jimblue74 Posted January 16, 2020 Posted January 16, 2020 congratulations for the simulator. I rediscovered it about a month ago and since then I have only used that, in particular the f18. I wondered, if it could be a good idea to insert, over time (message addressed to the developers), some basic customization features, so as to make everything more personal. For example, you could start with the helmet of the pilot, perhaps having the opportunity to choose one of several available. Or some personalized decals to put on the plane. I think it could be done with little effort.
draconus Posted January 16, 2020 Posted January 16, 2020 Already possible with skins. Sounds arcady - what's the purpose? It's not like you'd see it in the cockpit, and helmet only in the mirror. Maybe in MAC. Win10 i7-10700KF 32GB RTX4070S Quest 3 T16000M VPC CDT-VMAX TFRP FC3 F-14A/B F-15E CA SC NTTR PG Syria

RustBelt Posted January 16, 2020 Posted January 16, 2020 Since the deep core of DCS is a direct descendant of the old Lock On I don’t think it can do something like this at all. It just doesn’t handle aircraft textures that way. Also why you have to do the old school texture editing to change the look of a plane as opposed to the more modern “paint shop” systems like in say a totally not breaking a draconian forum rule reference to popular car racing games on PC and consoles. It’s also why others have to have your texture installed to see your texture in multi-player. People like calling things “arcade” or “game” as a blanket shutdown of anything they think risks the loss of “total immersion” whatever they think that means sitting at their computer desk playing fighter pilot.
Baco Posted January 17, 2020 Posted January 17, 2020 And Squads like to take lots of screnshots of ourselves ;) So yeah It would be grate to be able to have Helmet and pacthes specific "skins" or liveries... As it it is now Squads need to have as many skins as pilots, if you want personalized helmets and in some cases bort numbers... In 2020 there should be a better way. Of course Not at all priority, but it would be cool.
Kang Posted January 18, 2020 Posted January 18, 2020 It's a nice idea, really, but I'm fairly sure that what RustBelt said is true. It's technically probably a little tricky. Things like helmet and pilot are part of the plane in DCS, which makes sense considering how some modules have very different helmet models included, of course. I remember some old-timey simulators had things like custom nose-art that could be put on top of aircraft skins automatically, for example. Nice touch, just not sure it's workable.
twistking Posted January 18, 2020 Posted January 18, 2020 I don't think that DCS engine would generally prohibit such custom textures. I'd guess that battle damage textures are also just overlays above the base texture. It surely would be possible with some tweaking. It would require some work obviously - as with all new features. Maybe development of MAC will provide DCS with some of those "gamey" features, as long as they don't go against the realism(!). I proposed something similar some month ago. I understand that it is a bit gimmicky, but many people will probably enjoy a feature like it: https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=254547 My improved* wishlist after a decade with DCS *now with 17% more wishes compared to the original
