Dunno if this Vid is allready postet, the Thread is quite long but take a look at this:

Basically FPS are stuck at 45, well there is an improvement but it makes me cry to see all those other games with different complexity but way better VR support....

So according to this Benchmark i wouldnt buy a 3090 if i allready had a 2080. performance increase is marginal for DCS that is.

For everything else in the Computer World the improvement is massive but in DCS we reached the possibilities of Hardware acceleration and will only get improvements if ED does this on the Softwareside.

Yep, been posted and discussed here already some time ago.

As you said, it's quite pointless from a DCS POV as he couldn't get it out of reprojection 45fps.

3090 first impressions for me, jumped right in and forgot to fire up fpsVR, but I am seeing 40%+ Viper framerates over my 1080 Ti in non-CPU bound Instant Action missions of Caucasus Free Flight where I do my personal low altitude route over the vehicles the A-10s attack, then over the town, up the hill, into the valley. The Viper also seems to allocate more than 11GBs VRAM now. Nevada F-15 Aggressors instant action stays at 90fps sync max most of the time from low 70s before.

Interestingly, the SU-25T Free Flight instant action (recommended since it is the common module) had almost the exact same framerates as before...

I decided to hold off for another month with FalconNW and get the 5950x. I’m told to expect it to be the same price as the 3950x was, and to now expect my system in mid-November.

I originally was going to go with 3950x because a) I didn’t want to lose my place in line with the 3090, and b) I thought Zen3 wouldn’t be available until January.

I’ve been assured I won’t lose my Founders Edition, and seeing that and the claims of better single core performance than 10900k sold me that I should wait.

Now I’ll get the computer and the Reverb G2 around the same time.

Good decision on the 5950X. I wouldn’t pick the 3950X over 10900K for gaming, but if the 5950X is as good as AMD claims then it should beat 10900K in single core performance. I plan to build another PC next year and it will be interesting when it comes to CPU and GPU choices.

@FritzTheGerman

unfortunately, the ingame PD setting does not work as intended by SteamVR and other VR compositors. It's actually working like the setting for monitor resolution in 2D mode. In a VR game the VR compositor and the connected HMD with it's driver define the standard resolution for both frames that have to be rendered (left and right eye). As an example with a Valve Index, 2016 x 2240 pixels per panel is the minimum needed to display a lens distortion corrected frame pixel perfect on each 1440 × 1600 pixels panel. If you set ingame PD 1.0, the game will deliver a 1:1 frame at 2016x2240 to the VR compositor that will do it's job with handling all the necessary steps to transform the correct distortion for your HMD. If you set a higher PD, the game will render a higher resolution frame.

With 1.8 PD you will end up with 3628 x 4032 per eye in the first step, which is crazy high, takes a much bigger screen buffer in VRAM and will also cost CPU performance, because all CPU bound visual passes have to process a much higher amount of information. The next step is downsampling both 3628x4032 frames to 2016x2240 for the VR compositor, which is doing his distortion pass and if you set a higher resolution percentage will do another supersampling pass on top. A huge waste of performance. To get the most out of visuals in VR in DCS, never use the ingame PD, it will kill your frametimes on CPU and GPU instantly. Go for 1.0 and let the VR compositor handle it's SS passes afterwards. This way you can balance the CPU bound scenario, because 99% of the VR compositor workload goes directly to GPU usage. And there is plenty of headroom there with a 3090.

In Steam VR you have the advantage of adding a second "per app" setting for supersampling to finetune GPU usage to the max. The formula is DCS PD x SteamVR general SS setting x Steam VR per app SS setting.

Thank you Alec for your detailed answer. Thanks also to all of you for your help. As i can see you own a 3090 as well as a beefy cpu! This helps alot to understand the mistakes. i went back to 2x msaa and 1.0 PD ingame, and found out how to properly default SS in the oculus tool. And set it to 1.5 in the rift S without stacking, yes that's necessary reverb users ;)

meanwhile i can finally say, i found peace. I'm still not sure what went wrong. if overclocking cpu went unstable or stacking with SS/PD.

since i was kinda dispointed about the result with my 3090, i decided to buy a 10900k (not only using it for dcs and vr) , together with an mid asus mainboard an the Noctua nh-d15. That's probably the best air cpu cooler, for those who doesn't know. So i managed to reach 5.2ghz stable after a couple hours.

Once again the charnwood campaign mission on normandy for testing (cpu bound) . no stutters! 80 fps in most of the cases, frametimes better than ever. tested some more solo missions on caucasus and persian gulf. Very satisfying. Even less stuttering frames above 40

This will be my last post for now. Just wanted to let you guys know, that everything is fine and i am no longer disapointed about the 3090 upgrade. Thanks for the help everyone! Now ready for the G2

How about this?

Hopefully that's somebody driving up scalpers, but I doubt it. Also, DCS will allocate even more VRAM with a 3090, I think the most I have seen now is 15.3Gb after a Supercarrier Hornet landing and taxiing to parking. So while there is still the allocated vs used discussion, it does make me happy to have the 24Gb over 3080 10Gb.

Yep, I don't know how the secondary market is in the UK but $3700 is high 3090 asking price (not to mention exchange rate!), not 3080 that is in that listing. And now I'm happy to have the extra VRAM since it is at least being allocated above 11Gb and anecdotally agree that it could reduce stutters. If 3090 isn't your card and you are running more pixels than a Rift S, I'd recommend waiting for 3080 20Gb announced for December now, 3070 Ti 16Gb or Big Navi 16Gb probably next month. I haven't seen over 16Gb yet, but it's been close.

Oh I have a 3090 FE locked in with Falcon Northwest, I’m just waiting for 5950x CPU availability. System is already built minus the CPU.

No way in hell I’d pay double MSRP on eBay. Was just throwing it out there since 3080 prices were being discussed.

That's not bad. Normandy is the worst optimized map because it came out before ED came out with better options. The company Urga (sp?) stated that they would go back to fix it after Syria is done. When it first came out, it was unplayable in VR. It has gotten better, but that was part of the "we made VR improvements" saga where only some of us saw the benefits. I happened to be in the "damn, that's much better camp"

I would have to dispute that. The Channel map is absolutely horrendous for VR. (Fly over any town and look down.) Normandy seems OK to me.
