It wouldn't be a Viggen if it didn't have reverse thrust :)

I'm certain it will be implemented, if it's not there already.

Since they have stated that it is >95% complete part from some visuals (and possibly A/G radar) im pretty sure its already implemented :P

I got the sense that most of what's remaining has to do with visuals, so i'm guessing it's more or less feature complete with some polish being applied right now. :-)

Well if youre going from the New years eve update.

Then he never said the Viggen was 95% complete.

This is what he said about the AJS 37

(its a part of the New years eve Update)

The simple but honest truth is: they're just not quite there yet. At least visually.

If a cockpit is 95% done and but there is a big white blob instead of a HUD– we'd rather ensure that we get that done before disappointing you.

It will be a few more weeks until we are ready.

First thing I'm going to do is stall, hit the thrust reversers and attempt backwards flight

Seeing as the Thrust Reversers dont work in the Air i dont see how that will do much ^^.

My understanding is the Main wheels need to be on the ground before the reverser can be activated.

Yep. If you want to pre-set the thrust reverser to automatically engage on touchdown, just pull the reverser handle while in the air. When there's weight on the right main gear, it'll start closing the hatches, but if the nose gear doesn't compress within one second it'll abort reversing until the nose gear compresses. There's also an extra failsafe that prevents the reverser from engaging if the landing gear switch is in the "landing gear up" position.

Just a Viggen picture...

Thats one of the Few of the Special painted ones that are for the AJS 37 instead ot the JA 37.

(and the only complete recolour of a AJS 37 i know of)

Please continue...I love pictures!

Nice! Bummer that will prevent my special manuever, lol, but it's good you can set them up to automatically engage when there is weight on wheels. I bet that will make for some very short landings!

Its a saftey Feature.

Since engaging the Reverser in the air will cause you to loose all airspeed and lift in an instant and stall.

The saftey was to prevent pilots from activating it to early (just before landing)

as that would result in a hard crash to the ground.

Which in a best case would result in badly stressed or damaged Landing gears or in worse case a crash with the aircraft destroyed and the pilot dead.

Plus, if I understood it correctly, the hydraulics used for the thrust reverser are pretty slow so it takes about 5 seconds for them to fully close/open. So even if there wasn't anything preventing you from using it in mid-air it would be quite difficult to do so effectively because of this.

I try not to read this thread to much, getting too excited for the Viggen, it sounds like a wonderful aircraft to experience. The possibilities it presents for campaigns is enormous as well.

The Viggen in its natural habitat (a JA 37, though):

Landing and taxiing within the first few minutes, then some "dead air", takeoff again at around 16:30.

I feel the need to pull the breaks on my hype train here. While I have no doubts of the quality we will see when they are ready, I have been checking here so often since they said something would be released by now. Im sure I'll hear about it when it's announced from the squadron. I really thought we would have an official announcement by now.

Anyway, thanks all here for the great information on what the bird is and what it can do. I look forward to discussing it when we here something about when!

Slightly off-topic, but if there was to be a JA 37 in the future, which version of it would you guys prefer?

I'm leaning towards the JA 37C since although it's not the most capabale version, I feel like it's probably the most representative of what the JA 37's were (for the most part of their life) since it had the original cockpit and electronics - but in their most upgraded version. Although a JA 37D would be really cool as well, it's almost a bit more like a Gripen in disguise with its new central computer, large LCD-screens and AIM-120's.

What do you guys think?

I agree, modelling the most iconic variants of aircraft makes the most sense to me. I'd rather see aircraft in their most operated configurations fighting era appropriate foes than obscure amraam capable models that would be annihilated by kinematicly superior 4th gen fighters. If you know what I mean.

Though of course I'd rather see a Draken to fight the 21 and F5 than a JA37 just now.

My thoughts exactly! It seems to me that there's a bit of a tendency to choose the latest/greatest and most upgraded version of an aircraft (or other vehicle) when modelling them in a computer game, and I think that's a shame since it's not very historical. You just end up having battles between obscure models that are then really just fantasy battles that have little to do with how it might have been in reality.

I'm not saying that DCS is the worst offender when it comes to this, but that might be largely because the latest and greatest versions are often still classified to some extent.

Ideally, I want a package containing both JA-37 and JA-37D, sort fo like how F-14 is being developed right now.

However, if such option proves unfeasible and a single version would be the only option, I'd agree with prefering the earlier version, as it fits nicely with DCS : 70s-80s which is becoming a thing (and is my favorite era as far as jets go).

But for an F-4, I'd rather prefer the latest, F-4E, but again this coincides with most produced variant definition too, as well that general era.

Ideally, when possible both a latest greatest and a mid or early variant would be my pick for most aircraft, but when that's not possible, for some aircraft I prefer latest-greatest, and yet for others some other version. Depends on many things :).

Wishlist: F-4E Block 53 +, MiG-27K, Su-17M3 or M4, AH-1F or W circa 80s or early 90s, J35 Draken, Kfir C7, Mirage III/V

I think a JA 37D would be harder to do due to Classified documents.

a JA 37C would be easier and a base JA 37 (pre 1993)

would be the easiest.

While the JA 37D is the most capable variant with Aim-120s the more base JA 37 is still pretty capable even if its Limited to 2x Skyflash missile (comparable to Aim-7M) and 4 aim-9s (All aspect Aim-9L)

Id be happiest with a JA 37D and a JA 37 variant.

Since i think that would please the most ppl.

But it would also mean alot more work and i think its less likely.

And im kinda split i want a JA 37D to show ppl the capabilities for the Viggen at its best but i also want a base JA 37 as that was the most commone variant.

Is it just me or is the lack of official news regarding this module a bit disturbing? I mean we are halfway through March now. I am not asking for a release date or anything but something official would be nice as a change to 150+ pages of speculation. :music_whistling:

I'm always worried, even when i know i shouldn't be..

Fair enough, I am a WWII fan, of course I am excited and worried what will make it to my computer, but I know the guys are busting their tails... even if they dont come and tell us that every day.
