bC3660 Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 I just bought a new computer ( still hasn't arrived yet). Inspiron 5680 Intel® Core™ i7 8700 (6-Core/12-Thread, 12MB Cache, up to 4.6GHz with Intel® Turbo Boost Technology) NVIDIA GTX 1060 3GB 128GB M.2 SATA SSD + 2TB SATA 7200 RPM HDD 16GB (2X8GB) 2400Mhz DDR4 Memory, up to 64GB Windows 10 Home (64bit) English Says the 128GB SSD is the boot drive. My question is can I or should I put DCS on that drive too?
Rudel_chw Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 Says the 128GB SSD is the boot drive. My question is can I or should I put DCS on that drive too? You shouldnt, as its too small for most DCS installs and you need space on it for Windows, temporary files, the swapfile, etc. For work: iMac mid-2010 of 27" - Core i7 870 - 6 GB DDR3 1333 MHz - ATI HD5670 - SSD 256 GB - HDD 2 TB - macOS High Sierra For Gaming: 34" Monitor - Ryzen 3600 - 32 GB DDR4 2400 - nVidia RTX2080 - SSD 1.25 TB - HDD 10 TB - Win10 Pro - TM HOTAS Cougar Mobile: iPad Pro 12.9" of 256 GB
Cibit Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 Yeah unfortunately the 2.5 install is @100Gb +/- shame you can't upgrade the m2 to 500Gb i5 8600k@5.2Ghz, Asus Prime A Z370, 32Gb DDR4 3000, GTX1080 SC, Oculus Rift CV1, Modded TM Warthog Modded X52 Collective, Jetseat, W10 Pro 64 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Adding JTAC Guide //My Vid's//229th AHB
cichlidfan Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 The 3GB VRAM is a bit shy of ideal as well. firmek Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 You will not have enough space on that drive. I was in the same situation - a 128 GB SDD with Windows only and the DCS would not fit on it. I got a 500 GB SDD for DCS. It was really worth it. DCS loads a lot of data, making upgrade from HDD to SDD a night to day difference. However, frankly speaking, if it's going to be a gaming PC if you still have a possibility I would change the i7 8700 to i5 and get a better GPU - 1070 at least and 1080 if possible. Steel Jaw Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 The secondary 2TB SATA will be plenty big for DCS so yes install. "You see, IronHand is my thing" My specs: W10 Pro, I5/11600K o/c to 4800 @1.32v, 64 GB 3200 XML RAM, Red Dragon 7800XT/16GB.
cichlidfan Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 The secondary 2TB SATA will be plenty big for DCS so yes install. I would purchase another SSD before putting DCS on a spinner. The next time you want an upgrade, you will only have to upgrade your graphics card, keep that in mind. All your other parts will age much more slowly than your graphics card, but your graphics card will be ready for an upgrade in a couple of years at most. It's already a little on the weak end but will work perfectly in 1920x1080. Read my DCS 2.5 Optimisation Guide (version 2.5.4): https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?p=3828073
bC3660 Posted February 21, 2018 Author Posted February 21, 2018 Thanks for the info! I plan on upgrading the video card next year. and will look into getting a larger SSD in the next few months.

BitMaster Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 Depending on how many modules and terrains you currently own and plan to purchase, it is rather unlikely that DCS will fit on any 128GB SSD once formatted and obeying the rule that it also needs some free space for trimming, like 80% used, 20% ALWAYS free. My own current install of Open beta is 87GB and I do not own Normandie, that is likely another 20-30GB, plus I am like 7 airplanes and choppers behind, add those plus the new Strait of Hormuz. Yes, a 250GB SSD will be needed soon if you own them all. Multiply that by 2,3 or 4 if you run multiple installs and branches. Keep that SSD for OS and get a 2nd one, 250GB or larger. I certainly would not buy smaller than 250GB for the reasons mentioned above. bC3660 Posted March 2, 2018 Author Posted March 2, 2018 Got the new rig yesterday afternoon. Only issues so far are video related. But I think its becouse I'm using a Samsung Smart HDTV and not a monitor. Compared to my last computer this one is BLAZING FAST! I have DCS on the 2TB Hard drive. Still takes a bit of time to load. Thats all for now. Will update this as I play more.
bC3660 Posted March 11, 2018 Author Posted March 11, 2018 Went and got a new monitor and the video issues went away. I just installed a 500GB WD SSD drive and formatted it. My question now is do I uninstall DCS and reinstall to the new SSD or Drag and Drop from the storage drive to the SSD?
hansangb Posted March 11, 2018 Posted March 11, 2018 Yes, you can do just that. And update any shortcuts to point to the new drive. hsb HW Spec in Spoiler --- i7-10700K Direct-To-Die/OC'ed to 5.1GHz, MSI Z490 MB, 32GB DDR4 3200MHz, EVGA 2080 Ti FTW3, NVMe+SSD, Win 10 x64 Pro, MFG, Warthog, TM MFDs, Komodo Huey set, Rverbe G1
