I was thinking of a woods with some really tall trees (almost 100ft=30m) sticking out from the rest of the plants and some bushes on terrain might add to general realism and eye candy of DCS!

 

I'd like to avoid feeling of flying in a helo over city park like trees!

Got it and yeah - bushes would be nice. It's something I mentioned loong time ago to implement in DCS. I vote for it.

When I saw the screens I wondered about that, too, it is especially remarkable in the last screen. IMO the effect is less noticeable in the video though, and when you look at pictures from the region it seems that the constrast between ground and trees can really be quite big. Compare the following images for example:

Comparing those images I'd say only the trees at medium distance stand out too much, while the far and near distances look okay.

ARMA looks more similar to those pictures than LO/DCS.

 

The abnormal lighting difference between the terrain and the trees has been present since Lockon 1.0. It can also be observed at dawn and dusk, when trees are lit very little (almost black) while the terrain is much lighter. Hopefully they will fix this in the future.

Use teka's mod to solve it but things like tht happen IRL too. Since trees are much darker than sorounding grass or dirt they'll seem much darker in low light conditions.

 

Here's the example;

Compare two cars-one of them is green and the other one is yellow. Now look at them during dusk or dawn, green one will seem black, yellow will turn brownish!

Great video, Beach!

 

To all - both the trees and the terrain textures used in the video are already new. However, this does not mean they are final by any means and changes can still swing both ways - toward implementing more new textures or going back toward older textures. ED is still evaluating what looks and works best in all possible game environments. Much of this work has involved the ED Testers and Partners teams, including Teka Teka and the SimMod group. ED is also evaluating some modded sound effects provided by Diveplane.

 

As far as haze (there was no fog in the video), trees, and transparent buildings - all of these have been tweaked throughout development and this process is not yet finished. In general, the big change here is that, unlike FC, as you decrease your FoV (increase optical zoom), you get increased LODs, which is why you see many more trees in the distance. Even though this is beta and things may change, this does not mean you will see perfect scenery even at release. Inevitably, there are design compromises and engine limitations which drive graphics implementation. Luckily, if you think you can come up with a better balance of visibility, density, etc. of objects, the configuration files will allow you to tweak many of these parameters.

 

P.S. I do have one correction for Beach. :smartass:The ABRIS should not display target movement, as it has no real-time information on any ground units. It simply displays their starting position as loaded from the ME.

I know what you mean, but in LO it really seems to be off. The terrain and objects are lit independantly, in a non-uniform way.

I like terrain texures shown in Beach's video! Although this one developed by Grandsurf from SIM-MOD is my favorite:

At dawn and dusk, trees appear unnaturally dark against the terrain. Those who live in high ground overlooking low ground, check it out.

Would have liked to have seen a sortie in a High-Threat environment with a coupla of Mobile Tors and the like what with the absence of a RWR.........:helpsmilie:

 

 

How would such a Mission scenario pan out in BS? Do you have a dedicated SEAD flight to call on (AI obviously) and if so are you able to request assistance if and when a Threat is foreseen/arises?

 

Or are you to take your chances and continue to stalk your prey in an attempt to send some 30mm AP Luv his way, only to receive a Radar - Dart in the teeth after a tense 2 Hour crawl through the Weeds, barely a klick from Launch Parameters.......Shoulda checked that Ingress Route more thoroughly...........frusty.gif

Beach, if you made that comment because you saw that circle move, or change in its area--I think it is changing based on your current altitude. When you fly in mountains you will notice the threat circle change, as you change altitude. I think it is tell you, at your current altitude, and LOS towards the threat, whether you are in its engagement zone.
