amalahama Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 one of the worst mechanical failures that can happen to a plane an engine breakdown while taking off Yes, but a fire in an engine for itself shouldn't cause a fatal accident. Aircrafts are ready for flying and takeoff with an engine only. Some more mechanical failures probably occur during the takeoff. Some media talk about the aircraft delayed an hour before the flight because the pilot found out some problems with the refrigeration system. A very strange thing is, although the left engine fell into fire, however the aircraft diverted to the right. Is very strange because usually the aircraft yaw and roll over the engine failure side... Regards
X-man Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 The aircraft, McDonnell Douglas MD-82, is a T-tail aircraft. T-tails have poorer stall characteristics than aircraft with conventional tails/stabalizors and wing mounted engines. http://www.airliners.net/open.file/1358541/L/ Given the fact that the explosion happend very short after takeoff, the time during flight where the alpha is the highest, the loss of one engine would have incresed that alpha and gone into a stall which, with the little altitude, could have been unrecoverable. This is just my speculation though. Another spectulation; Could the hydrulics been damaged by explosion/fire and cuased the plane to bank right  Whatever the cuase, may they RIP... 1 64th Aggressor Squadron Discord: 64th Aggressor Squadron TS: 135.181.115.54
