Lanius Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 How you managed to get more wire to missile? Seems to be a bug.

El Hadji Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 How you managed to get more wire to missile? Seems to be a bug. Yes, surely the missile shouldn't be steerable when you run out of wire and I thought wire length was part of the operational limit here? But then again I'm not an expert on wire-guided missiles. FishDoctor Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 After reaching the limit of the wire the hot cuts of and continues flying unguided in a ballistic way. thats why it works :)

Lanius Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 I just have rl experience of 9K111-1 Konkurs system. Least for it wire is the range of steerable missile. I guess it is same for HOT3. With konkurs you can also steer missile manually if there is too much IR jamming .
Lanius Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 (edited) In video it hit on tracked vehicle which was moving. Makes me wonder how well it is actually modelled. Edited May 5, 2016 by Lanius
Lanius Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 (edited) And when missile receives steer commands from launcher with by wire. Missile constantly makes pitch yaw corrections it doesnt fly staight. And when wire is cut, last steer input is left and there aint no other input to correct flight path. It is pure luck if it hit on anything. Gyros just keep it flying straight from last attitude. enigma6584 Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 Obviously this is a bug. I hope you have reported it in the "bug" thread so the developers can fix this.

Obviously this is a bug. I hope you have reported it in the "bug" thread so the developers can fix this. Lanius has a pretty good explanation about how the extended range is possible. After the wire breaks the missle just continues on a ballistic trajectory and as the rocket motor will continue to burn after the wire breaks it's not implausible. It would be nice to hear from a subject matter expert and the Devs though. "For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and there you will long to return." Leonardo Da Vinci "We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch - we are going back from whence we came." John F. Kennedy
mattebubben Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 Does anybody know the exact range of the HOT 3s wire? Since as the Stated max effective range is 4,300m the wire has to be slightly longer. does anybody know exactly how much longer?. 50-100M? or more? And also. The missile has a top speed of about 864 km/h that translates to around 240 m/s. We dont know the exact range to the targets at the time the missiles hit but lets say it was around 4700-4800 seeing as they had kept moving from his laze in the beginning that read 4900. So if the wire was cut at around 4400 meters the missile would have traveled the rest of the way in less then two seconds. So if we look at the first shot at the moving target its very possible that the missile read one of his last 2 adjustments just before the wire was cut and then continued that direction and that would also follow with the time scale (since if the missile was traveling at the top speed of 240 m/s it would have been around 4300-4400 meters from the target 1,5-2 seconds before impact) So will have to take more testing to see if its working as it should or if its a bug (but from this video there is no real evidence against this being realistic) Maby a Tac-View or something could be helpful in getting accurate info. Or maby simply if you mark a target at range where the wire should have been cut (lets say 4500m+) and have the missile fly over it and once it passes the target (Range marker) try to maneuver it. If the missile can still be manually turned at a range that can be proven to be after the wire cut then its likely a bug.
Kayos Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 Try it over a much longer distance and see if it works. Hopefully it was just because your targets were barely out of range. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
King_Hrothgar Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 It works at up to about 8km, at which point the missile self destructs. Incidentally, the missile does not start losing speed after the rocket motor burns out, it holds a constant speed until impact or self destruct. I do not know if the missile can still be steered beyond 4.3km, but it can definitely hit a static target.
Lanius Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 I have to point out that during flight when missile is on wire, it makes constant corrections to keep ir flare back of the missile on middle of flight path related to the crosshair. And when wire is cut i will drift away from flight path depending what was last control input. So accuracy drops drastically when range increases . It could be a miss even flight time would be short as 2s.
Lanius Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 Dont mind the copilot I made little drawing explain what i mean.
Lanius Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 It seems to working as i describe in picture. Hitting targets at after 6.8km seems to be random. I might move crosshair too fast , and sight loses track of the missile. I continue tests
Lanius Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 At range of 7500m i miss targets by 10m . Missile starts fly straight after rocket engine burns out . I dont have tacview .
Lanius Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 Okay. I found out you cant steer it 4 sec before rocket runs out.
MBot Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 I made little drawing explain what i mean. Good drawing :) You are absolutley right. The same thing should happen when the targeting sight descends behind cover and loses LOS to the missile, even with the wire still intact. Imediate loss of guidance and a deviation of the flight path according to the last steering command.
