I lived in Schwetzingen, Heidelberg, and Worms for almost 3 years and

I came to respect the German People ( well back in 1972, it was West Germany,

so I really only was able to meet West Germans ) and I find it very very hard

to believe that if the Mustang has a mirror in 1944 or 45, then WHY would

the Dora not have the same advantage anyway ?

Does anyone have any info about the Dora and Mirrors ?

Thank You, I love to learn.

The early 109 have mirrors in the battle of britan, don't nail me on this but i belive Günther Rall german ace say's the mirrors was absolut useless because of the engine vibration and airframe you see nothing in this mirriors.

190 have also this metall stripe in the canopy frame think there is no point where you can attached usefull this rear mirror, thats only drag for the airframe.

Don't know why US Fighter still use this, think there more likley for ground overwiev on the airfield.

Once you have tasted Flight, you will forever walk the Earth with your Eyes turned Skyward.

Modern jets don't vibrate like piston engine aircraft do.

Intel i7-12700K @ 8x5GHz+4x3.8GHz + 32 GB DDR5 RAM + Nvidia Geforce RTX 2080 (8 GB VRAM) + M.2 SSD + Windows 10 64Bit

DCS Panavia Tornado (IDS) really needs to be a thing!

Ofc dont mean Jet's late Mustang and Thunderbolt for example, and jets dont use this old school fashion mirror outside they are all inside the cannopy.

Just as a sidenote:

:D

Why didn´t german pilots ask for mirrors on the 109, 190?

It´s just the fact that german pilots were tough guys!

They disliked a mirror where the only use would have been

... to powder your nose ...

:D

Different story with the yanks, they thought "fighter pilots make movies" so: "where is my darn mirror, gotta make sure my hairstyling is perfect ..."

Gunther Rall said that they had a mirror on early Bf109E models, but they quickly decided it is usless. Because as he said "it was already too late if you saw someone in the mirror". I guess it is a preference. Why having a piece of equipment that obstructs your forward and upward visbility in already crowded 109 cockpit?

There were accomplished allied pilots who apparently saw some value in the mirrors. Spitfire round mirrors did not come standard.

Not sure why the GAF didn't use them.

Happy 2017 and thank You all for the info about the mirrors.

I wish there was a way to MOD a mirror and have one, just the same.

Spitfire and P51 have em, and they do help. I understand about the

vibration, but I just have this wish

They didn't use mirrors because it killed the frame rate. That and incoming B17 formations caused a lot stutters. I'm sure I saw a Rall Youtube interview on this.

It is on the INTERNET if you do a search.

I'll have to dig the post out but I know someone who asked a current WWII warbird pilot about the mirror on the spitfire and they said the vibrations weren't a issue with it (took a photo as well - though concede that shaking would be minimised if the shutter was high).

Realise that was a Spit and not a Dora, but it does provide some recent observations from someone who flys a WII warbird (for reference it was from the Temora aviation museum in Australia).
