Mt5_Roie Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 Here's a flight I did with the Gazelle: Also flew the Mirage as well: This weekend I"m planning on spending several hours testing around 15 different modules to see how they look. Hopefully I can get 2.0.2 to coperate nicely for it. Coder - Oculus Rift Guy - Court Jester

DerekSpeare Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 Thanks, Roie! I really enjoy the videos you make with the Oculus. I agree the the dot needs improvement - a lot of it. It needs to fade off unless it senses proximity to cockpit/menu control elements. Have you done a video talking about the differences between the DK2 and CV1? I am patiently awaiting mine, but still using the DK2. Mt5_Roie Posted April 23, 2016 Posted April 23, 2016 (edited) My plan this weekend is to fly around 14 modules in DCS with the CV! to test it out. I created a mission today to help with it and will record tomorrow. Just hoping my gopro can record that long. So for recording I use Xsplit Broadcaster for grabbing the DCS video. I use a gopro to record me. I do have a webcam, but find the resolution on it isn't as good as the gopro. I might upgrade it someday but we'll see. For the differences, the CV1 is lighter then the DK2. I don't know exact numbers but it very noticable how much less it weights Also the CV1 forms to the head a lot nicer. The DK2 needed a lot of tweaking to stay on your head for long periods of time. The CV1 has three straps, but has a string loaded mechanism that helps stay on the head better. With the DK2 my daughers always had to hold it up with there heads, with the CV1 they can just sit back and enjoy (will try to get a video of them sometime). The DK2 does have some advantages. It can run on some older hardware is you still have the older Runtime for it. One of my favorite things to do was put DCS on my laptop and bring the laptop to tech meetings and replay a L-39 flight. I would put the person in the back seat and have them enjoy the flight. Also had a Huey flight recorded so they can feel the difference. Currently I don't have a laptop that could run the CV1. Another difference is the cables coming out of the device. The DK2 has two cables coming out, the CV1 has one. I find that the one cable is a bit nicer when moving around. I usually have my headset on and so limiting the cables around me is nice. There is also easier setup in the CV1 as well. With the DK2 you needed a coin to adjust the distance of the lens to the eye. You didn't have the option of bringing the lenses closer either. The CV1 has a slide at the bottom that moves the lenses closer or apart and it's easy to configure the CV1. I haven't tried wearing glasses with the CV1 yet, but it was a little pain with the DK2. I might try it soon if I feel like wearing my glasses instead of contacts. Of course, everyone knows he CV1 has double the resolution of the DK2. It really shows when you use it. Things are so much sharper with the CV1. That's the basics. I will post Gazelle related videos on the Polychop channel. Purg Posted April 23, 2016 Posted April 23, 2016 Thanks Roie - your videos alone are what's keeping me hyped getting mine. We've had nothing but problems getting them into Australia (customs are currently holding them up) beyond the delays from Oculus. I've been trickling your videos to friends, and they've been universally well received.
Mt5_Roie Posted April 23, 2016 Posted April 23, 2016 (edited) So just flew for about 1.5 hours this morning with the rift and discovered something. Xsplit broadcaster files don't like to go over 8 gigs. The video recorder crashed. I was able to get the video and some of the audio so I'm going to still use it. The audio that is missing will come from my go pro so won't be as good....but still better then having to re-record everything. Will hopefully edit and publish it tonight. EDIT: Was able to recover the audio from the recording. Rendering now and will upload. Total video is a little over an hour. Edited April 23, 2016 by Mt5_Roie Coder - Oculus Rift Guy - Court Jester
Vivoune Posted April 23, 2016 Posted April 23, 2016 Good to hear that Roie, loosing a whole session can be quite the bummer. I'd love to hear you talk a bit more about the actual sense of presence and immersion as well as cockpit usability, target searching etc. I know VR's been out for some time now since Dk1 but hearing how people are enjoying it never gets old! Good work regardless and thanks for sharing it with us. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Mt5_Roie Posted April 23, 2016 Posted April 23, 2016 That is a tricky one. But something I've talked about in some of my videos. There are a couple ways to look at it. First if you compare it with flying with a Track-IR then there is what I call the physical aspect. If I fly with the Track-IR I can look left and right and up and down and go beyond the range of my 21" screen and see the physical objects in my room. I can see my arcade machine (which is next to my pit), I can see the cat being bad and trying to chew on some expensive cords, I can hear my kids misbehaving. With the Rift on, every where I look, Im in that world. If I have my Astro A40 headset on, I can only hear whats in the virtual world I'm in. I'm totally taken somewhere besides my basement. It's really like having a lucid dream. Now there is a second part which also physical, but deals more with psychology. The rift is essentially fooling your brain into thinking it's in motions, when it's really not. Sort of like Star Tours at Disney world if you've ever been. By combing both a visual and auditory environment, your brain can get fooled. In DCS, I find that in planes, I can sense the motion - but I'm not scared. I feel safe surrounded in my cockpit. But if I fly upside down, there is a sense that I could fall out and my fear of heights kicks in quickly. For me, its like a weird feeling in my stomach that tells me I'm in danger. I call it my spidey sense. In the real world I get it when I"m somewhere high and not protected (like in a building). I can even experience it if my kids get close to a ledge in an unsafe area. I think humans developed these senses as a survival mechanism. Now helicopters....it's a whole other ballpark here. The cockpits are much more open, you can usually see below you and all the way around you. Pretty much as soon as I take off my spidey sense goes off. My brain is screaming loudly for me to put this thing down and stay safe, but I'm actively ignoring it and flying the helicopter. Its a lot more real for me then it is in the airplanes. I find that when I fly with the rift, I really don't want to crash. I want to preserve my virtual life as much as possible. That's my take on it. I do find it hard to sometimes convey that when presenting something that is 3d in a 2d format of youtube. Good to hear that Roie, loosing a whole session can be quite the bummer. This is the part that 60" 4K monitor users and 3 X monitor users with TrackIR (myself, included) totally miss. The brain being tricked into thinking you're really flying. No amount of monitors and TrackIR can fool your brain. VR absolutely fools your brain. As the Chief Scientist of Oculus said, when you stand on a ledge of a skyscraper on your monitor, it's ho-hum. When you do it in VR, everyone freaks out. Mt5_Roie Posted April 24, 2016 Posted April 24, 2016 When you first set up the Rift there are these scenes it plays to show off the Rift. It starts out nice and cute with a virtual wooded area and animals...then on a different planet talking to a alien- then it gets scary. Your on a ledge of a skyscraper looking a the city. There is a huge blimp not to far away - anyone who's afraid of height will have issues. The last one is the coolest though. You in a museum and nothing happens at first. Looking around I noticed a lot of T-rex promotions. Then T-rex shows up and scares the crap out of you. None of this is possible with Triple monitors and Track-IR. Mt5_Roie Posted April 24, 2016 Posted April 24, 2016 I have a i7-4700k running at 4.0ghz. 16 gb of 1800 mhz RAM, EVGA GTX980 card with 4 gb of VRAM, SSD hard drive for the OS and Sim. I didn't save the track for the flight. I was flying non-stop for about 1.5 hours total. I was very tired afterwards from the flying and the haptic feedback chair making it a lot more realistic. awesome. thank you very much for doing this I loved watching this. but I wonder can I ask a couple of things :) firstly can you tell me what your pc spec is please as it looks really smooth even over Vegas. . also do you have a full screen of the incockpit recording ;) I would love to see it on my 60" TV he hehe Again thank you so much for providing these videos  Coder - Oculus Rift Guy - Court Jester
