Could you get any forward momentum? To skip along until you get ETL

Well, I just finished the "slightly adjusted" version as found in the link above (page 5).

I reduced the troop load from 700kg and 800kg to 450kg and 450kg. The mission is still challenging but doable. I still usually bust one or two skids coming off the mountain though. Makes for an interesting landing at the FARP.

This one worked out well and it's probably a good exercise before doing the "original one". It for sure gives you a good feeling if you managed to do it. Anyway, I'll also have to try the "real one" as well because the starting there of course is harder.

Turn into the wind or the edge of the mountain where it slopes down.

Turn on emergency governor control, raise your collective slowly and 'feel' the chopper pick up slightly forward. Use this momentum and keep feeding collective until you start loosing rotor rpm. If you start loosing rotor RPM, you have to decrease your collective to keep your rpm in the green zone. By then you'd hope that you haven't ran out of flat ground and have gone past translational lift to gain more altitude.

I completed Mt. Elbrus, my first ever mission in DCS, but I was expecting a fanfare "mission complete" pat on the back, at the end and it didn't happen.

Is there an "end mission" trigger, or have I missed something?

I'm totally with you Holbeach it would be nice to have a better fanfare page at the end of missions! The debrief page is nice an all but what about a flashy metal and a sword being sheethed sound! I have some very fond memories of playing Longbow 2 and couldn't wait to reach home base so I could earn that metal page with the cool music! I think I pissed my mom off a lot in those days so many times cause I said I was in a mission and couldn't pause till I finished hehe... It definitely lack thats feel in DCS, I've heard it from others as well. Would that be difficult to implement? I mean there's no fancy physics just a cool new page after debrief a medal after a few points... It's been mentioned before Search the forum for DCS points or whatever you'll find it.

Nope, I definitely didn't see those. Maybe they all went home before I got there.

But I did do this. :drink:

Never mind, it's a great mission. I'll just do it again.

Why did you need to use an adjusted mission. You can climb up there, land and get back down just fine if you fly it the way it tells you?

...well, I never managed to get airborne without crashing. That's why I used the adjusted version with lower weight. Must be lack of skills ;-)

First thing to do, is get rid of 309 lbs of external store thing.

I've had a few goes at this and now that I know that 150 knots down the mountain is OK, I feel more confident in a successful outcome.

Isn't this almost the same like doing the modified mission? ;-) All it does is reducing weight. But I'll anyway once try it this way.

I just did the "original" mission and noticed that there's sort of a "glitch". Once you land and the trigger for embarking is enabled, you could theoretically take off immediately again without waiting to have them on board. So you easily take off while not having the full weight yet. Yes, it's not very honorable and when doing so, you didn't do it right. It's simply cheating. But it's pretty strange that they can still embark while you're aleady in the air...

I completed the whole mission twice today without realizing the update had reset the external store carrier, so I must be getting better at it. :)

But I still didn't get any "mission completed" fanfare. sad.gif

I suggest starting the mission, without the bracket, from the top of the mountain and keep repeating T/O, until you get the technique right, then add it back and repeat, then do the whole mission from the start.

Edit: I finally got a "Mission Success" pat on the back, but not for the mission quite as originally intended.

After trying to do a couple of running starts and failing with a crash, i now take off using a full right rudder turn.

As this provides enough thrust to the main disk to get enough height to get over that hump. (no low RPM warning)

yes you take off spinning to the right. and everyone in the back screams.

but once you are high enough you can use left rudder to straighten her up and gain enough transitional speed for lift. before the low RPM sends you back into the mountain. you just have to watch out for your tail on the walls of the notch.

much easier than bump starting.. and quicker too.

i remembered mason does it in chickenhawk to get out of a minefield he is hovering in.. when he cant get enough lift to clear the barbedwire fence at its edge.. due to being overloaded.

so its amusing that it worked just as well in the sim.

Page 356 is the one that does it for me.

Overloaded with dead and injured and dragging the skids through the undergrowth to get to the edge of a hill, then using the slope to build up speed to get a take off, resembles this mission.

I have flown the Mt. Elbrus Rescue mission several times. It certainly is tricky, especially when you return for the 2nd Group of survivors.

1) It is very important to take on only as much fuel as is recommended (I forget if it's 10% or 20% .. something like that).

2) When I land on either flight, I point the nose downhill.

3) Immediately before trying to lift offI have the Emergency Governor switch mapped to my collective and activate it.

4) Co-Pilot turns Emerg. Gov. OFF ; You may have to turn it back on for another minute as you are skipping along the icing slope but make sure you don't over-rev and make sure to turn Emerg. Gov OFF the second you are over the first ledge.

The rest of the mission is "all downhill through the fog". Watch those wires !!
