I have feeling that while flying in spitfire when you open canopy sound level  does not change, i would expect to a lot louder with canopy open. and noticeable quieter with canopy closed. Correct me if im worng.

Sounds different, i don't use hear like in helmet, looks like hear like in helmet don't affect external sound when canopy open. I don't mod game in any way.

Hear like in helmet should lower external and internal sounds equally if im concerned.

I think sound can be very variable between set ups….

I got into a spat on the Spitfire cockpit graphics / sound thread as I was shocked by the “low quality Spitfire sounds”.  Sounded like a high pitched petrol lawnmower, even though the Anton and Dora sounded good

Turned out that my sound set up had gone from 7.1 surround to two speaker stereo, just using two tinny front speakers - timing corresponded with a Win 10 update.  Some fiddling got the full surround back and all was good.

Not sure why the Spit sound was so badly affected compared to the other aircraft - possibly a more sophisticated sound setup with more reliance on the sub???

I use stereo setup 2 speakers, maybe missing some sounds, which don't play at those channels.

That's my version of DCS below. And it is really different from yours. what version of DCS are you using?

@btd

Now i know why my version sounds different, all comes down to my first issue that engine sounds quiet (external engine sound)  when operated at 18lbs and 3000rpm.

All your recordings are done at lower boost i can see that, on my end engine gets noticeably louder when boost goes down, even with throttle cut off engine sounds louder then when operated at 18bls.

I use Open beta 2.7.4.9632

I see. The problem is in the overall sound limiter and the huge volume of the "cockpit overboost" sound.

First I should say, that flying with an open canopy at 18lbs is not good, because this will decrease the speed more than the increase in power will give 😄

Well, we should think how to fix it. Because the easiest way is to limit "overboost" sound volume. but then we will be partially devoid of information in the cockpit

Maybe there is other solution

Anyway, Thanks for your report

I think internal sound is good, but imho external engine sounds need attention.  It is very noticeable if i got to F2 and look at plane from side and i move throttle from 12lbs to 18lbs and back i can cleary hear that some element od engine sounds fading away  completely making it very quiet.

I think you speak about prop sound, not the engine. And that is ok if you increase your boost to these values

Still it doesn't make sense for me since, P-51 don't have this weird prop mute at max power, i know different plane.

Here's what I got after some tweaking. There are 2 different boost values in the video.

Yes, there is no very bright sound with a high boost from the outside. But I'm not sure if that should be the case with the motor screaming so close to the pilot. With such motor params, a pilot should simply go deaf, being at such a distance.

Sounds much better.

Overall sound level will always be up to user, i can set volume very loud, my issue was throttle cut off being louder then throttle maxed out no matter what global sound level was.

Pardon the resurrection, but I also find it just as loud with the canopy open vs closed. I thought it was a bug too until I realized it's the same thing on my motorbike. When I ride without my windshield (ie canopy open), all I hear is the wind noise. When I ride with my windshield (canopy closed), all I hear is the noisy Italian engine. They are both equally loud, just in different ways, if that makes sense. Either way, I always wear earplugs when riding, maybe that's the secret to the Spitfire too! 🙂

Being a couple of feet away from an unmuffled Merlin must be pretty loud… I doubt closing a plexi canopy is going to make it much quieter. Of course it’ll do wonders for the aerodynamics though.
