Trying to convince people about dx12 and crossfire is trying to sell it... figure of speech.

I never pushed Xfire or DX12 onto anyone,

the last 4 to 5 pages have been me trying to explain to people that the 1080 will not be a magic run DCS at 200 FPS at max details pill they want it to be.

you're 2 weeks and 20 pages behind.

We shall see if the 1080 can pull off 200 fps when amd or Intel makes a CPU that makes the 1080 the bottleneck in DCS...

I. DCS Isn't "CPU Bottle Necked", it's API Bottlenecked by the DX API Layer, which has a Limit to how many commands it can process, regardless of CPU Type/Speed, it's an API Limit, Not a CPU hardware limit, as the Number Of Max Draw Commands Has Jumped Significantly from DX9c -> DX10 -> DX11. You Can Have a 4 Core 9GHz Overclocked Skylake CPU and as soon as the DX11 Draw Commands Pile Up, the Software Layer will bog down commands to the GPU. It's CPU Overhead, Not CPU Bottle Neck.

Morbid curiosity rules my life. If this is the case how are other games getting past it or why is it a problem for DCS and not them. There are definitely titles that perform way better.

We don't have proper SLI/CF support either.

The last two my configurations were SLI (2x770 and now 2x970), but next time I'm going to buy a single card, even if it is "slower" in benchmarks than two cards in SLI at the same price.

SLI/CF simply doesn't work in half of the games I play and most of the simulators.

I agree, I also gave up on SLI, just wasn't worth the trouble (single GTX980 now, possibly a 1080 soon). I also got away from triple screens because of space and the troubles with SLI. I run quite a few different flight/racing sims and getting everything to run smoothly with enough eye candy was irritating. For now an Ultra-Wide (3440x1440) is working fine. VR will be next for me once it's matured a little more.

I was planning on a triple 1440p setup when I get my 1080, would a ultra-wide be better? Space isn't Ann issue, and 1 card can handle 3+1, four in total now, right?

An Ultra wide is more narrow than just two standard (16:9) monitors, on top of that, it probably will have less vertical height than whatever standard monitor(s) you choose.

My two cents.

EDIT: For a single panel, with a GTX 1080, I would suggest that you might consider a large 4k display.

Great posts, skate.

You explained it very well. It is totally true that increasing the pixel density (and/or fps) it's just maths. Since the new gpu increase performance by the typical 25% compared to the real successor (980ti vs 1080), no miracles can be expected. Everything else is just a dream. Again 980 users can upgrade to 1080, 970 to 1070 and both will be happy with the increased performance. But as soon as you increase pixel output per second, this will decrease for sure. If you buy demanding displays you need to buy the bestest gpu and will still struggle with high framerates.

I have learned this the hard way, via triple screen setups (2011) 1600x1200 resolution (around 2010) and hmd (dk2 & cv1). I am now playing on a monitor in a somewhat mainstream resolution. I get great fps on any games with high settings.

In short: better stick with mainstream hardware and you will have a satisfying gaming experience.. Everything else will make your life complicated (software setups, bugs, expensive hardware upgrades).

Ok, well had a spin last night trying out the 1080 and so far I'm happy.

First off a few things to get out of the way.

I'm still running 3930k at 4.6Ghz and not having had the justification just yet to spend a thousand or more on upgrading main board, mem and CPU, it's still pulling its weight though obvious bottleneck per se.

Coming from SLI Titans; before the 1080 made news I was looking at 980Ti. But the fact that SLI doesn't really play too nice depending what your doing and that I going to spend close to $1500 anyway I decided to go with the one 1080 rather than single 980Ti or dual.

Now the 1080 isn't leaps and bounds ahead of SLI 980 or 980Ti. But it is the latest and gives a margin of improvement over it and is the latest tech. One would hope soon driver optimisations will make it better.

I had no fan revving issues, no major heat soak throttling. Soon I'll throw a water block on there.

Now with that said, how is it?

I'm happy so far how it's performing.

Settings used:

All HIGH

HDR on

Mirrors On.

Clutter/grass 260

Trees 9000 ( flying high this doesn't really justify the impact using any higher and with mirrors on)

Preload radius 150000

Res. Cockpit display 512

Flat terrain shadow Off

MSAA x4

Aniso x16

Full screen

Shadows flat only

*F-15 flights only.

DCS 1.5.3 multiplayer @4k

#################

Airport apron\parking areas 42-60FPS

Flying around 55-120FPS

Highest noticed in game upwards of 180fps

2.0 Alpha SP Nevada free flight @4k

#######################

Same settings and similar results.

Ground situations, most frames held at 41-60 fps, but everything still ran quite smooth with no major stuttering headaches.

There are situations when frames plummet, but that's still, due to scenes and objects and existing bugs.

I hope that small update is something for you guys that are curious on performance.

Was it a good decision for me. Yes.

Does it perform well. Yes, and at 4K it runs very nice, and the eye candy is beautiful.

Does it run smooth? This is interesting , yes though this is noticeable mostly at 70fps and over.

There are still some stutters here and there, though I feel this is mostly the scenes hence why I turn tree render visibility all the way down, cause I like my mirrors on :)

So with all that, and being very limited with testing so far I'm enjoying it.

Why not wait till 1080Ti or something else, why. Maybe Mr money bags will upgrade afterwards.

This doesnt show a test where everything is maxed, but the settings applied where it was the best to achieve that min 60fps mark where possible without compromising too much eye candy.

Cheers boys

Most likely because they use graphics engines out of the box that are built by teams that have 10x or more the budget that the entirety of ED have to make due with for the entire package.

Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two.

You are aware that that is an enormous performance hog for very little eye candy?

Outside of Maybe 2 other flight sims, and a few other large scale Shooters, No other games come close to the Object Counts and draw distance of DCS.

And those other Sims have the same problem :-)

Well bugger me, been a while between flights.

Will turn turn this off or is it on, and check again.

Hi dread

You are running on conventional monitors?

What resolution ?

This was lazy testing via DSR on Panasonic 55" on old HDMI

Have yet to try on UHD Panasonic DP

Dredd, what kind of performance did you get before the upgrade?

Gesendet von meinem C6903 mit Tapatalk

With Titans SLI or single, if I could guess about 30-40% less.

Kind of hard to throw a comparison though against 700 series cards without knowing how 900 series runs.

Exactly this.

Take a look at ArmA 3, for example. Same shit, just can't get decent FPS, no matter what HW you're throwing at it.

It's limited by DX API overhead - it's got a lot of objects on a huge landscape. Not what DX9/11 was designed for.

And that's exactly why the ArmA community is also longing for a DX upgrade - which sadly just moved farther into the future on their roadmap.

I bought a EVGA 980ti FTW a few weeks ago because I needed another card for my rift sim rig and was going to step up to their 1080 when it is available. The FTW card runs so good near 1500mhz and the performance in DCS with it is so good that I'm not sure the 1080 will really be all that much better. I will probably step up in the next 2.5 months anyway just because I can but I'm not really seeing much justification for it since I primarily will use it for DCS and FSX and neither of these will take advantage of it currently from what I can tell.
