Yes they work and also the lightening of flares lights weapons is so freaking immersive now when you see it flash into your pit and on aircraft

Also is it just me but is their a new low level terrain texture that comes in now? I think their is and it looks great going Mach chicken at 10m in the shark!

After comparing before and after terrain self shadows in my screenshots after the update to 2.01 I prefer the old way...ie off.

You now get a big shadow covering the myriad smaller shadows in the mesh resulting in a lesser looking complexity of terrain.

Please ED put in an option for this.

Just my 2 cents.:pilotfly:

Hi guys!

Yesterday I decided to pùll the trigger and purchased the bundle A10C+RedFlag Campaing+NTTR (I thik it was a good deal) and I have just tested it and YES!!!!!!!!! it looks like terrain shadows are working now!!!!!!!!:cheer3nc::notworthy: looks like they were waiting for me to enable them  ...

To me, terrain looks WAY better now!!!, thats the way it would look in real life...the only "let down" is that the game lacks ambient occlusion and so it doesnt look perfect in shadows...if they implement it shadows would look a lot better...

Btw, I have noticed that clouds shadows are not working over aircrafts (in 1.5.2 they work)

Also I attached a screen I have just take with the shadows (All maxed out)...yes! they are working!!damn!, I have not played a second without them after all :D

Thanks ED!!

Alpha,

Features are enabled as they are tweaked and tested.

New Clouds and Cloud Shadows are still disabled.

That's an important step in the right direction; looks fantastic. Amazing how much more immersion this creates.

On the flip side, terrain shadows currently do not affect aircraft/vehicles passing through them (hope that will be implemented later), and the self-shading of buildings doesn't work yet either (i.e., a tall building currently does not cast its shadow on a less tall building, even though that building would be in its shade; the tall building's shadow is only seen on the ground). I tested that with maxed-out shadow settings, with flat shadows on/off respectively.

It certainly is nice to see the progress. Good job, ED!

Make sure you dont have Flat Shadows Option checked.

From my post: "I tested that with maxed-out shadow settings, with flat shadows on/off respectively."

So yeah, tried both options, no joy. Still WIP, I get that.

Are you sure? I could have sworn that was in the release version. Buildings shadowing other buildings was definitely there previously.

About the buildings self shading/projected shadows: it's definitely still there (mission replay):

Shadows=High, Flat Shadows=OFF

Maybe something has been changed in your settings, rrohde?

[EDIT: and from what I tested, the aircraft lighting and the cockpit lighting are not affected by the buildings and terrain projected shadows]

I have tested this and I ONLY have buildings self shadowing when flat shadows = off...is this supposed to be the normal behaviour?? I ask because this way shadows are way lower quality so we have to choose between high quality or self shadowing?

Also I have noticed that "new" terrain self shadowing has a problem...shadows are not coherent with sun position!...in the screens you can see how the sun is A LOT higher than shadows projection which is something impossible (I was flying very low to be able to trace the ray between sun and top of the mountains and as you can see, being totally inside the shadow projected area I can clearly view the sun). Its like shadows are generated separately from the light source (sun)...maybe a bug, maybe because WIP???dont know if we should report this...

Screens attached.
