WelshZeCorgi Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 Anyone have success in the Harrier online? Flew all day in the Sidewinder server, but cannot get within 5 miles of my target before getting killed by F14s
Nealius Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 Taking a ground-pounder on a PvP server is a recipe for disaster without coordinated human A2A escort or CAP. PvE would be a much better fit.
Oceandar Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 I agree. For the Harrier to survive you need fighters cover. Ask friends to play role as CAP's and make good coordination also one of the keys to success. Mastering others is strength. Mastering yourself is true power. - Lao Tze
arturojgt Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 As a AV8B enthusiast the above statement is totally true, you need an strong CAP. Dream Commodore 64C, 1530 datasette, 1541 floppy disk drive, DCS cartridge, competition pro joystick, 14” Tv with VCR. Arturo "Chaco" Gonzalez Thomas
Captain Orso Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 ...or you need to avoid the enemy. I've been playing a lot of Georgia At War. There is very little AG-A2A coordination. In fact, at any given time, you can count on at least half the F-14's and FA-18's to be doing your ground-pounding mission, instead of doing CAP. I've been tempted to go out with just 4 sidewinders and two wing tank because the jackasses just won't do their jobs. That being said, depending on when it is in the campaign, there can be a lot of AG work far from the areas frequented by enemy fighters. Having 1 sidewinders on a wingtip for just-in-case is however almost mandatory... oh, and always monitor the AWACS channel. When you hit the wrong button on take-off System Specs. Harlikwin Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 I dunno, its usually not so bad on GAW. I've even flow CAP for helos using the harrier before from a FARP. AI is usually stupid enough for me to be able to kill em before they kill me. On a PVP server though, the harrier would be among my last choices. The only pro-tip I would offer is to stay low and try to use terrain masking as much as possible. New hotness: I7 9700k 4.8ghz, 32gb ddr4, 2080ti, :joystick: TM Warthog. Nealius Posted August 6, 2019 Posted August 6, 2019 GAW is PvE, which is perfectly suitable for the Harrier. OP was talking about PvP.

Mecrutio Posted August 7, 2019 Posted August 7, 2019 I tend to avoid the opposition radar with ground masking. Figure out your target and it's location. Decide on a single strike load out. (You're only getting one shot at it) Figure out fuel. Look at the map and find a good route thru valleys. Enter in your waypoints thru these valleys. During ingress, keep the RWR EMPTY!! Any hits for any length of time procures an opposition AWACS call. Egress back thru valleys. HP should be a waypoint, just steer kinda to it until out of the valleys and within HP SAM coverage. You can do it. Prepare to die a lot. But you can do it, the reward is worth the risk. Practice offline. The Harrier is a straight PIG with a full load out and fuel. Snakeyes + DMT are my choice. Mohamengina Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 I've tried 3 times this week to do the side missions on the growling sidewinder (pvp) server and each time I've been shot down before I even got close to the targets. This is even when I'm flying low to the ground and trying to avoid detection.
Captain Orso Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 Yeah, the idea that you can evade radar that's not 30+ miles away is ... fanciful, unless you are in a deep valley with zero LOS. There is no, nor will there ever be a 100% solution to enemy cap other than friendly cap. When you hit the wrong button on take-off System Specs. Not so much for the god's eye view AWACS has, or enemy CAP. If you can see that bit of sky it can see you too. New hotness: I7 9700k 4.8ghz, 32gb ddr4, 2080ti, :joystick: TM Warthog.
