I was looking at the map area for NTTR and it struck me that there was an enormous missed opportunity based on the map size and location.

With the F-14, F/A-18, and the AV-8 on the horizon, would it be in the cards to have the map area extended further south ~150-180km? This would be a roughly 150,000km2 addition but it would add a ton of depth to the map by including all the major Navy/Marine Corps stomping grounds in the southwestern U.S.

1) NAS/MCAS Miramar

Current home of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing (3d MAW) and former home of NSAWC and TOPGUN, "Fightertown USA." Hornets and Tomcats (and dare I say Phantoms?) are right at home for any modern or historical training missions. Current home of Marine Aircraft Group 11 (MAG-11).

  • VMFA-232 Red Devils (F/A-18C)
  • VMFA-314 Black Knights (F/A-18C)
  • VMFA-323 Death Rattlers (F/A-18C)
  • VMFAT-101 Sharpshooters (F/A-18C Training Squadron)

2) MCAS Yuma

The busiest Marine Corps air station and fielding excellent year-round flying conditions, it is surrounded by premier air-to-ground training ranges (Chocolate Mountains, Barry Goldwater, and Yuma Proving Grounds) that it puts to good use during the Weapons and Tactics Instructor (WTI) course: the Marine Corps' top-level weapons school and counterpart to TOPGUN and WIC. Twice a year, thousands of Marines and a handful of joint and coalition partners travel to Yuma to conduct the largest combined arms exercise in the world to include Battalion-level helicopter air assaults, high-tempo close air support, self-escort strikes to Nellis AFB, and even foreign humanitarian assistance and embassy evacuation exercises. Current home of MAG-13.

  • VMA-214 Blacksheep (AV-8B)
  • VMA-311 Tomcats (AV-8B)
  • VMA-211 Wake Island Avengers (AV-8B) (now VMFA-211 (F-35B))
  • VMA-513 Flying Nightmares (AV-8B) (now decommissioned)
  • MAWTS-1
  • VMX-1
  • VMFT-401 Snipers (F-5N) Adversaries

3) NAF El Centro

Winter home of the Blue Angels and frequent training stop for VMFAT-101.

4) MCAS Camp Pendleton

Major west coast Marine Corps infantry base and home of MAG-39.

  • HMLA-169 Vipers (AH-1W/Z, UH-1N/Y)
  • HMLA-267 Stingers (AH-1W/Z, UH-1N/Y)
  • HMLA-369 Gunslingers (AH-1W/Z, UH-1N/Y)
  • HMLA-469 Vengeance (AH-1W/Z, UH-1N/Y)
  • HMLAT-303 Atlas (AH-1Z, UH-1Y Training Squadron)

5) MCAS El Toro

Attacked and destroyed during the War of 1996.

6-9) Naval Base San Diego / NAB Coronado / NAS North Island / Pacific Ocean

One of the largest naval bases and shore commands in the world, and home to many carriers and amphibious vessels. More ocean than you can shake a stick at for CVN and LHA/LHD operations.

With so many current and upcoming modules that have historically called this area home, it should be a natural addition. Is this something that might be a possibility, or are we stuck flying Marine and Navy jets out of an Air Force base? ;)

That's a shame then, considering so much stuff happens just outside the southern map boundary and how much utility players and mission/campaign-makers could get out of it.

I know it's no small feat to add swaths of terrain and airports, but having a training campaign for Hornets and Harriers on their home turf, providing an actual sandbox where they fly together, and having an ideal area to continue to develop DCS: Combined Arms might be the tipping point for many people hesitant to purchase the NTTR module but who are excited about these other aircraft and possibilities.

It seems to me that for naval jets it´s better if ED concentrates efforts on finishing the Strait of Hormuz map, before considering expanding Nevada.

Wags made a comment here about adding locations to NTTR, it is not likely to happen sorry

While something we had hoped to do, and did some initial planning on, it's no longer in our plans. Hence, it was never listed on the product page.

We already added 13 new civilian and military airbases as a free update.

As Sith said, aside from bug fixes (like the clip map issue) and updating the map to take advantage of new engine tech, the map is complete.

Thanks

This is where I become torn with maps being closed to editing.

We get that they take time, resources, and money. Which is generated by sales.

Yet it would be really nice if they were an object that could be expanded upon by the community.

Absolutely right. We need a new modern conflict map before expanding a non conflict one. Besides as Wags said the map is complete with no plans for future expansion.

Both f18 and f14 will be more enjoyed if we could use carriers, otherwise itll be wierd using them in the black sea map.

The F-14 is coming with its own Theatre and a Carrier.

Really? Nice! I did not know that, is it confirmed? What theatre is it?

Thanks for the update, BIGNEWY.

That's really unfortunate. There's always some suspension of disbelief doing training missions in the combat theater and NTTR is definitely not the ideal place for it once the Red Flag novelty has worn off.

What are the chances or even feasibility that a 3rd party could add areas and assets to existing terrain modules?

Absolutely right. We need a new modern conflict map before expanding a non conflict one.

SW U.S. could be used as a conflict map though with the bases laid out like they are.

The Weapons and Tactics Instructor course is an example of a real-world (notional) conflict between a threat nation to the north (Capital of Las Vegas) encroaching on an allied nation to the south (Capital of San Diego), with sea-to-shore operations and ground combat operations throughout the area. And it would be ready-built for carrier operations and anything else, since there is plenty of ocean and the area is littered with LHA/LHD training pads at outlying auxiliary airfields.

That has not been revealed yet. But Cobra at Leatherneck/Heatblur described it as "Very oceany. Very cold".

-Col. Russ Everts opinion on surface-to-air missiles: "It makes you feel a little better if it's coming for one of your buddies. However, if it's coming for you, it doesn't make you feel too good, but it does rearrange your priorities."
