duckie" :)

Vampire is a cool name for the F-35, but they'll settle on bird's names, it will be called like "Grey Parrot" or something. Ooh, Grey Parrot sounds like a black project :P

hmm thay are all sissy names. neither Spitfire or Lightning II fit the plane, since Lightning was already suggested for the raptor, and it would have been suitable for a heavier and more powerfull fighter than the F-35 is.

I also dont see spitfire II since it wont be a pure AA defense fighter as the WW2 counterpart was, and it gained that name due to the amount of firepower spewing out of the wings in the form of heavy tracers.

and WTH is "piasa"? LOL

Black mamba?! are they kiding us?

Reaper is the only other feasible candidate but it sounds like taken out of a space SIM like wing commander :D

Whats wrong with those peaople? where their imaginations?

I would name it BOBCAT or better yet, WILDCAT or HEllcat, WASP, something like that.

Hopefully they won't take any inspiration from the folks who have been naming new autos.

It seems there must be some good astronomical/mythological names left unused.

Icarus - no, that won't work

Paris - too French

Achilles - asking for trouble

Gryphon - hmm...

Hydra - too wet

Pegasus - draws too many flies but the bombs are lethal

This ain't easy folks...

Ares - too conceited

I give up.

Spitfire II it is. :d

Wild/ hellcat

Don't forget the Tigercat and Bearcat. But the -cat names have all been naval. Doesn't bode well.

Call it the USS Enterprise, nobody will believe you have like 300 big nuclear carriers/spaceships with Warp capability.

Call it the Scimitar, but I guess it sounds too British.

Keep calling it the Joint Strike Fighter, our pilots would love the name and spread the word as well. Now where's that drawing of an F-35 in RNAF (KLU) markings?
