Probably wished before, but it would be nice if we'd be able to place a sandstorm (entire map or sections of the map) in the ME.

It would open up possibilities for mission scenarios

Currently reading Dan Hampton's Viper Pilot and he describes flying though these sandstorms quite well (assuming he didn't just made it up)

Maybe something for the (well overdue :music_whistling:) new weather system?

System specs:

Go to time and weather in the mission editor and look at the bottom, enable dusk smoke and set the visibility. The effect is map wide, but it's all we have to work with currently.

Yeah, I know about this, but I was more referring to orange/brown-ish dust (for use in the PG map). Also it would be great to be able to avoid flying into it, but seeing it in the distance (and have enemy forces not being able to operate because of it)

It is orange/brown-ish. It's a different option than fog, which is white.

Ahh ok, I didn't know that. Will check it out.

Now if we could have sectionable sandstorms rather than the entire map. (Just imagine seeing that huge wall of sand in VR :shocking:)

I believe the technical term his "haboob"

New hotness: I7 9700k 4.8ghz, 32gb ddr4, 2080ti, :joystick: TM Warthog. TrackIR, HP Reverb (formermly CV1)

Old-N-busted: i7 4720HQ ~3.5GHZ, +32GB DDR3 + Nvidia GTX980m (4GB VRAM) :joystick: TM Warthog. TrackIR, Rift CV1 (yes really).

You are correct, at least in AZ that’s what we call them. We get some pretty huge ones. Can’t imagine what they would be like in real life over there.

Best to try it on the Pesian Gulf, somewhere down low near sea level altitude. I'm not even sure if the dust option even exists on the Caucasus map.

I will, thanks.

In "Viper Pilot", Dan Hampton describes how Iraqi air force didn't fly during these kind of storms (or even during "normal" heavy overcast weather). Which got me thinking it could be a nice addition for all those enthusiastic campaign builders in this community.

I've read that book too (it's actually one of my favorite books) and what he encountered was something where no one would fly in, not even the USAF. He (and other pilots) got suprised by the sandstorm while in the air and had no other choice than to fly through it. IIRC correctly Hampton was talked down to the runway by the ATC controller, didn't touch down, but instead dropped a markpoint when he was overflying the runway and then used this markpoint to guide other aircraft down by taking them in a close trail formation.

That was pretty intense to read and I think with the dust (or dusk?) option in DCS you can create a pretty similar situation on the Persian Gulf map with almost no visilibilty.

As you correctly mentioned, they got surprised by weather (in this case a sandstorm). This surprise effect, sudden drastic change of weather, currently can't be simulated in DCS.
