Add Reverse Clearing for the GAU-8 and possibly other Gatling Guns!

If you're not sure what I mean by reverse clearing, there's a mechanic that the GAU-8/A uses in both the A-10 and CIWS system called Reverse Clearing, basically after firing, it rotates the barrels counter-clockwise to remove unfired rounds out of contact with hot barrels, thereby preventing an unwanted “cook off”.

By backing unfired rounds out of the gun, the propellant in the case remains below auto ignition temperature.

What it looks like IRL in the A-10:

12 seconds into the video, he fires the gun for a quick burst, then after about a second, it does a reverse clearing as indicated by a scratch-like sound.

And here's what it looks like in the CIWS system:

14 seconds in, it stops firing and after a second it reverse clears the barrels.

I think it would be a wonderful and cool feature to add, hope you guys consider it!

This was actually implemented in DCS A-10C but seems to have gotten broken some time ago (along with the gun unsafe warning caption). Seems it hasn’t been restored in a-10C II.

I’ve heard there’s also a cooling cycle where the gun rotates around and makes a pretty audible clunk every 30 seconds or so for a few minutes after the gun shoots. It would be a cool bit of realism.

You can't see the barrels in the cockpit view. So, you just want the scratchy sound?

The cannon is already animated and you can't see that from the cockpit either, all this would be is changing the animation.

In real life you'd hear the sound of the barrels clearing.. It'd be a very nice add for immersion and after all it was reported internally.

We might as well stop rotating the barrel then. And get rid of the brrrrt sound. Screw immersion lol

Way to turn it around bud.

Nobody is more into immersion than me but this could only be seen while flying outside the plane like superman. You don't like realism with your immersion?

Go ahead and put the animation in the gun but in reality nobody would see it.

Its not just visibile from the outside though. Its very audible from inside the cockpit, which should be fairly easy to add in. There's also a 2 minute cooling cycle after you fire the gun and you can hear a loud clunk from the gun every 30 seconds as its rotating 180 degrees.

Just don't see why adding screeching sound would be a bad or useless thing. We can't feel things in sims, so audio additions are a nice welcome.

I mean when you fire the F16, a little door opens in the back for venting or something. no idea what it is, but itwas a requested feature. I've never seen it until bogey dope made a video about it. lol

It's not a bad thing. We can't see the landing gear animation either, but it's pretty nice to see when we do.

Any noise added is good. As long as you know that's all you'll be adding that you can see/hear. Videos are different and we get to see what we can't when flying.
