Sometimes when I'm doing some spirited flying I'll get the gimbal roll notice on my TGP. I know what this means, it means my TGP has it's knickers in a twist. Normally I just jam the stick to once side and do the only "I'm not fooling around right now" alieron roll I ever do. But I'm wondering is there a more elegant way of unwinding my TGP? Or do I get to do barrel rolls knowing I have the backing of the airforce and a plethora of engineers?

You should never have to 'jam the stick'or do any other crazy move to fix that. It is my understanding it simply cannot track where you want it due to the orientation of the aircraft. Mine is always on my right wing. So right wing toward target and I can track no problem.

Sometimes I just bore sight the TGP which will take it out of GIMBAL.

Sorry sir, I gently coax the stick to one side.

Mine has a habit of doing this while it's also SPI Generator. When I boresight it, the SPI is automatically reverted back to STPT, and the target I'd been searching for for half an eternity is back in hiding and I have to search it all over again.

If I don't have a waypoint on my target, I like to drop a markpoint as soon as my TGP spots something valuable. Then, if it can't keep tracking the target because of gimbal roll limits, I can boresight the TGP, make sure the corresponding markpoint is my steerpoint, and then slave TGP to steerpoint.

When tracking moving targets, I like to drop a markpoint every couple of minutes so I don't have to follow a road for ages with the TGP.

But the best thing really is to look out the window and maintain SA. If I know where my targets are down on the ground, it should be pretty easy to get the TGP on them in no time. Relying solely on the TGP tends to be bad for SA. ;)

That's true, I'm addicted to mark points I use them all the time.

I use just TAD as it gives best situational awareness where TGP is pointing, where enemy is and when I want to point TGP.

If the target area is in front, then HUD is easiest way to aim TGP but any other direction TAD is best. Here is no need for playing with TGP or even mark points when knowing the map.

Mark points are great when having multiple target areas that don't change so then those can be switched quickly as needed. TAD is just so easy and powerful to do all planning.

Hope I´m not disturbing the discussion, but HOW do I bring back the TGP to boresight ?

Often being puzzled by gimbal limits.

China hat aft short while TGP is SOI - C should be the default key binding for that.

Or you can just set the TGP to standby and then back to A2G mode. That boresights it too.

According to an actual A-10C flight manual I found online the 'corrective action' is as follows;

"Run IBIT via STAT page todetermine if fault is intermittent.Cycle TGP power."

Right, but a gimbal limit or airframe/ordnance obstructing the lens isn't a fault. It's just that you need to modify your plane of motion so it has visibility again. Often raising or lowering a wing is enough to do it, provided you're not getting wild, and if so, find it and set a markpoint as discussed earlier in the thread.
