joey45 Posted September 7, 2010 Posted September 7, 2010 The viper was probaly past its flying hours... but yeah it is a waste. The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance. Steel Jaw Posted September 7, 2010 Posted September 7, 2010 Why does Portugal NEED F-16s? Who threatens them? "You see, IronHand is my thing" My specs: W10 Pro, I5/11600K o/c to 4800 @1.32v, 64 GB 3200 XML RAM, Red Dragon 7800XT/16GB, monitor: GIGABYTE M32QC 32" (31.5" Viewable) QHD 2560 x 1440 (2K) 165Hz.
Pilotasso Posted September 7, 2010 Posted September 7, 2010 (edited) The viper was probaly past its flying hours... but yeah it is a waste. We belong to an alliance in which we are founding members and other treaties where we do our part in supporting others. Also they are for air policing ensuring national sovereignty of the airspace. Unfortunately we live in a world that without credible resolve we simply will not survive as a nation or defend our interests ultimately impacting the quality of life of its citizens. Waste of money? Think what it would be like if we gave control of everything to others, how much less we would have, including safety and freedom (cannot be measured in currency). Our planes are between 200-300hours out of a total 8000 of service life. They will be flying for some time yet. ;) Why does Portugal NEED F-16s? Who threatens them? If you are threatened as a country then one or more of the factors below are true: A) You Are politically isolated (no treaties no allies). B) you have neglected your means of sovereignty (armed forces and others). C) you have done something very illegal against other nations, or against your own people. D) your leadership is corrupt or prone to lobbies or other bad orientations and concentrates all riches produced in a small minority. E) Your citizens are in danger of dropping below the threshold of poverty. F) Your country has border with a neighbor with which you compete for interests but you have far less sphere of influence. By the time you are threatened its too late to rush buy weapons to defend your interests. ;) The whole purpose is not getting threatened in the first place. Edited September 7, 2010 by Pilotasso .
Namenlos Ein Posted September 7, 2010 Posted September 7, 2010 (edited) ^^^^ My guess is it's an early production Flanker B. It might even have old AL-31 Lyulkas inside. I can't say was it ever operational or just used as a grounded trainer. If we caould get more info on the images like date and location when pics were taken we could possibly dig more info on tis particular unit. This Su-27 (produced in 1987, features with AL-31F engines; the FFI system, cannon and missile launch equipment removed), now is property of the Aircraft department of Novosibirsk State Technical University (http://www.fla.nstu.ru/). This aircraft was delivered from Krymsk AFB in 2002 by An-22 military transport and leaved for a few years near University buildings. Then it was partially disassembled and moved into Airplanes and Helicopters Design Laboratory building. Assembling was managed by hands of students almost without using any mechanisms, even wings was mounted in place in such manner (“Raz-dva-vzyali!” method). Now all systems of the fighter is ready approximately on 90% but some leaks in hydraulic system still persist. They even fire turbo starter and gain engines up to 24% of power. Был успешно произведён запуск турбостартера - устройства запускающего основные двигатели, при этом двигатели довели до 24 процентной мощности.But further gaining of power was forbidden by University's direction order due the fire danger (needs more then 500 kg of kerosene in fuel tanks). ================ Welcome to SKB (Students' Design Bureau) of Novosibirsk State Technical University! http://ralphmirebs.livejournal.com/85927.html#cutid1 Edited September 7, 2010 by Namenlos Ein
