Do you think I will see much improvement in FPS with current setup My fps has taken a hit over the pass two updated's, where I was averaging 45 to 55 in any map area. Now it's about 10 fps less. I don't want to turn down setting, most are maxed.

 

I have tried overclocking to max numbers but fps remain the same. Don't know what that's about.

 

Here is my current hardware.

 

Intel core i7 4790 cpu 4.00 to 4.7

 

16 GB memory DDR3 1400 to 1600

 

GTX 980 4GB

 

49" TV 60hz 1920x1080 desktop and in sim

 

Motherboard will take the 1080ti

 

If anyone see's bottle neck in current setup please point out.

 

The only other sim's I dabble in is FSX and Project Cars. Pcar no problems at all, and FSX not to concerned about.

This might not help but hardware canunk says no differences in vdo rendering.

I don't know if things have changed with the DCS engine but I believe DCS prefers CPU power.

Not sure where you got the idea that DCS prefers CPU power.. GPU has always been the most important thing for DCS and going from a 980 to a 1080 TI will most certainly provide better performance.. MUCH better performance

I recall reading many topics on DCS likes high CPU Mhz. Might not be true with 2.0 on up?

Yes you will see better performance from GPU upgrade especially now with deffered shading always on and will also be beneficial for VR,

 

 

Similar CPU clock this way and upgraded from 980ti to 1080ti just for DCS and VR.

 

Other thing to consider is there could a new graphics card from NVIDIA released soon maybe worth considering.

I have 1080TI and have noticed guys with 980Ti complaining that DCS is no longer playable with defered shading. On my computer using 1080 Ti I can use defered shading with as good or better performance than I used to, when defered shading was not an option. In short I think yes it does make a big difference. CPU though I quickly came to realize that an OC using i7-8770k does not really make much of a discernable difference, so I now don't bother...

Save money for a new system. DCS to perform has 4 pillars right now. The Mhz, the cores, GFX and LOTS of RAM. I mean LOTS.

 

But each pillar of performance has different influence. Once you hit the swettspot of available threads (7 for me) and enough RAM the only thing that will matter is a better GFX.

 

If you had an I7 6800 exacore I would say yeah get just the 1080Ti. At this point You need at least an AMD 2600X minimum or a Intel 8700K. If you can wait for 9000 series 8 core thatll give you more room for game growth (same for an AMD 2700X). Thats because quad cores are a no go anymore and this was a very recent change (like from last year to this year). You can expect the optimal specs to only increase as Vulkan API is implemented.

Yes you will see improvement. We have similar rigs, and I am running even VR with at least acceptable performance. I even went from 1080 to 1080Ti and saw a bump.

 

Depending on how much a hurry you might be in, with the upcoming release of the 1180 cards (rumored to be announced in Aug) , might be able to pick up a 1080 Ti a little cheaper.

I went from a 980 to a 1080ti and it is about TWICE the oomps :)

 

 

But I would wait till August and see what the 11?? can deliver or if prices drop for a 1080ti

I concur. Next generation Nvidia is rumoured to drop end of August / September, in which case you'll see a price drop for the 1080ti.

So you can pick it up cheaper or go all out and get the 1180

So, a couple things to add to this discussion.

 

CPU vs GPU - In the end this is a balancing act. CPU needs to be fast enough to send your packets to the card the second its ready to receive it. Otherwise known as bottle necking. For example, when I upgraded the first time from the GTX 970 to the 1070 using an OOOOLLLLDDD AMD FX-6300, the GPU ceased to be an issue and my CPU became one. My CPU could not deliver the information to the graphics card fast enough to keep up. Therefor, I wasn't getting the full benefit of the GTX 1070.

So, I upgraded and went to the i7-7700k. FPS jumped from about 45FPS to 150 depending on settings and server load.

RAM - 16GB is average. However, running DDR3 again creates a bit of a bottleneck and may require a bit more than DDR4 to achieve the same performance. DDR4 process information much faster and more efficiently than DDR3. Something, to think about. Although, as usual make sure your MOBO supports it if you consider changing to DDR4. Most, don't support both.

 

Finally, Do i upgrade? Do i buy Pascal (10 series) or wait for next Gen? I highly recommend watching this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=796S3oZmmcE. Jay is very well informed and works closely with many of the main line production companies. I have seen multiple reviewers saying the same thing. That NVidia are less likely to reduce the cost of the 10 series and rather raise the cost of the 11 series above until the 10 series are no longer in high supply.

A 980 to a 1080 or 1080ti you WILL SEE a major difference. As, long as the rest of your machine can keep up. Think of it as putting a Ferrari engine in a Honda. Just because the engine is fast, doesn't mean the rest of the vehicle can handle it.

 

Hope this helps. I know this can be a costly and nerve popping endeavor.
