RAF Phantom - beautiful paint scheme, I wish we'd get the RAF's F-4s in DCS, even if just AI:

tumblr_mgj9t2JJsT1rp8mmoo1_1280.jpg

Different engines which meant a change in fuselage..

Completely different radar and avionics suit..

Might aswel Do the K Variant so everyone will be happy.

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

So we're replacing the Nimrod with a much older aircraft...... Way to go UK Gov't...

Not everything is bad. :) you guys got new fighter capability in the last few years something that was absent since the retirement of the lightning, and re-gaining vertical capability in the not too distant future also.

Got some issues here...

I take it that you are refering to the Typhoon 2

Where 2 brand new fighters hot off the production line flew and landed at their new base only to be cannibalised for parts because the UK Gov't can't afford/forgot to order parts... oh and 1 maybe 2 flown to Italy for a short war that were only there for parts???

and re-gaining vertical capability in the not too distant future also.

:megalol::megalol::megalol::megalol::megalol: etcetc

There's just a little more to it than that.

The gov't buy all this kit with no spares for a few months/week/years...

Oh and the Supersonic harrier aka F35B is a waste of money. IMHO

be glad your getting them at all. Over here, we have only money for Cessnas as F-16 replacements right now. :D

Would of been cheaper to buy used F-15/16 with spares then the EF200.... just like our new plane to replace the ageing Nimrod....

You need to stop believing everything you read in the newspapers.

Not buying spares isn't the issue, nor has it ever been. The issue is that half the time with a new type you can't predict what spares you will need until the systems are mature. So often there are requirements for spares that haven't even been manufactured in any quantity.

There is also the fact that there is little point buying vast amounts of equipment that will be obsolete in a few months. And given the pace of upgrades on Typhoon since it first entered service, that is a constant factor.

But the big overriding fact is that quite simply, we are not in the depths of the Cold War anymore. It is simply not possible to have several £Billion worth of "spares" sat in warehouses doing absolutely nothing. Seriously, there are spares for Tornado and other older aircraft that sit on shelves for years, without ever being used. So much so that extra manpower is needed simply to carry out maintenance on spares that have been sat on shelves because their storage life expires.

Oh and we didn't take a jet out to Ellamy to be robbed for spares, that is utter rubbish. And the serviceability rate of Typhoon was much higher than the Tornados.

I can't believe we're not even getting that until 2020. I honestly can't figure out which is more of a waste - the time or the money?

Seems odd to me that the Queen Elizabeth class Carrier will be in service years before it has the ability to carry aircraft. I know the old carriers needed replacing but to not have the forethought to have both the aircraft and the carrier operational at the same time is a tad embarrassing.

They [the Gov't] was fart arsing about to which version of the F-35 they would buy.

The original contract for the CVF was a quick change to/from a ski resort/proper carrier...

We are getting a Helicopter carrier ... that can have a plane take off under it's own power.

But IF the Gov't want to convert it to a proper carrier then it will cost even more money then originally planed.. It'll be the biggest ship in RN history but still smaller then your Nimitz Class.

In hindsight I would have done the following. Instead of developing the EF2000, I would have developed a stealth STOBAR-capable aircraft with EF-like performance (keeping the French on-board with the EF program). That might have taken an extra 5-10 years to build and would have cost more but it would have been:

a) Ready before the F-35; and

b) Salable.

I would have made 2 STOBAR carriers. To allow for bad weather carrier-ops I'd have then purchased maybe 20 F-35Bs, which would be funded by sales of the above aircraft.

Thought they were AIM-120B too but the fins were too long. I believe they're actually AIM-7 Sparrows. See the similar long fins and the stripes painted behind the seeker. I knew the Super Hornet could carry them, but I didn't know they were still being used operationally.
