Silver Dart Sims Posted July 21, 2019 Posted July 21, 2019 Rocket pod frangible fairings for the Zunis, LAU-61’s, and LAU-68’s, break off when first rocket is launched on pod. It would lower the drag index of said pod for example NATOPS performance manual tells me the drag index without the fairing is 12.0 and with a fairing is only 3.0. 1
Eldur Posted July 23, 2019 Posted July 23, 2019 I've asked for those a long time ago as well, but never got any official response to it. The reason I did was mainly that at least the LAU-3s on both the F-5E-3 and the AV-8B/NA do have those fairings already, but I actually don't know if the different drag is already modelled - TBH I think it's not, which might be the reason we still don't have them over here. For that to be possible, one weapon type would need to have different drag indexes for different states (fairings on, and to be exact, different values for every possible rocket count from zero to max) to really get it real. I guess it's just not that complex yet.
GumidekCZ Posted July 18, 2022 Posted July 18, 2022 The fairings are part of the ZUNI/Rockets launchers and should bepresent in DCS. Doesnt relly matter if it was used or not for cost saving reasons. Fairings are desribed in almost every rocket lanucher article I found on web. Like here: https://www.tpub.com/aviord321/31.htm Without fairings, the drag of the launchers is HUGE with high negative performance impact on long or fast fights to/from target. "Launchers can be fitted with forward and aft frangible fairings (as required) depending on overall rocket length for airborne configuration. "The forward frangible fairing disintegrates on rocket impact and the rear fairing acts as a funnel to direct debris away from the launch aircraft."
AngelAtTheTomb Posted July 18, 2022 Posted July 18, 2022 It's very noticeable in one of the Cerberus North missions that has you hauling two assymetric rocket pods a few hundred miles. You have to lean on the trim switch for a good thirty seconds.
GumidekCZ Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 (edited) Question is, how it should look like in the end in mission editor: a) add one more line to arming window with rocket pods fitted with additional front+aft fairings - my preferred option b) clickable option in group special tab ( like HMCS/NWG is) Edited July 19, 2022 by GumidekCZ
ED Team BIGNEWY Posted June 9, 2024 ED Team Posted June 9, 2024 Hi, we would need to see evidence of the United States Navy / US Marine Corps F/A-18C in the 2002ish time frame using fairings. thank you Forum rules - DCS Crashing? ED Team BIGNEWY Posted June 10, 2024 ED Team Posted June 10, 2024 just some evidence, but we have to pick carefully where we use our resources so even if there was evidence it would remain a wish list item for the time being. thank you 1 Forum rules - DCS Crashing? N8AHbl4 Posted August 1, 2024 Posted August 1, 2024 well there is a video of legacy hornets with fairings on both LAU-61 and LAU-68, the video is from 2012 tho two timestamps: Спойлер Спойлер 5
Megalax Posted August 25, 2024 Posted August 25, 2024 The Pocket Guide NWP 3-22.5-FA18A/B/C/D PG (Rev. A) has the fairings as part of the weapons check on page 70-71. Megalax's Livery Studio My Liveries in the User Files I'll stick a maple leaf on anything...
ED Team BIGNEWY Posted August 25, 2024 ED Team Posted August 25, 2024 Hi Megalax, only USMC Hornet's carry rockets, and all images we've seen have no fairing. We need to see photo evidence before we budget time and resources. thank you Forum rules - DCS Crashing?
