If I may:

If I tend to run small missions with max eye candy, is there really any use upgrading to a "hot" CPU like the 5800X3D or 7700X3D as opposed to the 3700X I have already? Or is it all the GPU?

(The 5800X3D only requires a BIOS update in my case.)

Thank you.

Reviews are kinda slim, but here is a grab from Paul's Hardware for Msfs2020.

Just check your GPU usage or, if you play in VR, CPU frametimes. If GPU is at 100% all the time, or your CPU frametimes are lower than GPU frametimes, then no point in upgrading the CPU.

Overall, if you don't have a lot of disposable income, then 5800X3D is much more sensible option with your current hardware.

Sounds eminently sensible. That's probably why I didn't think of it.

What do you think about DCS and MSFS scalling the same with hardware needs?

Just bit the bullet and ordered a whole new system based on 7800X3D and RTX4090.  I only play in VR now and the poor old 4770k @4.4ghz since 2013 is having all sorts of issues.  A big influence is the ability to pop in the latest and greatest in 2025 vs the Intel platform which is being replaced soon.  But i can't complain, 10 years out of the CPU and mobo,,,,

Which mobo and ram?

Does anyone know if win 11 is better for the 7800x3d than win 10? I know the game bar and core parking of win 11 is irrelevant for this chip but was interested in other aspects as well, pcie5 mngmt, storage transfer speeds, Ethernet drivers. I would prefer to stay w win 10

4930K @ 4.5, 32g ram, TitanPascal

@motoadve I purchased on Newegg

Regarding MOBO: I posted this up over at AnandTech:

https://forums.anandtech.com/threads/pciex16-drops-to-x-8-when-m2-ssd-is-installed.2611401/

After extensive reading, I decided to go with the AMD 7800X3D (Purchased yesterday). Main reason why I went with AMD 7800X3D vs Intel Core i9-13900K. Heat, Watts & Gaming performance comparisons. I also have no need to concern myself with Gen 5 concerns for the near future based on most of what I have read so far. I cant count how many videos I have watched along with reading articles. I appreciate the knowledgeable feedback I have received here and will continue to post up with questions. Now the next journey begins. Selection of motherboard, then its RAM. By the way, I found what I believe to be the best informative video regarding AMD MOBO selections. This really cleared up alot of confusion for me.

So far my list for MOBOs are as follows, the ones with strike through's have been omitted due to some lack of features, such as lack of full audio suite on back Panel and small amount of Rear USB ports or cost.

So for VR gaming the AMD 7800X3D is faster than the AMD 7950X3D?

I am ready to buy, but still not sure which one.

From all the reviews I've seen, the 7800X3D is the better choice. Less expensive, and the 7950X3D only has the extra memory cache on 8 of its cores I think. I know the 7900X3D only has the extra cash on 8 of its cores on one die, and the other 4 cores, on a separate die on the CPU, do not have it. So buying the 7800X3d gets you the same single die 8 cores with the extra memory cache.

Check out some reviews on YouTube. Pretty sure if it's just for gaming the 7800X3D is the way to go.

Look at Gigabyte B650 Aorus Pro AX. This and the ASUS B650E-F were the two boards I was looking at, specifically for the IO. I ultimately went with B650E-F for some of the under the hood bios OC features and the fact that I'm more familiar with ASUS bios layout. But both boards have excellent expansion and rear IO.

Yes, if you look at my post above, that is 1 of the 2 boards I have highlighted in Red as 1st pick, and that is the one I am focusing on unless I find out otherwise I should be looking at something else.

@dugite57Nice build sir! I cant use that motherboard because of the lack of audio accommodations on the rear I/O. I see you went with the 64gig of ram! I would be VERY interested to know how much of that ram is being used in DCS. Im on a quest to find out if 64gig is actually going to be a factor over 32gig?

For singleplayer it's fine but in large multiplayer missions I wouldn't want any less than 64GB. Especially if you're in the habit of having a browser with lots of tabs open in the background. I see ~45GB used by DCS on a regular basis when I am flying online, especially in scenarios like foothold where there's lots of units active at any time.

Im not familiar with your 5900X, but that just doesnt seem right to me? (pagefile issue?) I never go really near maxing out my 32 gig ram on this older build, and all I do is multiplayer. But anywho, Im wondering how the 9800X3D is doing in DCS for Ram for dugite57's new build

I saw a huge improvement in smothness, loading times and stability when I went to 64GB. Definitely worth it for me.
