Is there a want for a video series describing how to mod in dcs?

Considering doing it because I had a lot of trouble at the start of making mods and if I had something like this it would have probably been a far more fluid experience for me.

If so, would anyone here be willing to contribute information to something you're good at? Be it animation, coding and or sound design etc (I'm no pro at any of these but i can do them by myself if needs be.)

If I had to imagine what it would be like think of the Basic guide to DCS modding but in a video series and updated techniques. I would also include some stuff on importing and exporting from blender as I know a lot of people - including myself i might add, are far more used to the fluid key based structure of blender.

Absolutely any help we can get to understand how this stuff all works is much needed it would allow fans to create better objects. I for one have 3 ships just waiting to be made all free for mod use....Along with a few other static that Id love to put in the game....

lua 'modding' it seems starts out with simply punching in different values and then see if anything noticeable happens :)

by painstaking trial-and-error

| VR goggles | Autopilot panel | Headtracker | TM HOTAS | G920 HOTAS | MS FFB 2 | Throttle Quadrants | 8600K | GTX 1080 | 64GB RAM| Win 10 x64 | Voicerecognition | 50" UHD TV monitor | 40" 1080p TV monitor | 2x 24" 1080p side monitors | 24" 1080p touchscreen |

Well, it would be more based around jets (not a huge fan of props personally but i might be able to help with some stuff) not ships but I have personally imported ships and a challenger 2 tank with animations. But this will definitely be included under (basic importing and adding ai)

When you say "mod", what actually do you mean because there are several very complex disciplines that might come under that banner?

By mod i mean creating a 3D model, animating and texturing it (texturing will be done off camera as it will take a long time) adding a SFM and an SSM (so you can use anims) basic lua functions and calls. Then adding a cockpit and how to implement it correctly etc. and that would be it. nothing hugely advanced - think the basic modding guide (the pdf) but in video format with some different newer techniques.

In the How to sections are a few examples and a lot of stuff to discover, here a start: https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=116901

This is what i was going to base it off but with newer techniques (also including blender importing.)

Can confirm testing the SR-71 SFM is a huge kick in the balls for the thrust and lift.

So you mean you want to import your own 3D models?

If there is a .EDM exporter for blender, it will maybe work

But AFAIK, the .EDM exporter, which is required to turn 3D models to the .EDM format is only available for 3DS MAX

There isn't an EDM exporter for blender only for 3DS max. But i was going to teach people to import into max because it can actually be quite arduous sometimes (errors etc). And i'm not too sure you know what im asking in general. What I mean is I would be willing to make a video series covering all of this if people would be interested.

Seems like a lot of work based on what you said. There's modelling in two apps, configuring the exporter (theres a video for that out there thats worth using) texturing and creating the DDS then creating the mod structure and referencing it, which is pretty easy as you can copy the structure of others out there. Will you do anything on animations and how to reference those in 3DS? I mean, I think this is hugely worthwhile for amateur modders, but can't help thinking its a tough one to do. Yes anyway though :)

If you could show me how to import say a static object like a house with custom textures so that it appeared as a mod correctly scaled and even left out the parts where you use 3DS to make it and left out how to do the textures, but got the entire thing start to finsh I'd be really greatful. I folloed one before and I had issues with textures and scaling and never got it working. The bonus part would come with a plane with flaps and undercarriage and other moving parts, this sounds hard. And then again, a cockpit creation and putting it into another basic plane like a Civvy plane, possibly a series on its own.

If you got the first one, I'd help testing the procedure and do the videos for you and give them or some other type of help. The rest I'd be astonished and overjoyed :) Pretty sure there's many people out there who woudl appreciate it but wouldnt ever see this post.

Id be a subscriber as well ;)

haha, subscribers don't really bother me but its nice to the see sentiment behind it. I guess I can start getting setup to make a video about how to mod DCS containing everything you will need from programs to plugins etc. Then I will create some more videos on importing and exporting etc animations and lua

Modding in DCS is not really good for a video series. The beginners guide is what you need, the problem is that its basically dead now and has no been updated in like 6 months to a year?

At this point the community A4E will actually be a better learning tool for modders(at least if you want to make SFM aircraft) than anything else that is out right now. My own personal project is on hold until that is out because it has a lot of the same or similar systems to what I want to do and I can use the examples they have created to create another aircraft.

The community A4E is what i have learnt a lot of the systems based code from, though I don't have a lot of time I look to get at least the 'basics' video done for within 3-4 days *thanks to gos for everything A-4E he has been a great help on discord and in general*

Would there be interest in a tutorial on cockpit swapping?

Say change the cockpit from a F-15 to SU -27?

Also the same info only using the P51D and A10C?

This would be useful to anyone creating a mod.

If so I will put together a text file with this info.

I have been teaching myself modding for about a year by studying others work and by experimentation. It is only in the past 2 months that it all began to "click".

I would be happy to share my knowledge with others.

Hawkeye

"Yeah, and though I work in the valley of Death, I will fear no Evil. For where there is one, there is always three. I preparest my aircraft to receive the Iron that will be delivered in the presence of my enemies. Thy ALCM and JDAM they comfort me. Power was given unto the aircrew to make peace upon the world by way of the sword. And when the call went out, Behold the "Sword of Stealth". And his name was Death. And Hell followed him. For the day of wrath has come and no mercy shall be given."

This kind of thing?

The first episode would kind of be like that, but also including notepad++ and texture editing programs that you can use.
