I installed BS1, and ran the sim so that it would ask me for my key.. I input the key and got into the sim which I then exited so that I could install the "upgrade" to BS2. Now its asking for another key and wont accept my BS1 key.

What did I miss or do wrong?

I filed a ticket and was pointed to this:

https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/support/faq/#1494986

Which I have done.. I will uninstall and reinstall <again> but support offered no help other than that.

When I patched DCS world this morning I was asked for my product key for BS2, yet when I launch BS2 I wasnt asked for any key and was put into DCS Combined Arms and I can view my aircraft but not enter the cockpit.

Ive reinstalled and done this dance multiple times, and have had no change in the outcome.

What you are missing is ... well, the BS2 Upgrade key.

BS2 requires either a BS2 key or a BS2 Upgrade key. Furthermore, a BS2 Upgrade key requires an activated BS1 installation .... which in turn requires an BS1 key.

In short: BS2 = BS2 Upgrade + BS1

I never got a BS2 upgrade key... was the upgrade from BS1 to BS2 free or had to be purchased?

Also I reinstalled BS1 just now and I am not seeing how to activate the game with my existing key...

edit: Just found the application titled "protect" which I ran and it said the product was already active and asked me to activate it again anyways which I did do.. ill try this "upgrade" again.

It had to be purchased.

The upgrade? That doesnt sound right..

I purchased BS1 and never bought BS2 yet there is an upgrade out for BS1 to BS2 yet there is no way to pay for it. I can only buy BS2 outright. I cannot pay for the update.

I do not believe the upgrade is offered any longer.

However I believe ED is currently running a sale that includes BS2 full version for DCS World through tomorrow I think.

Well the download exists:

https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/downloads/modules/dcs_black_shark_2_upgrade/

However... I updated dcs world today and that link no longer works with the new world. Im either SOL and have to buy standalone BS2 and forgo the fact that I OWN BS1 and the upgrade to BS2 or wait for this upgrade to <<hopefully>> get released.

BS2 is on sale, however I do not have the funds to buy this nor do I feel like I should.

The response in the ticket I filed, said to reinstall and make sure I activate BS1 prior to upgrading. They never said that I would have to buy anything..

I am a little confused. You had stated you had never bought the BS2 upgrade, but then you went on to state you own BS1 and the upgrade to BS2.

Right or wrong, bottom line is:

If you have a key to the BS2 upgrade version, you can install it into DCS World as long as you have BS1 installed it can reference to.

If you do not have a previous BS2 upgrade purchase, you are SOL as it stands currently as it is no longer offered by ED, only the full BS2 version is available now for purchase.

Personally I wish they would just make the full version available at no charge to any BS1 key owner to make all of this go away, as it does keep coming up. But it is the way it is currently.

Their support person should have brought this up.. BS2 doesnt show up as something Ive purchased but then why did it let me install it before? Or are all the modules like this? I just cant install it now since DCS world has updated recently.

Purchasing Black Shark

BS2 was originally supposed to be a free upgrade. The work turned out to be too time consuming and cost way more than planned, so BS2 became a new module.

For BS1 owners, an upgrade was offered at a lower price compared to the full version. In order to activate the upgrade, to this day BS1 is required to be installed and activated as well.

However, the upgrade turned out to cause lots of activation issues (as recent as with the "Republic" DLC campaign that was released a few weeks ago). That, I believe, is the reason the upgrade from BS1 to BS2 has long been deprecated and is no longer available for purchase, only the full version is available right now. As was said before, it's on sale right now for a reduced price.

So much for the history lesson. The thing is, you can keep flying BS1 as long as you like, since you purchased it. If you haven't purchased either the BS2 upgrade while it was still available, or BS2 full, then you can't activate and fly BS2, period.

Downloading and installing Black Shark

Concerning the installation, up until recently, you could download and install all modules free of charge - but of course you have to have a key in order to activate them, or they'll just collect dust on your HDD. ;)

Since many people purchased the BS2 Upgrade, the installer was still available for download (even though it has not been available for purchase for a long time, see above :smartass:).

I believe this changed, as the most recent version of DCS, 1.5, requires all modules to be downloaded and installed via the module manager. Basically, the check whether you actually have a key to a module is moved forward now, since the module manager will only allow you to download and install modules that are linked to your account. As far as actually flying a module, it really doesn't matter whether you use the module manager or the old standalone installers - without activation, you couldn't fly them anyway, and so the new method should makes things easier to understand.

Yeah I can see this becoming a major PITA down the line if I was even able to install this. I may just buy the module then while its on sale today or just wait for the next super sale.

Everyone here has been 500000x's more helpful than "support". I appreciate it!

In their defense, most of the ED team are enjoying the Russian holidays right now.

Edit: In any case I can't praise BS2 enough, it's much better than the old BS1 and much more content is available for it. Just be aware that the hardware requirements are a lot higher, but if you already have DCS World, you should get a good idea how well it performs on your system, especially if you already have one of the other DCS modules (but the free Su-25T and TF-51D for DCS World should give a good general idea how well it works).

For what it's worth, I recently asked support if I could just have the BS2 key. Since I own BS1, and the BS2 *upgrade* key. It's annoying having to install BS1 when I have I no intention of playing. But they said it was not possible. Not a major deal, just a bit of a pain in the butt.

You are very welcome!

Fwiw, I bit the bullet and purchased the full version of BS2 even though I already owned BS1, just to avoid this type of thing going forward down the road. I picked it up on a sale some time ago, and am very glad I did.

I did not want to be hampered with having to have BS1 installed any time I wanted to re-install BS2.
