Which are the best modules so far ?

I think I have them all, and to me the best are still A-10 and Ka-50. They are the most complex and feel "complete". DCS was built around those two modules plus Flaming Cliffs, and it shows.

Other modules, while still quality simulations, are either incomplete (those in beta) or out of place. Like WWII/Korea airplanes with abysmal AI, no period correct terrain and ground units. Training aircraft without EFT and BFT-like training scenarios. Transport helicopters with limited support from the engine for hauling troops and cargo.

The situation is slowly getting better, but we're not there yet :)

Hardware: VPForce Rhino, FSSB R3 Ultra, Virpil WarBRD, Hotas Warthog, Winwing F15EX, Slaw Rudder, GVL224 Trio Throttle, Thrustmaster MFDs, Saitek Trim wheel, Trackir 5, Quest Pro

I'm new to DCS and only have a handful of modules. I know eventually I'll end up with them all but every time I log on I have a mood for a certain aircraft. For example I love the Ka-50 but occasionally I feel like flying something other than a helicopter. Similarly with the P-51d, when I don't feel like getting chased around by German planes I get in a modern jet and swoop on the locals. I really do love them all and expect by doing so I'll never fully learn how to fly one of them properly.

Keep up the good work everyone, I've never enjoyed myself so much in front of the screen.

My module library is far from complete, because I haven't had time to carry on flying in DCS in the last year and a half (returning now, though! :))

I have: Ka-50, Huey, Mi-8, P51D, A10C, and -purchased a few days ago- the MiG 21.

It is really hard to pick a winner! I love all of the modules, except for the A10C, which I couldn't really warm up to. Guess I have to spend more time with it.

Ka-50: Attack helicopter which is very different than the Huey or Mi-8. It's packed with systems and weaponry to get the head around. Allows for very different tactics.

Huey: The essence of chopping through the air! Nothing else conveys the feeling of flying (or beating air into submission) quite as well as the Huey.

Mi-8: Quirky big chopper, with lots of knobs and switches. Love it too, although I can't really say why. Maybe, because it's all these little challenges hidden in it, like operating the radio properly, doppler etc. Feels like discovering something new every time I hop into it.

P51D Mustang: Was the first properly modelled WWII era aircraft in DCS. Eventually I might not need to pray any more before touchdown! ;) (Man this thing is hard to land.)

MiG-21: Another module I will love for sure. Just getting to grips with it at the moment... Wait, why does it feel so light after the last very tight turn? Oh no, the bombs fell off! :music_whistling: It's just this attention to details (like all modules, to be fair) which is so addictive and challenging.

I've only had it for a few days, but it's a lot of fun already.

There's no way I can name a favourite. Like Camembert, what I fly on any given day depends on my mood. Good thing is that there's a module for every mood! :D

My humble rig: Windows 10 pro 64bit; i7-6700k on Gigabyte Z170X G7; 32GB; MSI 980ti Twin Frozr; 512GB Samsung 950 Pro (NVMe/PCIe x4); 1TB Samsung 850 Pro; Komplete Audio 6; TrackIR 5 Pro;

DCS 2.5 with almost all modules; favourites: Shark, Mi-8, Harrier, Viggen, Mirage, Hornet

I feel like one can make the same point about the A-10 and Ka-50. I mean, ground forces never really react to your actions. It's like there's a list of stuff you have to do: find and kill AA, use remaining missiles/bombs on tanks, gun everything else, go home. It gets a bit more interesting when you use unguided munitions only, but even then, you're fighting a completely static and predictable enemy.

I think CA was supposed to alleviate this, in multiplayer anyway, but it doesn't seem to be doing it's job yet.

I've actually been flying the P-51 much more than the Hog and Shark the past year or two mainly for this reason.

I own the whole modules:

Best exterior textures=L-39 + Mig-15

Best cockpit textures=Mig-21 (One of the BEST ever)

Best realistic feeling of taxing + takeoff + landing touchdown + cockpit shaking=Su-25

Best looking pilot textures=L-39 + Mustang

For the Helis:

Best exterior textures=Mi-8

Best cockpit textures=Mi-8 + Huey

Best realistic flying=Mi-8 + Huey

In my opinion :)

try them all you will love them all and probably find a favourite.

yeah, bring back shareware, let all the planes in DCS have TF-51 type versions or something, no pylons at all, no smoke, nothing. so people'd have to buy them even for aerobatics shows.

though, I pretty much buy everything anyways, they are all pretty good.

I'm really digging the Mirage 2000 so far but it's not likely to be ready for primetime for quite a few months yet. But once it's at a stage beyond any major changes to the sensors and other symbology elements and the radar is all hashed out, it's going to be a blast to fight in. I just wish it carried like, 2 more missiles.

For when it goes wrong: Win10x64, GTX1080, Intel i7 @3.5 GHz, 32GB DDR3, Warthog HOTAS, Saitek combat rudder pedals, TrackIR 5 / Vive Pro, a case of Pabst, The Funk

I just picked up the L-39, the MiG-15, and the Gazelle this morning. I would highly recommend all of them.

The L-39 is a real sports car. If you like to fly non-combat just to enjoy the airplanes, this is a flathatter's dream.

The MiG-15 is also an amazing module and well worth the money.

The Gazelle is an outstanding helicopter and I'm sure they'll be refining it further, though so far, I have no complaints.

Um, it's the slowest, the least powerful, and the least maneuverable airplane in DCS. After flying L-39 for a while, everything else* feels like a sportscar to me, even A-10. ;)

*Except C-101 and Hawk, but I tried them only with SFM.

I tend to go through most of them in spurts. I'll fly the Ka50 for a week, get tired of it and switch to the a-10c for a bit. Those are probably the two that get the most stick time. I've been flying the L-39za a lot recently as well. It's maybe not the fastest or most maneuverable but for some reason I just really enjoy flying it. Maybe it's the simplicity, I don't have to (re) learn all the systems every time I get in, I can just get in and go. Additionally, it's a plane that a guy could actually buy and fly privately if he ever had a spare half million so I think that's part of the appeal for me as well.

The other planes I have (F-86 & FW-190) don't seem to get as much stick time. With the -86 I get frustrated with the seeming ineffectiveness of the guns. I can sit there behind a Mig-15 and unload completely, scoring good hits according to the debrief and yet it still flies. Really fun to fly though. Maybe I'd like the Mig-15 better.

The 190 I just don't think I've had enough time to try out so I'm not quite in love with it yet. I did have a great "fast mission" experience, set it up as a dog-fight 2 on 4 expecting that the computer would set me up against similar opponents, turns out it was 2 190's against 4 mig-29's... a very short engagement but I did get 1 mig on the merge with a lucky cannon burst.

More and more I'm moving away from the flaming cliffs planes. Now that I'm used to the clickable cockpit I find having to remember keyboard commands for everything rather tedious.

Really looking forward to the F/A-18, & the mirage showing up on steam. Hoping for some Vietnam war era aircraft as well.

Cheers,

and discovered the L39 is a blast, really good

She's absolutely great. A capable COIN bird, plus perfect for just fooling around in the sky. Can't put my finger on it, but _something_ about her just tugs at my heartstrings SOOOO good.... love her :)

Kudos ED for a great module. I don't know who makes the decisions about the machines you do, but this choice at least was a clear 10/10. Just a gorgeous aircraft - and so well modelled too :)

The DCS Mi-8MTV2. The best aviational BBW experience you could ever dream of.

I really enjoy helicopter hunting missions with the L-39Za. I had a great fast mission set up hunting helicopters with a solid ceiling at ~500ft AGL. You had to drop in, locate the helo's and smoke em before you ran out of terrain & had to climb above the layer again. One of the most enjoyable flights I've had in a while.

I'm betting that we fly differently and have a different understanding of the term, "sports car".

For flathatting and aerobatics, the L-39 is my favorite module. I find it HIGHLY maneuverable despite the fact that it is not the fastest plane in DCS. It's fast enough for aerobatics.

I'm retired from real life military aviation and that's just my opinion, based on my point of view formed over all these years. There's a certain way I like to fly for fun and the L-39 does it well for me.

If L-39 is fast and maneuverable enough for flathatting and aerobatics, so is every other DCS aircraft.

But I understand that flying such plane in the simulator also has its charm.

Well, it's kind of like a car with a short wheelbase. It just feels a bit snappier when you throw it around. I like the way it flies when I want to try to overstress the airframe.

You make me want to buy it now! Ha. What did you fly in the military?

Nothing that anyone will ever request as a module in DCS, LOL! It was somewhat less than exciting.

Haha.. Well I have some MC-12 time.. It doesn't get much boring than that . Granted it's fun I guess.. Lol

The UC-12B is on my list. So I'll see your MC-12 and raise you a C-117D, LOL!

This is interesting to hear other people's views of their module purchase. Still love the Mig 15/ Saber but the L39 is great. I fly it all the time now.
