JohnathanWinters Posted April 30, 2017 Posted April 30, 2017 Is there any drawback to flying with your canopy off? I like hearing the engine and the bette view :3
javelina1 Posted April 30, 2017 Posted April 30, 2017 With a handle like that, this has gotta be tongue in cheek. :-) MSI MAG Z790 Carbon, i9-13900k, NH-D15 cooler, 64 GB CL40 6000mhz RAM, MSI RTX4090, Yamaha 5.1 A/V Receiver, 4x 2TB Samsung 980 Pro NVMe, 1x 2TB Samsung 870 EVO SSD, Win 11 Pro, TM Warthog, Virpil WarBRD, MFG Crosswinds, 43" Samsung 4K TV, 21.5 Acer VT touchscreen, TrackIR, Varjo Aero, Wheel Stand Pro Super Warthog, Phanteks Enthoo Pro2 Full Tower Case, Seasonic GX-1200 ATX3 PSU, PointCTRL, Buttkicker 2, K-51 Helicopter Collective Control
Dino Might Posted April 30, 2017 Posted April 30, 2017 Increased drag. Not sure if pilot will pass out/die from exposure if you go rocket man up to 50000 ft without a canopy.
VZ_342 Posted April 30, 2017 Posted April 30, 2017 Go fly any WWI aeroplane, they don't have modern accessories like the canopy...:)
Kippy Posted April 30, 2017 Posted April 30, 2017 If you want to throw realism out with the canopy, then the only real downside is hypoxia at higher altitudes. I think it begins around 18,000 feet IIRC. I too happen to like convertibles, just not ones that fly. 163rd vFS Discord Soaring With the Snakes, Fangs Out!
javelina1 Posted April 30, 2017 Posted April 30, 2017 OP, loving your handle! Gawd this brings back memories!!!! But back on topic. Yes, keep your canopy for anything WWII and above! :-) MSI MAG Z790 Carbon, i9-13900k, NH-D15 cooler, 64 GB CL40 6000mhz RAM, MSI RTX4090, Yamaha 5.1 A/V Receiver, 4x 2TB Samsung 980 Pro NVMe, 1x 2TB Samsung 870 EVO SSD, Win 11 Pro, TM Warthog, Virpil WarBRD, MFG Crosswinds, 43" Samsung 4K TV, 21.5 Acer VT touchscreen, TrackIR, Varjo Aero, Wheel Stand Pro Super Warthog, Phanteks Enthoo Pro2 Full Tower Case, Seasonic GX-1200 ATX3 PSU, PointCTRL, Buttkicker 2, K-51 Helicopter Collective Control
cichlidfan Posted April 30, 2017 Posted April 30, 2017 I too happen to like convertibles, just not ones that fly. The WWI convertibles that fly can be fun and the open top can be quite handy if you need to pull in close and use your sidearm. 1 ASUS ROG Maximus VIII Hero, i7-6700K, Noctua NH-D14 Cooler, Crucial 32GB DDR4 2133, Samsung 950 Pro NVMe 256GB, Samsung EVO 250GB & 500GB SSD, 2TB Caviar Black, Zotac GTX 1080 AMP! BSS_Sniper Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 Go fly any WWI aeroplane, they don't have modern accessories like the canopy...:) Yeah and they aren't flying at altitudes that require pressurization either. To the OP, I'm not sure why you wouldn't want the canopy given this is a sim. It needs to be there to pressurize the cockpit. Below that it's after a set amount of time. I9 9900k @ 5ghz water cooled, 32gb ram, GTX 2080ti, 1tb M.2, 2tb hdd, 1000 watt psu TrackIR 5, TM Warthog Stick and Throttle, CH Pedals

I've tested hypoxia a few times in DCS and that's just when I started to observe significant effects after a relatively short period of time. 163rd vFS Discord Soaring With the Snakes, Fangs Out!
Hummingbird Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 Besides hypoxia and the extreme cold associated with high alt flight, there's the extra turbulence and therefore drag generated if you break up the bundary layer of the airstream over the cockpit. Futhermore modern canopies are mostly clear plastics, thus you'd gain little in terms of extra visibility by punching it off.
JohnathanWinters Posted May 1, 2017 Author Posted May 1, 2017 Glad to hear that the game simulates canopy effects on the plane and pilot. Guess I'll have to keep the convertible parked for mountain flight days. as for the visibility I Only mean that thic bar ontop of the hud, minor change =P
MikeMikeJuliet Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 Glad to hear that the game simulates canopy effects on the plane and pilot. Guess I'll have to keep the convertible parked for mountain flight days. as for the visibility I Only mean that thic bar ontop of the hud, minor change =P We gotta remember that such DISadvantages are part of any aircraft as much as advantages in turn radius, speed or armament. I know this is chit-chat and more akin to lighthearted babble than a super serious thread... but still, I wonder why some folks want to remove all the obstacles from the cockpit (and smudges from the canopy)... such problems are a part of the aircraft one chooses to fly. A cockpit with all its flaws is just as much a part of the aircraft as any other aspect. You can have the ultimate super fighter on your hands, but it doesn”t fare well if you can't see out of it. Something I feel couch-professors and know-it-alls forget That said, I do enjoy taxiing around with the canopy open :D DCS Finland | SF squadron
Pocket Sized Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 Story time! Back when the Eagle was still somewhat new, they kept getting reports of canpoies coming off in flight. None of these accidents were fatal. In fact, the airplane was landed just fine. The pilots said it was quite comfortable if they stayed below 300 kts. "I felt like I could have worn a scarf and let it flap in the wind as I came down on final approach" So the USAF grabbed some poor sod and made him take off without a canopy installed on the aircraft. Thus, the "Bald Eagle" test flight program was born. DCS modules are built up to a spec, not down to a schedule. In order to utilize a system to your advantage, you must know how it works.
