GazAce Posted September 26, 2022 Posted September 26, 2022 Hey there DCS Brothers & Sisters, sorry if this has been spoken about already but I've got a few questions.. 1. What does STD HDG stand for? ( I used to know but I forgot ) 2. Why, when selected gives us a nice quick Nav alignment? 3. How come it's not in our Hornet Flight Manual & can it be added? As far as i remember, it allows for quicker alignment if jet position was updated after previous landing prior to engines shut down, and jet was not moved since than. It allows for quick alignment as jet "remembers" at what position and heading it was shut down and does not have to figure that out during subsequent start up. However if i recall correctly there was a limitation, that if stored heading fast alignment was used, next startup will require full alignment procedure. I would have a question how or if, this option is valid with operations from aircraft carriers?

The jet uses carrier's position and heading provided via datalink. Edited September 27, 2022 by Minsky Dima | My DCS uploads

Yes i know that on deck, carrier position, heading and velocity is provided via radio link or by cable or is put in manually. I was rather asking regarding stored heading option if it is valid on carrier deck, as jets are moved around a lot between shutdown and subsequent start up.

I can only speak for another aircraft, but with a similar INS: "Stored heading alignemnt" or FAST ALIGN is used for missions, where time from getting in the jet till take-off is critical and yes, one has to do a NORM alignment before in order to be ready for it. vCVW-17 is looking for Hornet and Tomcat pilots and RIOs. If the aircraft is moved after the NORM alignment, you can not use FAST ALIGN. Even if the aircraft was not moved on the deck...the whole damn ship moves!!! Using FAST ALIGN is just not necessary for normal traing missions or even comabt missions, since they have a preplanned schedule. It is only necessary for alert missions. Now, how they do that on a carrier, I don´t know, but I could imagine, that they have electricity on those jets the whole time and the INS already running. Note, that there are dedicated aircraft assigned to such a mission. 1 vCVW-17 is looking for Hornet and Tomcat pilots and RIOs. Join the vCVW-17 Discord.
