Clark Posted July 18, 2023 Posted July 18, 2023 In my A10C at 20k at pre-contact point in formation with the tanker at 180kts, I send "Ready pre-contact". The tanker replies "cleared precontact" then immediately full throttle accelerates to 200kts leaving my A10 in the dust. Takes me another minute to catch back up and then try to connect. Why does the tanker accelerate away?

ASAP Posted July 18, 2023 Posted July 18, 2023 (edited) I also think there’s a tanker bug. There were plenty of clouds in my scenario and the tanker didn’t intentionally fly into any of them! Totally unrealistic. In seriousness though 180 is reeeeally slow for a big heavy airplane like that at 20K feet. I don’t know if they can actually do that which may be why the sim is wigging out. Have you tried doing it at something like 16K and 250 true air speed? Does it do the same acceleration then? I know real world at high altitudes like 20K feet the tankers will fly min speed in a slight dive which the A-10s would need to be able to keep up to the tanker. I don’t think you can simulate that in DCS though Edited July 18, 2023 by ASAP 1
Recoil16 Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 I agree with ASAP, you should probably try something lower. 15k/215 KIAS (+/-) is a quite comfortable place, which is in line with the NATO AAR planning docs. Everybody said: "That's impossible!" Then someone came along who didn't know that and just did it. jaylw314 Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 I just LMAO at the title of this thread IIRC, the speed I saw for the KC-135 refueling A-10's was 220 KIAS, I think I used 18,000' MSL and 290 knots groundspeed in the Mission Editor and it worked out about right
104th_Money Posted September 14, 2023 Posted September 14, 2023 When i put tankers in a mission, alt is usually 18,000-25,000' and if you put the speed of 430, at 25,000 thats about 290 during tanking. At 18,000 it pushes up a bit higher. If you are using an orbit, make sure that you set that speed the same as waypoints in the advance waypoints section. Nealius Posted September 16, 2023 Posted September 16, 2023 Can't remember where I picked it up but standard for A-10s should be low-ish, around FL180, and 220-230KCAS. That's about 288-300KTAS in the editor.
