104th_Crunch Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 Bottom left of pit there is an accelerometer gauge in the F-15. What does it measure? Thanks!
Aeroscout Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 acceleration maybe? DCS Wishlist: 1) FIX THE DAMN RIVERS!!! 2) Spherical or cylindrical panorama view projection. 3) Enhanced input options (action upon button release, etc). 4) Aircraft flight parameter dump upon exit (stick posn, attitude, rates, accel, control volume, control-surface positions, SAS bias, etc). 5) ADS-33 maneuver courses as static objects. 6) Exposed API or exports of trim position and stick force for custom controllers. 7) Select auto multiple audio devices
104th_Crunch Posted January 4, 2008 Author Posted January 4, 2008 I was hoping for details, Unit of Measure, etc. Thanks
RvETito Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 It indicates G-load - proportion of lift force to the gravity force - and for that reason it's dimensionless. It's measured in units- in the case of the F-15 the gauge is graduated from -4 to +10 G's. But that doesn't mean these are the operational limits of the plane. "See, to me that's a stupid instrument. It tells what your angle of attack is. If you don't know you shouldn't be flying." - Chuck Yeager, from the back seat of F-15D at age 89. =RvE=
GGTharos Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 The F-15 can pull 15g's and stay in one piece - and it has done so for real. However, that jet never flew again after it was landed: it was bent, and it was a problem to make sure all the panels were properly closed, screws were difficult to replace, etc etc ... in other words it was no longer maintainable. GGTharos Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 He saved his life by doing this. He blacked out during some ACM or BFM practice (I forget which) and when he came to he found himself diving at the ocean at 600kts. He hauled on the stick (at which point he pulled 15g for several seconds) and he blacked out again, but it saved his life. nscode Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 Lot's more is needed to damage the organs them selves (50+ but for milliseconds) With these relatively low, but prolonged accelerations, it's the blood that gets tossed around (and yes, the blood pressure can do damage to organs, but that's an indirect effect of the accel). Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.
Pilotasso Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 I thought 13G sustained resulted in death by tissue crushing... o_O .
GGTharos Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 Sustained for how long? It matters :) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
RedTiger Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 Regarding that 15 G maneuver, the idea of flying a plane with no FLCS to limit Gs has always spooked me. The idea that there's nothing stopping you from going at a high mach and just ripping the plane apart or killing yourself, short of the pain of pulling so many Gs. Then again, that ability saved that guys life! 1

With the F-4 phantom you could do all this (including ripping off the engines :D) DELL Intel® Core™ i7 Processor 940 2,93 GHz @3 GHz, 8 MB cache | 8.192 MB 1.067 MHz Tri Channel DDR3 | 512 MB ATI® Radeon™ 4850 | 500 GB 7200 rpm Serial ATA | Samsung SM 2693 HM 25.5 " | HOTAS Cougar Thrustmaster |
GGTharos Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 But remember that unlike LOMAC, it takes plenty of strength to pull that stick back, you know how many G's you are pulling because you feel'em, and you are also trained to do the onset as smoothly as you can, which again, gives you time to feel how much you're pulling. Other than that, yep, scary. You really have to be on the ball when flying such an aircraft. Regarding that 15 G maneuver, the idea of flying a plane with no FLCS to limit Gs has always spooked me. Eagle Driver Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 Wow, and here I thought that the real F-15 actually stopped you from pulling more than 8.75 like it does in LO :D [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] If you fly a perfect Defensive BFM and the bandit does a perfect Offensive... Someone you know is going to be recieving Insurance money very soon.
GGTharos Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 Nope ... the real thing won't stop you. Ever. So that's modeled wrong in LO. There's no weight imposed limitation or anything at all. 104th_Crunch Posted January 5, 2008 Author Posted January 5, 2008 Wow, do I ever feel silly:doh: The guage I was inquiring about is not the accelerometer. I already new what that was. It's the gauge shown in the pic below. I can't match it to IAS or TAS. What does it measure exactly? Thanks
104th_Crunch Posted January 8, 2008 Author Posted January 8, 2008 Bump, Curious guys, What is the guage for? Thanks
IvanK Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 Its meant to be a Standby ASI reading Knots indicated but from a separate source to the Primary ASI.
104th_Crunch Posted January 8, 2008 Author Posted January 8, 2008 Its meant to be a Standby ASI reading Knots indicated but from a separate source to the Primary ASI. I see, another backup. Thank you sir.
RvEYoda Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 I just think the probability of that is very high in critical areas. Gotta be lucky sometime ;). How long do you mean with "sustained"? S = SPARSE(m,n) abbreviates SPARSE([],[],[],m,n,0). This generates the ultimate sparse matrix, an m-by-n all zero matrix. - Matlab help on 'sparse'
VMFA117_Poko Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 9g's usually could be sustained for 9 to 12 sec to not blockout totally. 15g's ... ? Well, in Apollo13 movie when crew trained enter into atmosphere, pilot got to 15g's and they stopped 'cuz it was taken as a death. But hey, lately guy fold down from top of skyscraper and he live. Miracles happen.
Cougar12dk Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 In a carcrash, for instance, and depending on the speed, you can be exposed to quite a bit more than 15g. Of course the exposure is a second versus 9+ seconds in a fighter. I was a passanger in a carcrash in New Zealand 4Ѕ years ago. And I don't know how many g's was excerted on me, but I was thrown through the seatbelt (japanese P.O.S............ NEVER buy their junk. It's cheap for a reason!!) and was smashed against the windshield.
egaRim Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 During the Red Bull Air Race 2006 in Berlin, pilots peaked at 14g or 15g (might be even more by now because they keep on pushing the limits) There are some tight low-level bends and they mustn't black out ;)
GGTharos Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 I believe last I heard, the record for sustaining 9G without blacking out is 110s. The average the USAF shoots for is 45sec continuous, IIRC.
