I have an orriginal rift and stopped playing with it and DCS for that matter about 2 years ago. I'm looking at getting back into DCS and was considering getting a new VR head set..

Are the new gen head sets able to read fine print in the cockpits yet?

I have no desire to spend the money on a new headset if I still cannot read the print, fine details in the cockpit. The last time I played dcs with the rift I had to move my head so far forward look at gauges that it made me feel like I had 20/100 vision. After living most of my life requiring glasses and finally getting lasik, I refuse to EVER feel like that again...

Thanks Pr1mal

If your desired effect on the target is making the pilot defecate his pants laughing then you can definitely achieve it with a launch like that.

That´s very subjective: most people will tell you (when final G2 units arrives at their hands) that they can read fine all the gauges with a G2 but, of course, you will be better served with a 4K panel per eye and 130º horizontal FOV (but XTAL is not a consumer product and Pimax 8Kx....)

Anyway, most of the people with Lasik surgery are not getting 20/20 clear vision because of aberrations, glare, not perfect refraction free vision or a mix of them. (And I´m saying most of the people, not all of them. And I´m Optometrist, I know what I´m saying because I see it many times).

So: You will have to try yourself.

I have both the Reverb G1(sqame resolution, same FOV) and Pimax 8KX.

The reverb is sharper. Reverb G1 has a lens thats only sharp in the centre, but its good damned sharp. If at 100% Supersampling its good and you can redan the most in the cockpit, with SS 150%(or more) its really sharp and everything you need to see in the cockpit is esay to se/read.(Edit) Hig SS is a bit costy on the GPU....

G2 isnt out but we now its the same resolution and same FOV so pixels per degree should be the same. G2 has a new lens that should increase the sweet spot where the picture is sharp.

G2 fixes most of the issues G1 had(werent big issues, its really good to), but with increased sweet spot and mechanic IPD adjust it will be it. One could only wish for OLED screens or something that give better black levels and more accurate colors( not that importand for gaming for the average gamer I guess) :-)

You covered it well. I did read that the G2 will have "brighter" panels, which people have taken to mean better color depth, and possibly black levels. But really the G2 isn't gonna be revolutionary over the G1, but it should be somewhat better with the better optics/precise IPD adjustment/brighter panels. Plus the stand off audio.

Reverb - I went from CV1 to Reverb and it's lovely. Yes, you can read the instruments. Any SDE is not nearly as pronounced as the CV1.

Everyone, thanks for your input.

Think I'm going to wait another generation of VR head sets to come out and I will see what you guys say again..

I understand exactly what you want Pr1mal but without being a Debbie Downer, I would say it is an iffy proposition. I have 20/18 vision in both eyes and have not found the Rift S, Quest 2 or Index to offer what I would call clear readability. The HP Reverb Generation 1 is better but still not "clear", especially for fine print. I suspect that the HP Reverb G2 is going to be better hardware but I have not heard any scuttlebutt about their display algorithms improving much. I think it will be questionable even if you pair the HP Reverb G2 with a RX 6900 XT or RTX 3090 and hope to have the readability that you (and I) want. My guess (and I hope I am proven wrong) is that the Reverb G2 will be better than the G1 but with regards to visuals, I would be surprised if it was more than a 5 - 10% improvement. You can try the Reverb G2 but it will be an expensive undertaking at more than $1700 for the headset and GPU to power it.

I was kind of figuring this so not a Debbie Downer.. Hense why I posted this question.. I bought the cv1 when it went on sale just well to try it.. Whilst its cool, I hardly used it, probably a grand total of 10-15 minutes in dcs and maybe an hour total.. I don't exactly want to spend $$$ on something newer only to have essentially the same issue.

My vision when It was corrected started at about 20/18 L and 20/20 R. It's been roughly 12yrs since I had the procedure and my eyes are no longer 20/20.. I barely passed my FAA 2nd class med with out the "you need glasses bit". When reading the chart I had to squint ect to read it.. How ever when sitting in my car or plane or anywhere else I can read everything just fine with both eyes open and not needing to move closer.. Compared to before the surgery where I couldn't read my alarm clock with out smashing it to my face in the morning. Which is exactly how I felt when I tried DCS with the rift cv1.. With that being said... and back to you being an Optometrist, what is your feelings on getting the surgery done for a second time.. I was 25 when I had it done the first time and being 38 now. I have a feeling my next exam for either my Drivers license or faa Medical will require the use of glasses.. In the short I dread it.

12 yrs since your surgery...... well, at that time you will have been lucky to get a Lasyk surgery (and not at today level).

Man: it depend a lot over many things (refraction before surgery, cornea thikness, technique used, etc). Imposible to recomend nothing without seeing the problem in person, and, maybe, your actual problem is different than before.

But I see many times people buying bigger monitors, phones, 8K, etc and trying to improve their visuals without paying attention over the main problem: their eyes.

Not to mention risking their eyes with dangerous surgerys: Have you seen any Ophthalmologist with their own laser applied?.... No one does that.

And, then, there is the other side of the coin with many people: If I could improve their visual after their intervention: they just don´t want to accept the fact that they failed with their decision and do nothing but thinking on another solution based on surgery..... Be careful, you just have 2 eyes.

Well 4 years later. I am thinking about VR again.. I stopped playing games all together but I need something for my Idle hands after work so I've been thinking DCS. With that VR headsets.

How is the fine print in cockpit viewing now?

Any recommendations with the following system?

3080

I7-3700KF

32g ddr5 7200 [dont think the xmp profile is running it that fast though]
