However, new AMRAAM's are less maneuverable because of the clipped wings.

You're hit by a 30mm or a 40mm round. Which one's going to kill you harder? Will you be able to tell the difference? ;)

It was never a factor for all the kills it already got nor the misses either. ;)

That is completely different subject all together.

But, new AMRAAM's for the F-35 and F-22 are less maneuverable then the old ones, right?

Some claim they're more maneuverable. Hard to tell, no?

The surface area that was removed can be put back by lenghtening the fin instead, and you'll get back the same amount of force if you want to (ie. same amount of g's).

On the other hand, you might not lose so much that you'll want to put it back there, and you thus cut down on drag and gain a bit of a range in a straight shot.

The AMRAAM has had clipped fins since the C version, which has been around for more than a decade, IIRC. It currently has the highest Pk of any radar guided AAM out there - not just highest, but twice that of any other radar guided AAM. I don't think it's suffering from maneuverability problems, nor does it look like Raytheon thinks it can increase the Pk by 'increasing maneuverability'.

Other things have been done to make the missile deadlier instead, such as equipping it with helmet cueing, higher OBA capability, tighter notch, better autopilot and radar filters etc.

To put it in other words, you picked the least interesting feature of this missile to get stuck on.

You are right GG. As long as there is several times as many F-15's, F-16, F-18's and AWACS then what your opponent have for MiG29A's (without GCI or AWACS) then it really doesn't matter how maneuverable the missile is.

You will simply launch your missile from the best possible condition, and when it hits (what a surprise) claim how good the missile is.

Oh yeah .. I am out ...

I have this idea that us computergeeks will feel more at home in it than real pilots ... but then again we will be flying UAV's of course. :D

But your right: what if this screen just turns black in flight? Knowing how "reliable" my computers have been the last 20 years, I would volunteer for for the vanilla Su-25 force with real dials immediately!

I wonder if this 1 MFCD design is the best. When you lose it for some reason you will be like blind.

The article indicated that it was two 8 x 10 displays side-by-side. If one is lost, data is transferred to the other.

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

To whom it may concern,

I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that.

Thank you for you patience.

Some nice pics and stuff in there. What intrigued me was slide 33 showing usable weapons. Quite an arsenal it can choose from (those external tanks look freaky, are they new?) but only 4 A2A missiles: 120 B/C , 9X and ASRAAM. Is this very old information? Or very conservative/reserved? Many F-35 fans always claimed that the units in service would carry 120D. It's a bit strange, that so many projected subsystems are mentioned, but not the most important weapon as claimed by many fans.

And that last slide had me thinking they were kinda crash-testing it there at first glance. Had a brief WTF moment there. ;)

I think the best slides was the one showing the radar mapping, that detected the cracks on the runway. I do not know if this is normal operation on modern radars but impressive non he less. Also, it looks like there are hyperlink to video but I could not get them to work, any luck for you guys?
