First Portuguese navy U-214 delivered.

The first type U-214 Sumbarine "NRP TRIDENTE" has been previoulsy accepted by the navy following sea trials but only today it arrived at its new home base in Lisbon, marking the beggining of its stealthy service.

The U-214 is a deep water oceanic submarine equiped with hydrogen fuel cells for long range long endurance underwatter missions. It can sail 1500 miles under watter or stay 3 weeks submerged. The best you can do second only to nuclear examples.

It is armed with Black shark torpedoes and harpoon cruise missiles. It doubles as a surveilance asset for it is equiped with advanced sensors and communication and electronic listening devices.

Next year the second sumbarine "NRP Arpão" (harpoon) will be delivered, with a third albeit unlikely on option.

This deal has been controversial, not only because they are being paid during times of economic sacrifices, as the goverment increased taxes to overcome the deficit, but also because the manufacturer failed to honor the ofset deals (only 40% complete). The germans offered the greek rejected unit papanikoulos (in turn due to similar controverse) as a compensation but it was rejected with incredible expediency by the Portuguese goverment. probably because the greek ship had a different configuration, and being form a batch that had many technical problems yet to solve.

The U-214 replaces the tremendously aged 4 ALBACORA class submarines, which were designed in France inspired on german WWII submarines and delivered in early 1960's.

17-sub.jpg

The last one, "NRP BARRACUDA" made its last mission to Gibraltar strait last fall with the mighty age of 41 years in service. THE OLDEST IN THE WORLD and probably the longest serving submarine ever to be decommissioned. So old that the manufacturer droped support 20 years ago and we had to manufacture spares for Portuguese and Pakistani navies.

This is like going from F-86 sabre directly to F-35 lightening, so you have an idea of the technological jump.

I'm still saddened by the loss our our submarine service here in Denmark, a typical political decision to save money, and very shortsighted IMO.

She sure looks beautiful!

Our new subs almost got cancelled as well. Glad we kept them. We had too big ocean territory to cancel them. The old Submarines were trully stone aged, the cook had to cross the war room with the food to get to the cantina. there was ONE (1) toilet for all the crew and baths were off limits even weeks on a row. The ship was barely hanging together in its last mission and had trouble to surface. There was a TV report in that mission...the ship started to infiltrate high pressure watter through a broken valve. Ambient temperature was 40-45 degrees celsius depending on the place in the ship, no air conditioning or purification, and permanent oil/fuel stench. Trully sub human conditions. The sailors needed a new mount to dignify their jobs.

EDIT: heres the TV report:

Royal Navy to get F/A-18's to replace JSF order?

RNbuyHornet.jpg

don't know in UK but the debt here in France is a real problem . jobs cuts , saving money in all ministeries and the list goes on .. if my government would say everyday that money savings have to be done and on another side would purchase such expensive plane with no really need of it , i wouldn't understand . JSF is an outstanding plane but i think governments have no choice because by throwing money by the windows one day'll come that lenders won't thrust anymore and this could lead to serious problems

JPM, if you ask me...its all politics. The only countries to realy have financial problems are Greece, and Portugal because it gave off billions to help Greece and has the bad habit of pardoning other countries debts... But nobody talks about that, neither the further 6 billions spent on useless infra structure just to feed the concrete industry, because the prime or presidents need their popularity ratings and their lobbies backing them up. And then the navy barely got 2 subs for an ammount of money that could be easely be recovered and exceeded it if they managed to combat fraud, tax evasion, and bad management (managers are then further rewarded with billions of bonuses for perfomance go figure). We could easly fit in 20 more subs for all that money, but ok the country doesnt need bodies of soveranty because everybody else is spending like crazy.

The latest desinformation comming from other wanna be primes and presidents is taxes are coming up to pay for the subs.

France is spending on its sub launched ICBM's unlikely to be ever used but nobody talks about that. They have to cut back on the useless regulars.

Utter BS.

one thing people tend to forget when talking about these things is that combating them is also a process that has its cost

Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.

Nuclear dissassion is the only thing a government shoudn't save money on . with a nuclear strike capability a country could nearly skip out over all its army . i wish you were right Pilotasso but the debt here is a huge problem and the government is trying to save money everywhere it cans , and even if sometimes i feel the effects (social aids more difficult to obtain) , i globaly agree with the actual politics . one shouldn't spend the money he doesn't have that's as simple as that . the problem with credits you see it's that when you realize you're in the red it's too late . if the situation escapes to any control then next step is chaos with open door to any possibilties civil war ...

To whom it may concern,

I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that.

Thank you for you patience.

Some times I forget how massive the SU-27 really is, I think this thing can carry 2 F-16 under the wing.

Well I don't mean literally :D

PS

I do think the horizontal "stab" are the same size or close to the size of the F-16 wing. I'm just guessing but that's the way it look like, what do you guys think?

I found this article in the local newspaper. Thought I might post it since the video was in quite good quality. To the non-norwegian people out there, the article is about one (of many) interceptions of russian planes patroling the norwegian border. The video is taken from F-16s based at my hometown Bodø.

Ah the good old Vestfjord-bull as the locals used to call it (because of the enginenoise) Unfortunately I was too young to remember it when it was operational but luckily I have seen it several times at airshows. It is still a beautiful plane :) Nice pictures. What kind of aircraft is the upper photo?

This painting depicts the first intercept of a Tupolev TU-126 Moss carried out by Norwegian Starfighters in the late 1960s. The pilot nearest, Erik Dahlen, remembers that at the time this aircraft was completely unknown and no-one would believe them back at base until his photos had been processed!
