Very weird issue with extreme texture banding in both 1.5 and 2.1

Recommended Posts

Hi, decided to post this here as this seem to affect to both 1.5 and 2.1 versions...

For some reason, I have been experiencing, since the last coupe of updates in both 1.5 and 2.1, a very weird issue which makes the planes to look like an extreme "moire effect" or something like that is covering the whole plane...I took some screens:

What you see there is not an effect of the screen nor the monitor, is actually how it looks in game.

It can get really extreme as you get farder to the plane but there is a point where the effect just goes away suddenly (I think at the same time the self shadowing dissapears so maybe related to shadows):

Extreme:

Nothing just after a bit more far away:

Also in 2.1:

Also found this in a X-Stounds' screen :

Its worse in 1.5 version and the way I found to make it happen is by zooming a lot to the plane at quite far distance, then decrease a bit zooming and bang, it happens...surprisingly, when doing alt+tab and then alt+tab again to the game it goes away (at least some times) but after doing zoom again it comes back. I have no idea what could be causing this. My 1.5 version is totally vanilla (no mods, editing nor anything like that btw).

Anyone else experiencing this?

Thanks!!

Take a look at my MODS here

Seems like "shadow acne" to me...might be wrong though.

Try disabling dynamic shadows and see it it goes away; if it does, it's shadow acne, and might be mitigated by using a bigger shadow map. It will probably be there, but won't be as noticeable.

Just my 2 cents.

Hello,

Thanks for looking into this matter!

Just tested in latest 1.5.7, this is still there. I attach my options.lua

How to replicate (Su-33, Mirage, F-15C do present the banding with the following steps)

  • Launch instant mission
  • F2 external view,
  • Press external Zoom in to the maximum
  • Roll back on mouse to see full aircraft.

NB: the banding appears for external zoom in at a high level, not only to the max , and is not visible at minimum distance (ie rolling mouse)

NB2: The good news: this does not appear to happen on 2.1

In motion:

Also my options.lua is attached. (My anisotropic filtering is forced through NVidial control panel, coz in game setting has no effect whatsoever for me...)

Also+ this footage is from couple of patches ago, and I might have changed some graphics settings since then, but I was able to reproduce the bug with my current settings anyway.

Thanks

Had a look using your options, still not seeing it. I am using 3 screens so it maybe the reason.

I will point ED this way in the morning.

BIGNEWY you need to move your view out from the aircraft a bit then press rctrl + * to narrow FOV zoom in and then you should see the bug, note this only affects medium and high shadow setting.

P.S this is on an AMD card so it's not bug specific to nvidia, also i have all AA and AF settings set to default in my control panel.

Thanks Mustang, just tried as described, but still not seeing it. I will ask others to try from the testers
