Please help me land this thing

Forget landing on a spot I want to land at... I can barely land period.

I bring myself (eventually) to a hover. then when I start to lower myself by lowering collective, I'm either sinking too fast out of control or barely going down. Not sure if I'm chasing the descent needle... while I'm trying to do this, i'm either starting to move forward or go back out of hover.

I did the taxi/hover/flight training and it helped alot hone things down. watched the video Matt released about this issue I'm having but didn't seem to help me out.

soooo, please any advice?

I can't even figure out how to get to my landing spot and stop right on top of it. If I do any big collective movement, I do down out of control.

Did you watch Wags' video he posted this weekend about settling with power & VRS?  It may help give some insight on part of what you have described, but definitely like Jester said also try curves and it'll just take some time getting used to not hamfisting the movements.

Try a curve on the collective and stop making big movements on the collective.

Do you have a recommendation for a Collective curve?

Trying +10 will make it more forgiving. Or you could go -10 to make the collective more precise in the low rpm range we're talking about. But in the end it's just about making very small adjustments and watching the VSI on the altitude tape on the right. Is it dropping fast? Add a tiny bit of collective, then lower collective a tad. It's about minute adjustments. Here, you can see as I'm about to land I let it get away from me for a second but recover quickly:

In most helicopters, the hard part for me is regulating the collective when transitioning from forward flight to hovering. I actually find the Apache to be easier due to the altitude change indicator off to the right on the helmet mounted display. What I tend to do is as I'm coming in to land, I monitor that indicator tape and try to keep the sink rate within the scale, close to the middle if possible to avoid damage or VRS.

Something to keep in mind, a small bit of collective movement can get you a long way when you are landing. Big changes aren't a good idea. Make a small change, see what that does, and then rinse and repeat until you are on the ground.

the funny thing is after I hit down to the ground and I rebound back to the altitude where I was trying to land...just like nothing happened, and landing again :)))

It's probably not proper technique, but what has helped me with landings back when I started playing the Mi-8 was the following mantra:  "lose altitude first, speed second".

In other words: if you intend to land, start a good way out from where you want to touch down. Lower your collective a bit, so you start sinking. Trim back on the cyclic a little to control your descent rate. Keep repeating that a few times until you are pretty close to the ground. At that point you'll be low, but probably still quite fast. Now start pulling back on the cyclic more (and re-trimming + adapting collective)  to lose your speed without re-gaining altitude.  With a bit of practice you'll end up "low and slow" near the position where you want to touch down. Now carefully drift the final distance to the position where you want to land. When you get very close, lower the collective a tiny bit more to lose the final few feet of altitude.

What made all the difference to me is that I watch the vertical speed indicator like a hawk, and make lots of small inputs to the collective. Previously I was descending way too fast and got into settling with power and then promply crashed.

yea, that's why I started reducing altitude first with the Mi-8. Can't get into VRS when you are going too fast 🙂

Beside keeping an eye on the VSI-tape, I also think the flight-path-marker (FPM) is a great help to spot when you start to drop too quickly or raise because you added too much collective.

You were just checking then suspension to make sure it worked. 😄

Watching this helped me understand the dynamics of what is going on... Even though he made it before the apache module, he uses the percentages which helped some.

I got to land somewhat alright and kinda where I want to be although, I'm still horrible at it and I think mostly it was luck lol. I'm getting little better at arresting the descent rate at least.

That being said, it reminds me I haven't even gotten to shooting missiles or the CPG position yet... Just trying to learn to fly still lol.
