Hi,

just checked today morning on amazon (.com) and the hp reverb is again in stock , new item sold and shipped by amazon .

This should be a good news as maybe Hp has figured out what the problem was and we have good chances these new units are working properly , this in addition to emails sent out by hp to those customers who have recently returned their headsets back to Hp which has provided dates for estimated shipping while before they only offered a refund.

Is there a certain model number to look for to determine if it's the new model?

Nope as far as I know, but the HP reverb was out of stock since a few days ago on mostly all stores , on the HP official store page the "normal" consumer version (non pro) has been removed, only pro version is shown now but as "out of stock" by the way.

Anyhow if you purchase it from amazon in case of problems you can send it back and you'll get another unit or money back.

Well, I went ahead and purchased it. Should get it by Friday. I hope it's the latest version.

I ordered from Amazon about 1 week ago and have concluded that my unit is a "rev1" - it suffers flickering that is heat induced. I am hoping that I can start an RMA process with HP and get a "rev2" replacement without much downtime in between. Now that I have seen the amazing visual quality inside the 'verb it will be hard to go back to the O I was using before.

I wonder what reverb's screen looks like compared to the rift or rift S

Myself personally and others have been told directly from HP and retailers it will be mid-August before the revised headsets (with at least different cables) are shipping. I am on my 2nd headset and this time from Best Buy because I have a 45 day return/refund window (end of August) as an Elite Plus member. I did it so I could use it but then get it replaced as the new ones come out and hopefully they fix all of the problems. I want the new one to come from Best Buy too for the same long refund period just in case. The ones being sold now I was told from HP Tech support directly are getting a much more intense level of testing but are still the Gen 1 headsets. That may catch most but not all of the problems (the heating up flickering over time is tougher to catch). My 1st Pro Reverb did not show any problems until about 20 hours of use. I have spoken to HP Tech support about eight times on the Reverb.

My second one has not shown any issues in about 16 hours of use so far. The first one was a Pro version and the 2nd one is a consumer Standard version. I found out that currently SteamVR handles the two differently in the Video Resolution setting. I suspect that is a bug they need to correct based on the headset labels in Windows which are different.

All of this aside I tested both the Rift S and the Valve Index on DCS to see if I wanted to consider them and neither of those come close to the Reverb on clarity. I had and still have the opportunity to switch to one of those. For me I can't go back to lower clarity even with a tiny bit more FOV on the Index. Nothing beats the much higher native resolution of the Reverb. If Acer releases the Ojo ConceptD VR headset (also 2160 x 2160) on the consumer side as it now has (I spoke to Acer USA as well) on the commercial side it might compete with the Reverb.

Secoda - So will you exchange yours even if no issues arise? Should I seal my new Reverb in a insulated box while it runs for hours to proof it?

Can anyone tell me the "apparent" focal distance for eyeglass matching?

I heard from a little bird that they will not be released here in Australia until October, but hey that's the first that I've ever heard that they might so it's a start.

Yes on replacing it. Otherwise, if I wait beyond the 45 days it becomes a warranty repair issue with HP if something shows up which is ok but you may get a Gen 1 refurbished unit at that point as the fix plus you could be without the headset for a few weeks.

Well moving the cable around can cause some issues too so just leaving it on is really testing mainly the heating up issue. It still could be the cable causing both I read. Some got the right lens flicker to start by playing with the connector between the cables. I heard that HP really turned up the heat internally on fixing them properly given all of the bad press. I think they would have been better off like Acer to give the first ones just to the commercial side when they could more easily be recalled if problems developed.

That's strange. I actually read a review from Australia early a few months ago.

Not saying I won't have issues, so bear this mind, but I did get my consumer version and I haven't had any issues yet.

(this was ordered from Amazon last week)

Couple of things:

1. I immediately did the 'cable tie mod' - as well as taped the connector so it wouldn't move - I can sorta see why this is an issue because the cable is quite heavy compared to previous VR units. (I sit the whole time, but if I was to play a VR gaming standing up, etc.... I'd probably recommend some sort of 'belt' or something to help relieve any pressure there.)

2. I did put a small fan to help - I do notice the units gets warm

3. I do have a new system, new motherboard, new power supply - so I should check my mobo but I don't think I have any 'power' issues.

I suggest guys getting new Reverbs don't mess with the cable by putting bends or loops in it to zip tie it to the head strap. Its a stiff cable and may not like being bent in sharp curves. The more I think about it after I RMA mine back, bending the cable may have damage it more and made it worse. Just let it hand down right off the bat.

Interesting, so what you're saying is maybe the cable isn't internally stress relieved and could maybe get damaged by bending it too tightly?

Its just a theory, my issue was I had to keep the cable complexity straight for the displays to power up but I do remember the first time I turned the HMD on, it powered up normally. I never put it on my head but I shut it down after about 30 seconds and did the mod right away thinking I was just going to be proactive but thinking about it now, it may have been my downfall where I caused more problem unintentionally. So I suggest you guys don't mess with the cable unless you have issues right off the bat with the quick connector plug being loose and definitely don't put any bends in the cable what so ever.

Cool, thanks for the info. I was considering using some large shrink wrap tubing over the connector, as I don't have any need to disconnect it at the headset... but only if it's an issue.

If there is any coaxial wiring in the cable, extreme bends, combined with heat (and the connector does get warm) could possibly cause the center conductor to migrate through the dieelectric into the shielding. I'd stay away from putting any bends in the cable.
