KoN Posted July 10, 2016 Posted July 10, 2016 (edited) OK slowly getting to grips with the Hover , at times i am down too zero speed and still wont kick in , when i do hover and i want to lower collective to get into cover , i drop like a stone and this is with small inputs from my throttle my pilot black outs , i hit the ground like a falling rock , my throttle is still at the halfway mark . I descend like a rock and by the time i have seen it , to rise the power , its too late , surly i should descend slowly . any one else had this . NeilWillis Posted July 10, 2016 Posted July 10, 2016 What you are seeing is called a vortex ring state. The helicopter is behaving exactly as it should when the rate of descent in a hover is too high because it is descending into it's own downwash, and loing lift as a result. The only way out of it is to fly into undisturbed air by moving out of it - but not in the vertical plane. It is worth reading up on the quirks of helicopters, so you know what to expect, and how to avoid or handle it.

NeilWillis Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Yes, that situation is known as "Up Sh!t creek without a paddle". If you descend too slowly that tanks will get you, if you descend too quickly the VR state gets you. The key is to sneak up behind terrain, and pop up, and engage.
Yurgon Posted July 12, 2016 Posted July 12, 2016 so i need to descend slowly not rushed to get out of the way of firing tanks . Let's put it like this. If you're in the way of firing tanks, your tactics leave some things to be desired. ;) The manual states, in the part about the vertical velocity indicator: "The limit for a safe landing is 60 m/mn, just a bit lower than the first mark below the 0 position." You might get away with a faster rate of descent, or you might plummet to death. Practice makes perfect. :D
cichlidfan Posted July 12, 2016 Posted July 12, 2016 Oops! From the thread title, I was thinking the OP wanted to know how to go from hover to falling, which I am an expert at. SFC Tako Posted July 12, 2016 Posted July 12, 2016 Maintaining speed during rapid descent saves you a lot of trouble with the vortex. Or rather, you don't get any vortex at all. When down low in ground effect, you can start "braking". The Gazelle can pretty much stop on a dime. My Semi-Pro Youtube Channel
Aginor Posted July 12, 2016 Posted July 12, 2016 I usually avoid VRS by moving in some direction. Sideways is often a good option. DCSW weapons cheat sheet speed cheat sheet
Rogue Trooper Posted July 12, 2016 Posted July 12, 2016 (edited) There are two ways to attack a target. 1) If you are a high flyer then You use yourself as bait, this works with radar SAMS as the RWR will give you all the warning you need as well as the location of the target, then you can dive and get into cover. For IR missiles or guns you need peripheral vision and a rubber neck (trackeIR). This works very well with the Gazelle but you must sit back and somewhat zoom out so that you can achieve a peripheral vision that you are comfortable with. 2) You always fly low and only climb if the environment allows using the cover whilst climbing. You move in slow and use your camera to find targets and laze distances then plan routes so that you can safely get within range of attacking those targets. If you try to engage a target high and proud at 4Km in this chopper you will die! you will die from VRS (panic) or you will die from the threat (missile or gun)! you must get into cover and then plan your attack. Both methods 1 & 2 listed above require excellent control of the chopper whilst in amongst a tight environment. For cover; Buildings are desirable, mountains are superb, hills are great, undulations maybe the only shit you got (2.0) and sometimes low lying streams leaves you scrapping the bottom of the barrel (2.0). Once you accept low level attack as your only option... the VRS threat is minimal. Whatever your state you are at during the beginning of the engagement, You must manoeuvre so that you start YOUR attack low and you climb to engage and you only climb to allow your sighting camera target acquisition... no more! Mt5_Roie Posted July 12, 2016 Posted July 12, 2016 I have the Gametrex 980 game chair so when I hit the vortex, I get a tactical feedback and can react (as I'm sure a real pilot would as well). Basically push the cyclic forward a bit and collective up to get back to nuetral climb. Coder - Oculus Rift Guy - Court Jester
