I5 2500k and gtx1070 enough for VR?

Recommended Posts

Hello guys,

I have something lately running through my head i hope you can help me with my purchase roadmap :)

So I have a fairly old system consisting on a i5 2500k @4.2ghz, 8gb of ddr3 ram, ssd and Gtx1070 (this was the last adquisition), but luckily for me since i upgraded my graphic card last year, the rig is holding pretty damn well with all my gaming and simming, including Dcs world OB 2.5 which i recently returned 2 months ago from a 2 years and half break. Everything runs smoothly even at high settings, provided that the mission has not 50+ units. At that point my CPU starts suffering.

So now that i'm back to simming i really really want to buy an oculus rift. The question now is: can my system handle it? Nothing fancy like 90fps, just playable to a good degree.

Also on my roadmap is getting the full system upgrade with an i7 8700k, 16gb of ddr4 and a good motherboard. Can i waut after the oculus rift? Or is betther getting that first and then going VR?

It would be so helpful if any of you with a similar system and the oculus could let me know his/her experience.

Thanks!

I ran with an i5 2500 @3.6ghz and a 1070 until late last year.

The answer is:

- 8Gb of ram will cause some issues (stutters). If you’re waiting for price drops on the kabylake, throw another 16gb inside. Note however that you’d be buying DDR3, which you wouldn’t be able to reuse with a kabylake

- I successfully ran DCS with my Rift and a 1070 for a year, though I did need to turn down some settings to retain a decent frame rate

System: 9700, 64GB DDR4, 2070S, NVME2, Rift S, Jetseat, Thrustmaster F18 grip, VPC T50 stick base and throttle, CH Throttle, MFG crosswinds, custom button box, Logitech G502 and Marble mouse.

Server: i5 2500@3.9Ghz, 1080, 24GB DDR3, SSD.

I tried 2500K @4.4Ghz + 16G RAM + 1080TI +SSD with occulus, frame rates in DCS not good enough for me

The Oculus website has a tool you can use to test your system for compatibility. It will show you the system's strong and weak points.

Click on the link under "To run the Rift compatibility check tool:" It's not highlighted.

Last time I check this tool, it doesn't count overclocked CPUs. My CPU is was the weak point, but I'm sure that is is much faster than newer stock CPUs which are listed as minimum.

On OP question: With my system I will hold my breath for Oculus until upgrade. Then maybe I can get second generation VR headsets.

I have i7-8700k @ 5.1Ghz + 32GB + 1080Ti (SLI not operational in DCS for VR) and framerate is not good enough (I have made now a five similar specs builds and in all it is just terrible below 30 FPS even all set to minimal). Compare that to 180-250 FPS I get in 4K with all maxed out and it tells the story of why VR is not so great for everyone.

i7-8700k, 32GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 2x 2080S SLI 8GB, Oculus Rift S.

i7-8700k, 16GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 1080Ti 11GB, 27" 4K, 65" HDR 4K.

!? Fri13, no way it can be so catastrophic with such HW !?

My fps is quasi a flat line at 45 (locked 45fps ASW on) with far from low settings (100%trees, AAx2, PD1.2, middle visib. and shadows, Def. Shad. on, etc....) even in MP (not counting the big freezes of several seconds)

A 8700k + 1080Ti is NOT the golden egg for VR. Years behind....years.

45 down low with co mpromises, 90 up high..

VR has immersion, far beyond what TiR5 can deliver.

Problem is not 1070 or 1080TI or not, problem is that dcs is not optimized good for VR, simply uses GPU badly. Can say names here but there is couple of sims that run great in VR, look least good as dcs or better :)

So just have to wait that ed fixes this more.

-edit- And before someone says something about " dcs makes calculations or is complex and so diffrent because reason xxx, just take Mig-29, empty clear map. Sit in, turn it off = now you have quite low cpu load. And still VR fps sucks , its just not done right yet.

yes, sure. DCS could be much better in VR if the devs had enough time at hand.

I am pretty sure they will tune this over time as VR grabs more attention and value.

Im sure too, hope that they get more time to fine tune VR performance :)

DCS has shown many times that they have a wonderful team of developers capable of delivering superb content and quality, both on modules, graphics and content.

The only down side is being a relatively small company with limited resources, and this lead to long times for new implementations, but that is the price we need to pay for being such a niche community. But if you look what we have now since the first lock-on back in 2005 it was? It is superb what they have accomplished. I cant imagine what will it be like when they start implementing dybamic campaign, f18, better atc, etc
