Vlerkies Posted October 26, 2016 Posted October 26, 2016 (edited) Hi Guys Sorry I have tried to look and make head or tail of this but after being away for a while and a new build I have in my DCS instal folder on a seperate SSD the following DCS main folder with 1.5 DCS Open Beta folder resides in there also with the same build as the main folder? DCS Open Alpha in the same main folder with DCS 2. All versions are consistent with the same build as currently displayed on the update page Latest stable version is 1.5.4.57288.170 Current openbeta is 1.5.4.57288.170 Current openalpha is 2.0.3.57442.107 http://updates.digitalcombatsimulator.com/ So my question is regarding the main folder (stable version) and the Open Beta instal folder. Are they both still necessary for any tangible reason (different engines or something?) Can one of them be simply deleted and consigned to the recycle bin or uninstalled to save HD space. DCS folder now at 110gb on a 250gb ssd, with some other games its getting pretty snug in there. I understand from reading that eventual goal is for the 1.5 and 2 will be merged which is great and understand why we have the 2 versions, its just the stable/beta instal I am querying. Thank you in advance. Pocket Sized Posted October 26, 2016 Posted October 26, 2016 I'd say to delete the open beta. It is only ahead of the release version if there's a patch they aren't sure about which means it is usually buggy after an update. 1 DCS modules are built up to a spec, not down to a schedule. In order to utilize a system to your advantage, you must know how it works.
kobeshow Posted October 26, 2016 Posted October 26, 2016 I'd say remove stable, so people don't get confused by the word. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] "DCS World is the main public build, it has nothing to do with being stable" -Bignewy
Yurgon Posted October 26, 2016 Posted October 26, 2016 I'd say to delete the open beta. Agreed. When the 1.5 Open Beta was first released, it was a massive step ahead of 1.2. By now, it's typically no more ahead than one week and it may be (more) buggy. Most of the time it's exactly the same version as stable anyway. Players who don't need to test the latest and greatest don't need it. Plus, we can use the DCS Updater to switch between any version. Going from 1.5 stable to Open Beta (or back) is a simple command line and shouldn't take long. Some of my friends do that on our weekly flights just prior to us joining a server. dburne Posted October 26, 2016 Posted October 26, 2016 I would agree and say if space needed go ahead and get rid of the 1.5 Open Beta as well, here in a couple months or so it is all going to be merged into a unified 2.5 version anyway. The 1.5 Open Beta and 1.5 Stable have been running parallel to each other for several weeks now. I would think there probably won't be too many more updates to these versions prior to the merge into 2.5. Only thing to think about though, which version will get updated to 2.5... cichlidfan Posted October 26, 2016 Posted October 26, 2016 Only thing to think about though, which version will get updated to 2.5... My bet is neither. I am expecting a whole new installer for v2.5. Phantom453 Posted October 27, 2016 Posted October 27, 2016 My bet is neither. I am expecting a whole new installer for v2.5. Interesting. Good point! I assumed that 1.5.XX and 1.5.xx OB would have updated to 2.5/ & 2.5 OB and copied across what files it could from 2.0.XX However, with the new technologies & features anticipated in 2.5, as well as the whole Caucasus map update, perhaps it would make more sense for a fresh 2.5 install (hopefully copying rather than downloading any usable files/ modules from the older installs etc.? You know what they say about assuming :smilewink:
Vlerkies Posted October 27, 2016 Author Posted October 27, 2016 Hi Folks Thank you all very much for your input. I will remove the files of the OB and save them on another storage drive with lots more space and just keep the stable and Nevada going for now. Sryan Posted October 27, 2016 Posted October 27, 2016 Hey Vlerkies, you could save yourself that external space. Like Yurgon stated it is pretty to easy to transmogrify your stable version into the beta version and back. Check my F-15C guide
